This man is a great guy and no matter what anyone says he one of the best people i know. He was one of the greatest pitchers of all time and i believe that no one will beat his record. he was great.
I remember the 68 season very well, being from Michigan. One thing I remember, and like about McLain, was on the same day he won his 31st,he gave Mantle one right down the middle, so he could be 3 rd on the all time home run list. (535). That was cool of him. The next batter up, Joe Pepitone wanted one grooved for him too, but McLain knocked him down.
I had the pleasure of meeting Denny several times as my business was Sports Memorabilia shows. He was a nice guy and no matter what you say about his personal life, the guy won 30 games! Beat that!
@Scoclamor Bouton was alying bullshitting faggot asshat who had nothing but xontempt for anythign rmeotley honest a joke and pig Hope he dies next....

Denny Dale McLain what a fucking scumbag. He was traded for 4 guys who are long since deceased..Aurilio Rodriguez,Ed Brinkman,Joe Coleman and Jim Hannah all died very young men.
I read "Strikeout" when it was first published. It was a good read. Plenty of highs and lows. I felt as if he was being honest about his lifestory. I've always wanted to meet him and just shoot the breeze. '67 Cy Young winner Jim Lonborg has a dental practice within walking distance from my home.
We'll never see another 30 game winner again. The game sure has changed though, I can't imagine a pitcher throwing over 200 pitches in a game like he did in '66!
Denny McLain was 31-6 in 1968. Absolutely a great regular season to get the Tigers to the World Series but Mickey Lolich won it for Detroit against the Cardinals going 3-0 in the 68 World Series. McLain pitched for the Washington Senators and Manager Ted Williams a few years later and they hated each other.
The Tiger's Skipper, Mayo Smith moving Mickey Stanley from Centerfield to Shortstop in the 1968 World Series was incredible and very effective.
I have mixed feelings on this interview. I agree with McLain about it being ridiculous the way starting pitchers hardly ever going past the 6th inning. But I disagree with him about Curt Flood. Flood was one of the individuals who ruined the game with free agency. Baseball needs a salary cap more than ever....unless you're a Yankee or Red Sox fan.
Curty Flood didn't ruin the game. Free agency and George Steinbrenner. Even, Gussie Busch said that if he had listen to Curt that his team would have saved a lot of money when free agency did come.
Thanks for the interview. I knew Denny for a time, and he was a very likable person, in person. He also had a gift of gab. His book is worth it, very interesting, lots of heartaches, buy his book!
Thanks for this interview. The spelling on this video should be "McLain". I enjoyed the book referred to in this interview "I told you I wasn't perfect". I remember Denny's dad, Tom McLain. I was the 3rd baseman on the American Legion team in the Markham (Illinois) Boys League in 1956. I was 11, Denny was 12. Tom was a wonderful manager, patiently working hard to make us a good team. Denny pitched us to the championship.

When Denny wears a baseball cap these days he looks like the identical twin of Michael Moore.

Amazing world series. Lolich wins game 7 on two days rest against Bob Gibson, who won 2 games in the series, striking out 17 in game 1.

Ridgerunner, Why can't a player move from team to team like you can move from job to job?
