Ok, if you are a samurai doing a running attack past you opponent.

But without swords, there is no running past you opponent.

You stand in front of him and deliver a set of combinations.

Do NOT try this technique if attacked on you way home from work...

I love how people keep making fun of the guy puting his hand out, the reality we all know will be no one is going to do that, but they will punch and one most people don't know how to fight or punch and you can do the same to a punch.

Yes not only angry people... If some1 stands near you and try to punch u can do the same.. i tried it u need just to block with your underarm or sth... (Look WIng Chun blocks) and then u can do this, very effective !

It would work at arm's length, too. Just from a right straight punch coming at you.

Of course the technique looks better when your opponent has been traveling a distance and gained some momentum to really swing him into a headlock with...

I practice Aikido and I have the say the principle of the technique works very well indeed. However, the Uke's approach is pretty poor and I'm assuming is purely to just demonstrate it. Frankly I would have rather he take a half hearted "proper swing" and then do the technique, it would have looked better. It is a pet peeve of mine though when the Uke televises so heavily what they will do, even if you know what kind of strike it will be, at least make it feel believable :S.

I trained aikido too.. For a while 'till the blue belt.. Then the club made some mistakes and me and 3 other guys stayed there..So, everything fell apart.. I want to ask u a question.. When someone attacks me from behind, and puts his arm around my neck.. How to break away? I think that the name is a naked back or something like that.. Not sure.. :D

I don't know what kind of people you fight, but I have never expirienced that, or even seen it in a real life situation...

If somebody came at me with a 'running punch' I'd let him hit me, I'd be too busy laughing to defend

Seriously though, I think this guy teaches Aikido to retired people in Florida. That's the only excuse I can see for this type of instruction.....Your thoughts?

Dont get me wrong I love Aikido but I can honestly say that this guy should stop making these videos. He does the art an injustice.

Ageed, the demos are basic forms, but they are represented as self defence techniques. All I see are non committed attacks by uke and an instructor with no grasp of basic concepts such as moving offline of an attack or effective balance taking.

In all seriousness, if this is what he teaches his sudents then there is no next level as you put it!

Any fighter can use this. Instead of assuming your opponent is approaching like that, imagine you're in a boxing stance and they strike with their back (power, as opposed to the front, or jab) hand. Step back, grab their (right, in my case, power hand in either case) wrist, and follow through with the rest of the technique.

Assuming you are a person of logic, you'd realize that the first step is getting out of the way, which is not unrealistic, boxers do it all the time in and out of the ring. Also, if I watched it right, I noticed the 2nd step of the move demonstrated shows you have to actually take advantage of your opponent's opposing struggle. So people, realize it's just a demonstration which starts by simulating a dodged strike.

This is unrealistic self defence assuming ur opponent is stupid enough to charge u with 1 hand out, then not fightback or recover thoughout the rest of the technique

Look, I respect Aikido highly. It's a beautiful philosophy and a graceful art. It promotes mental and physical balance. But many students believe they are learning a defense art. Why not train with more realistic attacks and with resistance, so that you can actually learn some self-defense?
