An old review which was posted when the game first came out. It has now been two years since the release and the game is improving like a fine wine. I personally enjoy this game after coming back to it when it went Free to Play (I cannot afford too many MMO's sadly). Therefore Gamespot, please review the game again as a sort of then and now comparing how it was and how it is.
Be nice if they actually did a re-review after F2P launch, since much of the stuff he mentions here has changed. "The Foundry" (player mission creator) is one of the big newer features, and is awesome. So you don't like the basic missions?Fine, make your own and publish them into the world for play! The klingon side is much more robust now, though admittedly still a WiP. Ground missions totally revamped."Featured episodes" are awesome, and include far more cinematics and immersing storylines.
Slim and simple is actually perfect for me as far as MMORPGs go I always found them very uninviting. I love the space combat, it's like a funner, faster paced Starfleet Command. I'll agree with the review that the ground combat is absolutely awful.
THIS GUYE IS A IDIOT :. this game is simple and studid ? look deep in my eyes, get naked and jump in you Town like a rapit. your gaga kikirie kie man.
I purchased this game last week as I was extremely bored with everything else and am genuinely surprised. I've watched the reviews, read alot of bad stuff, but so far I've really enjoyed it.
Sure, there are still many things to improve, but since reaching Commander and now Captain, the combat just keeps getting more and more fun. I'd definately recommend this game to anyone, especially if you're a fan of Star Trek.
I believe the Free to Play system coming this year will be a huge success.
Bad thing about this game is: You always play as captain. They should make the first levels in the Federation Academy in San Francisco, learning the basics in simulators, and then you graduate and can be Science, Medicine, Captain, etc...
Or maybe start as a klingon warrior, and advance by battling against all enemies and etc... This is how I would make ST:O
@1Arky1 To play the game you purchase the actual digital or retail copy of the game and then pay monthly, 3 monthly, 6 monthly, or Lifetime. Google "can you run it" and find STO. It'll scan your PC and tell you if you can play it.
@Partyffs Technically you CAN play Star Trek Online entirely solo... just don't team up or join any groups. That also of course means you don't play in any of the "raids" (Special Task Force), or "fleet action" events.
This review fails to realize that Star Trek Online is an MMO. MMO's have a tendency to start low and grow huge. They do not point out the possibilities of what STO might become. These days there are so many more parts of the game including Diplomacy and some reasonable Klingon content. This review also doesn't even show level progression passed the second rank. I believe this review needs to be updated and done properly.
I don't know why you guys are whining. Just get AdBlocker if you're using FireFox, or something similar for the other browsers. I haven't seen commercials at all since I got it.
I love Star Trek and thinking of suscribing. But i'm from Ukraine and when i played Champions Online, i'd never find anyone of russian or ukrainian speaking players. Is there any in Star Trek Online?
The Collector's Edition of STO is available on Amazon for only $8.29. I bought it and have been playing it non-stop since Christmas. It really is a fun game with great visuals and a good community. And, I only spent $8.29. The Collector's Edition comes with some nice stuff.
@jim121able No. You have to get your Federation character to a certain level (I can't remember the exact level, but it's less than 10. I think it's level 6) before the ability to create a Klingon unlocks.
the game is new.. BUT its not true that everything is that shalow..
the quests have some puzles.. game seems tobe developing..
i think it just they were pressed for deadline.. so the game will probably evolve.. otherwise what is the point of investing the money in this project plus there are over 10k fanbase that will play it.
the game just needs tobe developped some more.. modified.
Pretty much all of the complaints in this review have been addressed by the STO dev team and have been fixed. This game should be re-examined. While this review is not too harsh considering where the game was at launch, it is now inaccuate.

I got 14 dollars on a Best Buy gift card burning a hole in wallet and not much else to choose from. To those who played it, is this worth the 10 price.
The game has improved. I personally love the game...not even really into Star Trek that much, but it's unlike a lot of other mmo's out there. It's a lot of fun.
@diceCasden yep... that's the problem with reviewing mmos like this. mmos evolve over time, this game has been steadily adding stuff for nearly a year since this review so it's not reflective of the game as it stands now at all.

