  • Amazing, thanks!

  • That's... Wouaow ! O_O

    What a sound !

  • Hey mate, do you mind posting or sending me all of the tabs to this song if you have them? :)

  • mind making a video to explain how you do all that amazing stuff?...really want to learn that to

  • Play this backawards over a period of half an hour and it's me learning it

  • Hello mate that is insane slapping, do you know where i can find the tabs for this or if you could send them? would be greatly appreciated!

  • @TheAffroManiac Thank you! I put the fingering in the comments, hopefully that's helpful.

  • @66pbass Ah, thank you. I saw them at first but I'm abit nab so i didnt understand it at first, was kindoff of hard for me to know that strings they were on but then i suddendly reaslied that thoose letters underneath represented the strings.... Thank you! :=)

  • Did you know on the original recording, he's actually only playing half of it and the back end is the tape being manually rewinded? Paul himself has admitted this.

  • great disclipine ! gz

  • Challenge Accepted :D

  • Poppin' Fresh homie!

  • Superb... You are a genius and a good soul... Thanx

  • I've never heard a Sadouwski bass sound bad. I might have to check into those, one day.

  • OHHH SHIIITTT, THATS SICK MAN

  • Oh yeah,It´s much harder to play it slow-:)))Very,very nice....great sound.

  • I think I read this somewhere and it sure sounds like it if you listen to it.

The bass solo on the Paul Simon track is actually a recording played backwards.

  • THIS IS BAD A%%!!!!

  • Great video... always liked this solo... thanks for teaching me man..

  • Kudos, dude. Spent years trying to figure this until I found out it's half backmasked, how naive I was. This is fantastic, thank you!

  • Super-tasty and tone for days. Nice job - love the Sadowsky!

  • its great!!!

and it helps so much more than the others!!!

    best bass lesson of youtube!!!

  • Great way to learn.

  • Nice going on the backwards part

  • fuck me!

  • That was really great...Very innovative as well.

  • god that was mighty

  • Great vid thanks

  • awesome playing dude, sounds nice - no scratching etc! thumbs up!

  • If you listen closely to the song, it sounds like he plays the first part of the fill, and the second part is the first part played backwards (i.e not actually played, but like the record was spinning the wrong way).

  • @RedBarchetta47 That's what it actually is.

  • Superb man... That was fantastic....

  • My band does this song as well, and out of necessity (because I couldn't quite pick out the solo correctly) I just made up my own within the two bars of bass solo. If I had known it was this simple (as far as the notes and the position it's played in - the rhythms and tempo are the hard part) this is what I would've been trying to play all along. Thanks for the lesson!! :o)

  • WOW! Fantastic fingering! Thanks a bunch!

  • YouTube should pay you a bonus - this is the kind of response vid that makes YouTube such a great site.

  • bravo

    !!!

  • what do you mean by the "x" in the tabs?

    please help

  • damn man thats awsome..do you have a tab for this...i really want to learn this and it sounds awsome, damn good job, please send me a persanol message with this tab or e-mail me at gangstakid133 at yahoo thanks man

  • asi es que se enseña muy bien...

  • The solo is perfect, but I'd love to see how you'd do the rest of the parts. They're pretty tough to pick out of the recording and I haven't seen anyone else break down the rest of the song.

  • the tab is what exactly what u play??

  • do you have the notes for this?

  • Sadowsky UV Jazz!!! The Best! I have one in aged Olympic white with a gorgeous brazilian rosewood fretboard and another on order with a maple fretboard that should be done in about 3 months. Roger Sadowsky builds the greatest basses on earth IMO!!! They play like a dream and they are gorgeous to look at. And ultralightweight too!!! They're a dream to play!

  • @chrisbmets

I totally agree with you,go & check my '99 swamp ash/maple standard JB,just to be even more excited while waiting to get yours ;)

  • if i am not mistaken the first run was played straight on the studio version and then it was reversed for the second ,well that's what paul smon said anyway.still pretty cool

  • Nice bass! Do you have any other videos of the bass or a review?

Is this a Metro or US Sadowsky?

  • Sorry, no other vids yet. Hopefully more coming soon.

    It's a NYC Sadowsky ultravintage.

  • My best shot at tabs is in with the comments. Hope it helps.

  • It's a "dead" note. In this case, it's a "slap" with the left hand muting the strings, instead of fretting a note.

  • Superb, tell me, is this bass ash or alder & are the pickups single coils or hummers...Nice one

  • Thanks! It's a Sadowsky ultra-vintage w/ ash body, and Sadowsky single coils.

  • omg not easy..:(

  • dang!

