蛆沒有牙齒，所以只能吞食壞死組織的碎片，而不會損傷健康的組織­和肌肉。

蛆分泌的體液含有能殺死細菌的苯乙酸，和能分解細菌的蛋白酶，沒­被分泌液殺死的細菌，會被蛆吞食而後消化掉。

分泌液中還有表皮生長因子（Epidermal growth factor，EGF），和能刺激免疫發炎反應的Interle­ukin-6（IL-6），兩者皆能加快細胞組織的新生。

蛆還能促進纖維母細胞的生長，並藉由合成軟骨第二型膠原蛋白，而­幫助軟骨細胞生長。