MultiAwesome is right. If you are even thinking about trying this game, now is the time to do it. The game has changed so much since the time of this review, its not even funny.
@MultiAwesome123 I played it once and if they didnt change the ground combat and mission designs then there is no reason to try it. Only space combat was fun but without any real purpose.
@ReviewGameX That's the thing. Ground combat is getting a complete rework by the end of July. Now is a great time to get back into the game. It's a lot better than it was now.
@FourKelvin In the state it's in now, yes. It's a lot more fun now, ground combat is basiclly another game and space combat is still fun, and now that the foundry is out, players are making their own missions. And soon cryptic is gonna be doing more featured episodes (the good ones) so things are looking good for STO. I just got my 500 day vet rewards so I know what the game was like at start and what it's like now and it's a big improvement. But the starting missions might be a bit boring.
@MultiAwesome123 When it was first released it was a buggy piece of crap, I haven't play for a while but I am going to try quite soon and I hope I'm right it's gonna better. Because I enjoyed it then the bugs settled in.
I was an eve player for 3 years straight, I was very good then I got to capital ships, then the game became too complex, if you want a nice simple, fairly epic mmo with solid pvp and a non punishing game I highly recommend star trek online, eve... It just laughs at you and throws all your nice toys into space dirt lol
simple, easy and throw-away entertainment is exactly what i expect from mmo's in general, hence i never get disapointed, yeah sure wow is by far better, but no mmo (no matter how good) can compete with a singleplayer RPG and a story tailored to it ... its just so much easier to make a world believable and changing to/by your actions in SP than in MP :-(
Ah some people are saying they have fixed alot of that stuff but seriously, cryptic were never great MMO makers such as Blizzard with World of warcraft or Arenanet (i think) with guild wars.
The game has since improved.. it still has a long way to go but Cryptic is working hard on it and doing well IMHO... to me this is a good way to get away from the WoW monster
well i play it and i say enough with me searching for crap on the surface and blowing up ships....i want more diplomacy missions. the ones where you need to solve an issue between 2 partys in words (less button mashing more puzzle)...
"Ships you get to pilot..." That pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with Star Trek games like this. You don't PILOT a starship! You captain it, you crew it, you operate it. Orders are given and orders are followed. That's how a starship is run.
A *good* Star Trek MMOG would assign players to crews where each player would have a role to play in concert with other players. Sort of like a Bridge Commander on crack.
This review is dead on right. And the game has not improved since launch. Too bad really. A good Star Trek MMO would be great. STO is every bit as bad as you've heard.
@rune10164 it came out several months ago. they had plenty of time to fix it, but i've been playing for more than a month and none of the bugs i observed from day 1 have been fixed.
they should not have released an unfinished game. as it is now it gets boring really fast. this review is imo very truthfull as it reflects how i and other players feel about this game.
There is a game in which you can plot your course: Starfleet Academy. What I don't like is paying a monthly fee for a game. Also (but im not sure, I've only played the demo) I don't get a sense of an "evolving universe". If you do something, there has to be a consecuence.
i dont think they even made it to level 20, it starts out easy, but this game gets challenging later on, and missions get better as well and more and more stuff to do. saying this game is very simple and easy is just stupid.
Come on now, you've gotta be fair here. MMO's aren't supposed to instantly be perfect when they're launched. Besides, Cryptic is working extremely hard to patch bugs and churn out new content to keep the players entertained. THEY KNOW they released too early. They're trying to fix that. Give STO a break.
Simple is exactly what you want in a MMO. Games like EVE take forever to actually understand the game play, as well as the controlles. EVE has a tutorial yes, which takes an hour to read. STO is simple and not got alot of controls to know
1) Ground combat need's more flexibility with the characters and better gun's.
2) Agreed, the bug's really piss me off.
3) Space Combat can get dull but it's very rare that it does!..Simplicity can be the most effective. As for the respawn, nothing wrong with that! Challenge yourself not to die!
4) As far as the story is going (I'm still in season 1)..it's fantastic and well worth continuing playing for.
5) Superb graphic's. For trekkie's like myself, this game is recommended!
@HashishinIrani Well what about the gamers like me who are considering it (at least partly) for a... star trek on deck simulation. I want to be able to be on the bridge of a ship and plot a course on the control panel to warp to another sector of space. I want to be able to actually ''pilot'' the ship.
@jofus2019 Unfortunately it doesn't let you do that =/ all you can do is walk around on the bridge! Hardly very exciting! They should patch that in though..being able to plot a course on the bridge would be great!