  • maaan... good video

  • awesome job and, damnit, I need a Sadowsky

  • Do u pluck with both index & middle or just 1?

  • Just the index.

  • do you use pull offs or hammer ones on this bass solo?

  • hammer going down, pull off going up.

  • nice work. I am thinking of ordering a sadowsy bass. would you recommend the maple or rosewood neck

  • I have to pick!?! They're both going to be great, but I find the maple neck more versatile for me.

  • It's a great song! And as a barely-amateur musician, I am very impressed. Nice work. Great helpful video for those who are remotely able to do this (not me). :) I love finding virtuosic snippets in unexpected songs.

  • Thank you, thank you. I will put it to good use.

  • brilliant video - much thanks

  • love that full throated sound ...

  • ive been waiting for someone to do this for a long time. Thanks!

  • great job..if you can't do it SLOW, you can't do it FAST ....simple.

  • the funny thing is that actual solo on studio recording was played by mr. paul simon himself. the rest of bassline is kumalo magic, of course ;)

  • I think that's impossible. He did "play" the solo in the video! On page 29 of "Bass Player Magazine presents the Fretless Bass", Mr. Kumalo talks very specifically about recording the solo(on his birthday!). The engineer for the song, Roy Halee, also states in interview that Bakithi Kumalo performed the solo. Google search: "Classic Tracks: Paul Simon You Can Call Me Al"

  • WOW

  • For the orginal seed whats the tempo

  • thats really good man, thanks

  • Awesome and very helpful.

  • super clean...A+++

  • In the studio version when the bass goes back up (in pitch), its the same as it going down (in pitch) but just played in reverse, literally.

  • Yup, Paul Simon explains that in "Classic Albums" or whatever that tv series is called. You can kinda hear that it's in reverse once you know that.

  • Awesome sound, clean and tight playing. Thanks for the video dude!

  • ok that not how it gose i know he's ,MY DAD

  • Great - thanks... of course the studio version of this is somewhat hard to re-generate live... :-)

  • vintage tone control?Sadowsky rules

  • Very cool!

  • Lol, even when you slowed down the first time, this was way too fast for me, the last ones were perfect to follow though

Excellent sound and thnaks for sharing, bro!

  • Not bad, but like Bakithi Kumalo, the man who created that famous bass lick, pointed out: it's not quite it...

  • This is amazing man. Did you know that the second half of the solo is just the first part in reverse? If you listen closely, you'll definitely hear it.

    But again, amazing cover.

  • thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the reversing the tape trick was some studio brilliance! Check out the video I posted as a reply that has the actual solo slowed down. It helps make the reverse point more obvious.

  • EXTREMELY helpful. You should get a gold medal for this video.

  • thank you so much. the tabs in the info REALLY helped

  • Thank you :) nice

  • I'll put my best shot at tabs in the description.

  • you just saved me a few hours trying to work it out....cheers dude !!

Kumalo sent you saw it too ....got to be happy with that !

    nice bass too dude,thanks again

  • hey can u post the exact tabs for this solo.

    thanks man

  • Thank you for taking the time to do this - I worked through it, but cant play it at full speed yet. good work & looks like you got a visit from the man himself!

  • That's pretty close, but not quite...thanks man!

  • It's a huge honor that I could play you my best attempt at your amazing work!! Thank you for listening, and for your innovating and inspiring music!

  • Awesome

  • @Kumalobass

    its perfect

  • Way to go!! excellent demo! I'm gonna learn it finally! thanks!

  • thanks man, i've been trying to learn to play this for months. this'll really help me out.

  • gracias

  • Awesome

  • That was sick! 2 big thumbs up

  • I thought the second half was just the first half played backwards? It certainly sounds like that on the recording, with that 'reverse reverb' feel. Nice bass btw - NYC or Metro?

  • You're right, they reverse the tape around beat 2 of the second bar on the original recording. My band plays it live, so I had to learn how to interpret the whole thing "forward".

Bass is a NYC ultra vintage with Sadowsky single coils.

I've uploaded a response video with the ORIGINAL solo, slowed way down.

  • Priceless! Thanks a million, dude, and yeah your tone and chops are sweet.

I feel like I owe you at least a beer.

  • man u are a really gr8 bassist

  • thanks a mil i got that thing dialed now. youve got slick tone by the way

  • Could you please make a tutorial?

  • wooh thats great :-)

  • wow, thanks alot for posting this! I've just spent the last hour trying to copy you at the slowest speed :-)

  • I want to see how fast you can play it! Nice man.

  • Um...can you slow it down a little more? heh
