@66pbass Ah, thank you. I saw them at first but I'm abit nab so i didnt understand it at first, was kindoff of hard for me to know that strings they were on but then i suddendly reaslied that thoose letters underneath represented the strings.... Thank you! :=)
Did you know on the original recording, he's actually only playing half of it and the back end is the tape being manually rewinded? Paul himself has admitted this.
THERE IS A GOOD REASON WHY THIS CAN'T BE ACCURATELY REPRODUCED. THE MINI SOLO'S ACSENDING LICK IS ACTUALLY THE DECSENDING LICK RECORDED BACKWARDS THEN SPLICED TOGETHER GIVING THE ILLUSION OF A COMPLETELY PLAYED LICK. THIS WAS FEATURED AND CONFIRMED IN A MID- NINETY'S BASS PLAYER MAG FEATURING BASSIST BAKITHI KUMOLO WHO PLAYED THE TRACK. LOOK IT UP BEFORE YOU NAY-SAYERS POST OTHERWISE TO THIS FACT! I STILL HAVE THIS MAG AND I CAN SCAN COPY AND SEND YOU NAY-SAYERS THE PROOF

If you listen closely to the song, it sounds like he plays the first part of the fill, and the second part is the first part played backwards (i.e not actually played, but like the record was spinning the wrong way).
My band does this song as well, and out of necessity (because I couldn't quite pick out the solo correctly) I just made up my own within the two bars of bass solo. If I had known it was this simple (as far as the notes and the position it's played in - the rhythms and tempo are the hard part) this is what I would've been trying to play all along. Thanks for the lesson!! :o)
damn man thats awsome..do you have a tab for this...i really want to learn this and it sounds awsome, damn good job, please send me a persanol message with this tab or e-mail me at gangstakid133 at yahoo thanks man
The solo is perfect, but I'd love to see how you'd do the rest of the parts. They're pretty tough to pick out of the recording and I haven't seen anyone else break down the rest of the song.
Sadowsky UV Jazz!!! The Best! I have one in aged Olympic white with a gorgeous brazilian rosewood fretboard and another on order with a maple fretboard that should be done in about 3 months. Roger Sadowsky builds the greatest basses on earth IMO!!! They play like a dream and they are gorgeous to look at. And ultralightweight too!!! They're a dream to play!
if i am not mistaken the first run was played straight on the studio version and then it was reversed for the second ,well that's what paul smon said anyway.still pretty cool
It's a great song! And as a barely-amateur musician, I am very impressed. Nice work. Great helpful video for those who are remotely able to do this (not me). :) I love finding virtuosic snippets in unexpected songs.
I think that's impossible. He did "play" the solo in the video! On page 29 of "Bass Player Magazine presents the Fretless Bass", Mr. Kumalo talks very specifically about recording the solo(on his birthday!). The engineer for the song, Roy Halee, also states in interview that Bakithi Kumalo performed the solo. Google search: "Classic Tracks: Paul Simon You Can Call Me Al"
This is amazing man. Did you know that the second half of the solo is just the first part in reverse? If you listen closely, you'll definitely hear it.
thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the reversing the tape trick was some studio brilliance! Check out the video I posted as a reply that has the actual solo slowed down. It helps make the reverse point more obvious.
Thank you for taking the time to do this - I worked through it, but cant play it at full speed yet. good work & looks like you got a visit from the man himself!
I thought the second half was just the first half played backwards? It certainly sounds like that on the recording, with that 'reverse reverb' feel. Nice bass btw - NYC or Metro?
You're right, they reverse the tape around beat 2 of the second bar on the original recording. My band plays it live, so I had to learn how to interpret the whole thing "forward".
Bass is a NYC ultra vintage with Sadowsky single coils.
I've uploaded a response video with the ORIGINAL solo, slowed way down.
Amazing, thanks!

The bass solo on the Paul Simon track is actually a recording played backwards.

It's a "dead" note. In this case, it's a "slap" with the left hand muting the strings, instead of fretting a note.

In the studio version when the bass goes back up (in pitch), its the same as it going down (in pitch) but just played in reverse, literally.

Yup, Paul Simon explains that in "Classic Albums" or whatever that tv series is called. You can kinda hear that it's in reverse once you know that.