whats sad is i bought champions online and paid for the 6 months sub to get the guar beta, when I played it, the game was just terrible. WOW even though years old and outdated still smacks this game down so hard! I think when blizzard announces its new MMO based in space this fall at blizzcon, I think I will be hyped. Im hoping for World of Starcraft! I love startrek but cancelled as soon as I played the beta.
Review is on target. STO is a disappointment, starting with server rates to pay.
There's enough things in the game to purchase for you're character & ship. It's like picking ones pockets more than gas prices. It's like the creators threw the game out there before completion, as it seem to be riddled with problems and alot of complaints. They should of completed 5 episodes before unleashing it.
The graphics are like looking at Star Trek paperback novels. Lacking various factions.
this is mostly true but this game is expanding very quickly and is growing into a very fun game yes it is taking time but it is getting really good and this new update made a huge difference
Atari pressured cryptic to release this game asap so cryptic released an unfinished game essentially. Just give it a while it may take time but this game will be great. I hope.
@CMEMillennium My guess is by the end of this year it should be a very complete game and have a lot to offer. They just came out with season 2.0 and that added quite a bit from what I hear.
what did you expect at launch with all the issues sto have had until it finally reached a release?
they have done alot during the 6 months, sure it got a long way to go, but people should stop complaining and comapare where it is now and where it was when it launched.
Legacy was ok, if they'd made legacy 2, with bug fixes from the first game, allowed true 360 degree movement, more ships, maps, fix glitches, I'd buy it. I'm surprised they haven't. I'm sure Legacy sold over a million copies.
@NIN1024 I'm a trekkie and was truly disappointed by this game. Cryptic needs to stop pushing out its imaginary MMO quota and actually take the time to create, develop, nurture, and grow a true MMO. I don't think patches will be able to save this game- this game need a whole overhaul of every aspect. This game is nothing but an online Star Fleet academy, and a free flash player game for the ground combat. Let Bioware show Cryptic how its done w/ Knights of the Old Republic.... Sorry STO. RIP
there's alot of content coming out now...problem is I think alot of what is coming out sould have been out at launch. They're going to add diplomacy which sounds interesting explorable ships and it does seem they're trying to slowly lower the amount of instanced content and they plan to have mission on more well know planets such as vulcan, but the question is is it too little too late...
But you can't really review an online game, they change all the time so when people come back to see this review in like 1 year they might think that that's how the game is now
@Prohunter93 they do change all the time yes but there still has to be a solid foundation to build on in the first place, which this game just doesnt have, everything from star ship combat mechanics to the lack of exploration due to the instance gameplay all of it means this game has little to build on
I mean look at world of warcraft, its changed so much but the core gameplay foundations that made it great is still intact so STO is doomed
Just bought the game and saw this review while waiting for the 3 Gb patch to finish downloading.. Sure made me feel like i wasted my money, but maybe it will be revamped with updates and it'll be more fun later on.. Can always cancel my subscription and activate it later on!
The review is right on. STO sucks. I am a ST fan and I was looking forward to this game and it's complete shit. Nobody will even create an ST game. Thanks Cryptic for killing off the geanre. Oh yeah, I forgot that Crypric is releasing patches. So I better play it even though it's complete shit, hoping that it will become better. Comon people you sound pathetic.
eh just go and play Star trek Bridge commander the storyline is good combat is great and you feel like your actualy on your ships bridge. If you havnt seen or heard of this game go and watch some videos for it, and if you dont like the damage models or graphics go and easily install some mods..
I give star trek online a 6.5 outa 10 and star trek bridge commander a 9.5/10
Review it again in a year. I've never played an MMO that was actually GOOD at launch. STO has the most rapid campaign of content release and game expansion that I've EVER seen in an MMO.
@wun1gee I agree with you. This game does have a lot of potential, and I do hope they will review it again later after a few more improvements to the game. =)
@QlinerX154 Yeah you can really tell Cryptic are focusing on developing the important parts of the game, what with 70% of the update being microtransaction fluff for the C-Store.
hey everyone, you can't judje a MMO by the first look, like other games star trek online has updates that make it better and they just made their first major one "season 1 common ground" and right now one of the things they are working on is a death penalty, what these guys said they didnt have. You cant judje a game by first look, you need to give it time to change and for the dynamics to evolve with updates

