Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil created a sumptuous masterpiece of neo-postmodern, post-colonial theatre by symbiotically melding a multicultural hybrid of Eastern performance tradition within a Euro-Western performance space. Mnouchkine crafted a unique form of contemporary theater by interpreting the modern day catastrophes of mass inundations in China within the framework of the classical Japanese tradition of bunraku, or puppet theater. The effect was, by least measure, spectacular!!
During a 1.5 year-long sojourn studying "les arts de spectacle" in Paris, France (1999-2001), I was privileged enough to pay homage to Mnouchkine's corpus of genius theater works, as audience to one of the final live stage performances of "Tambours sur la Digue" (i.e., Drums on the Dike/Dam) at La Cartoucherie (Paris-Vincennes), prior to the company's overseas departure on tour. Truly, the performance was "un art de spectacle," in that it both captivated, mesmerized, and inspired me to tears.
