does anybody know how i can get a dvd of the entire performance of this production and a video of the original 1966 production. is their an archive i can find it at
She was all set to play Grizabella in CATS but hurt herself and couldn't open in it. Andrew Lloyd Weber had Elaine Paige step in. Can't imagine Judi Dench singing "Memories". WOW!
someone mentions how ragged judi's voice is ,and someone else is arguing about liza having the best voice.sally is "working" in a desperately 3rd rate club in berlin.her voice would be rather beside the point.listen to WHAT she's singing.
Oh my fucking G-d this is wonderful....thank you for this video and audio orgasim. Love it! It's just too bad that during a period when some of our greatest performers and writers were working that technology wasn't as advanced as it is now. So glad I lived long enough to see this.on the internet. Thank you G-d!
One of the finest actress"s to grace the stage and theater and coninually gets standing ovation. She will never grow old and loves her fans, as much as they love her.
dear heavens, i really can't agree with whoever says liza minelli is a great singer, the accents at the end of Every line are just painful! i like this one a lot
I find it interesting how a lot of the famous stage versions seem to feature sub par singers who are very strong actors playing Sally Bowles (eg. the late Natasha Richardson, Judi Dench, etc.) yet Liza had the whole package in the film version - fabulous voice, fabulous dancing, and of course a great actress. Everyone says that the only reason they use bad singers is because it suited the role of Sally, but it's a bit of a contradiction when you listen to Liza sing - she really raised the bar.
Is it wrong for me to find her rather sexy in this?! Seriously, she looked great back then and looks good now for her age. I always liked her acting and voice, and those sexy eyes.
I agree with you and the lines are so long waiting to meet her now in London, and I think she is extremely sexy,When she talks to you it is if you are the only one in line. A beautiful woman no matter how old tops in my book.
The perfect look and voice. I loved her in this! Dench acted the hell out of the role in the London company. Her voice cracks on the cast recording too. Sadly, that CD is out of print now.
judi dench was known for her throaty voice her book is called With a Crack In Her voice that is how she was taught to sing early in her career. Most people like it. If you hear her send in the clowns it is the same. she is cute no matter what in my book
Yeah because Fosse's choreography for the film is so well known and loved (and is brilliant) poor Ron's original work is forgotten. The Telephone Dance in particular is BRILLIANT (some would argue too brilliant for a seedy cabaret)
I don't think she is BETTER than Jill Haworth (the original Sally Bowles) as someone said - I think Jill is the quintessential Sally, and prefer her to Judi Dench by far!
Amazing! I love Dame Judi Dench and have always wanted to see her doing something from Cabaret, thank you! Also, wasn't she beautiful! Mind you she still is.

Its not supposed to be pretty singing...she's deluded...its supposed to be bawdy and ugly...and she's clever enough to know that. Love it!

To sort of piggy-back on that, Sally is meant to be quite untalented. She isn't supposed to be a good singer.

Wow. Her voice is absolutely ragged from overuse, but the performance is terrific.

She still has the sex appeal and charisma that she had when she was young. There is just something about her hat makes you in awe of her.

I saw this production and Judi Dench has not been surpassed, in her stage performance of Sally Bowles.

I saw this show with my parents, mum left the tickets at home on top of the fridge and gee, dad was so cross- but,we got in and the show was so good.
I think it's not worth comparing this to the movie with Liza, they are two totally different shows- I think I prefer this one without the gloss
chequeryard 2 years ago
the character Sally diddnt get her job at the klub on the merits of her singing, it was because she was sleeping with the owner
so she is supposed to be a sub par singer

The sound drops are tragic, but thank you, thank you for posting this! An important historical record and Dame Judi is simply ...God, I love her.
RafaelPReyes 2 years ago 2
apparently people were so shocked by her voice they would come backstage and thank her for going on with such an awful cold
A guy who was in the company told me that
But Sally was supposed to be a second rate performer - that was the whole poignancy of the story
Judi Dench is so amazing

Brilliant, her portrayal was the best.

Well, I'm gonna stick up for Liza being the best Sally. Natasha Richardson a close second.

Liza's briliantin the role but the character is fairly different between film and stage

Never knew Dench played Sally Bowles, she looked like a knock out but in the singing department.... painful to watch!
dakki109 3 years ago
Well, Sally isn't SUPPOSED to be a good singer.
jv92 3 years ago 3
Well...there is a certain suspension of disbelief in the theatre.
encorebc 3 years ago
@jv92 no really, saLLy is suppose 2 be a passable/bad singer in reality, but in her mind she thinks she is g8 to be a supAstar!
i.e. that's why ms. bowles is working in a dumpsta joint called the kit-kat klub
maverickcate 1 year ago
@jv92 She's not? well, I admit, I know nothing about the source material. I just know the 1972 movie musical and I love it.
