As far as I know smoke alone won't make a sprinkler go off since they are purely mechanical and require heat to break the glass bulb or melt the solder links depending on what type of element is holding up the stopper. The only exception to this is if the room has a smoke detector that is hooked up to a deluge type sprinkler system, though those are pretty uncommon, with the exception of hollywood films of course!
ohhhh i see. thanks! i've been wondering about that. i know about the glass in the sprinkler. but i was unsure with just smoke. Now i can feel safe smoking by one haha. thanks a lot.
Where in the States can you purchase the recessed heads that pop out when activated? I live in the UK and our options here are not great and am thus looking into ordering from the US
Just so you know, the liquid is a dye/food coloring to indicate temperature rating and it is mixed with alcohol, glycol, etc. so it wont freeze. The air bubble inside the glass tube is what expands and breaks the glass. The bigger the air bubble the higher temp the head is. Good video, make sure you wear safety glasses when you do that. glass in the eye really sucks
It would have been more interesting if you had taken it outside and hooked it up to water and then set it off while connected. Oh well, at least now a few less people will have the dumb idea that sprinklers go off by smoke.
err well sprinklers CAN be tringered by smoke... they have to be connected to a deluge valve set off by electrical smoke detectors. That's a very common set up. On the other hand we often see guys seting off a sprinker system using a lighter under one single sprinkler head... THAT is not possible.
There's also different types of pre-action systems and alternative systems that can be filled with water in the summer and air in case winter gets cold. Alternative systems are getting rare because they're such a pain to maintain.
A dry system is full of air until an sprinkler head is activated, then the system will fill with water and only the heads that are activated by heat will spray water. Dry systems are used for any freezing conditions. A Deluge system usualy has to be activated by two different sources as in Heat and smoke, then the system will discharge all heads. Yes , this system is expensive and is usualy used in areas like expensive machines and computers.
You have a mix up. The dry system is just like the wet system exept it has air inside the tubes instead of water and ONLY the sprinkler head near the fire goes off. Not where in deluge all the heads have had their glass bulb or solder link removed.
hahaha u startd shaking like a motherfker when it went off

(Cont...)
Halon- lowers oxygen in room through halon gas, very dangrous and only used in server rooms (no water)
CO2/Argon- same as halon except uses CO2 or argon gas which is safe to breath.
High pressure systems- uses high pressure water, good for stores like home depot with tall ceilings.

the valve is triggered by the solenoid which is set off by the heat sensors. Thus you get water out of your open orifice head.

But most aren't.

Here are the systems:
Wet system- only water will come out of one head
Mist system (what I have)- also water but alot easier to clean up then a normal wet system.
Deluge- all sprinklers will go off in circuit, very expensive and only labs and industrial plants have them.
Dry system- same as deluge system, but constant air pressure is kept it pipes (very expensive and hard to maintain), only good for warehouse freezers.

Great comments guys ! Keep it up !

No, Dry system is not like a deluge system.