0:49 The wonderful human drama that makes Star Trek what it is.
The wonderful human drama is also known as the Gene Roddenberry's Utopia or the libertarian socialist utopia.
It was last present in Star Trek 8, First Contact, and on the series side, not even DS9 in 1990 fulfilled that legacy.

@MultiAwesome123 so if i'd ask you if i should buy this game, would you say yes?
well...
Should i still buy this game?
FourKelvin 6 months ago
@FourKelvin In the state it's in now, yes. It's a lot more fun now, ground combat is basiclly another game and space combat is still fun, and now that the foundry is out, players are making their own missions. And soon cryptic is gonna be doing more featured episodes (the good ones) so things are looking good for STO. I just got my 500 day vet rewards so I know what the game was like at start and what it's like now and it's a big improvement. But the starting missions might be a bit boring.

Thanks for the quick reply

@MultiAwesome123 When it was first released it was a buggy piece of crap, I haven't play for a while but I am going to try quite soon and I hope I'm right it's gonna better. Because I enjoyed it then the bugs settled in.
muddertate 6 months ago
@muddertate It has. Don't worry, the game is a lot more fun.

DakRattler 1 year ago
The good thing about this game is that it gets updated FAST.
Kulzar 1 year ago
i agree with him about the away/ground missions but, the space adventure is epic!!!!!
woodythegreat87 1 year ago
simple, easy and throw-away entertainment is exactly what i expect from mmo's in general, hence i never get disapointed, yeah sure wow is by far better, but no mmo (no matter how good) can compete with a singleplayer RPG and a story tailored to it ... its just so much easier to make a world believable and changing to/by your actions in SP than in MP :-(

XJadynX 1 year ago
well i play it and i say enough with me searching for crap on the surface and blowing up ships....i want more diplomacy missions. the ones where you need to solve an issue between 2 partys in words (less button mashing more puzzle)...
oh and more to do on the ship

cod4hero55 1 year ago
"Ships you get to pilot..." That pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with Star Trek games like this. You don't PILOT a starship! You captain it, you crew it, you operate it. Orders are given and orders are followed. That's how a starship is run.
A *good* Star Trek MMOG would assign players to crews where each player would have a role to play in concert with other players. Sort of like a Bridge Commander on crack.
Try again, Atari.

@dapenguin2 QFT! They should speak more about the nonexistent endgame content.

This review is dead on right. And the game has not improved since launch. Too bad really. A good Star Trek MMO would be great. STO is every bit as bad as you've heard.

Yes but look at the detail put into the game like the space battles and away missions clearly a lot of effort went into this game

Yup- that's the game in a nutshell, and Season 2 really didn't offer all that much more.

:( WHY MUST YOU MOCK THE GAME D: THEY JUST TRYING TO MAKE FUN GAMES GEZZE IT JUST CAME OUT THEY WILL MAKE IT BETTER O:
rune10164 1 year ago
@rune10164 it came out several months ago. they had plenty of time to fix it, but i've been playing for more than a month and none of the bugs i observed from day 1 have been fixed.
they should not have released an unfinished game. as it is now it gets boring really fast. this review is imo very truthfull as it reflects how i and other players feel about this game.
Verliebt 1 year ago
There is a game in which you can plot your course: Starfleet Academy. What I don't like is paying a monthly fee for a game. Also (but im not sure, I've only played the demo) I don't get a sense of an "evolving universe". If you do something, there has to be a consecuence.
Issus38 1 year ago
i dont think they even made it to level 20, it starts out easy, but this game gets challenging later on, and missions get better as well and more and more stuff to do. saying this game is very simple and easy is just stupid.
ashesnmisery 1 year ago
Come on now, you've gotta be fair here. MMO's aren't supposed to instantly be perfect when they're launched. Besides, Cryptic is working extremely hard to patch bugs and churn out new content to keep the players entertained. THEY KNOW they released too early. They're trying to fix that. Give STO a break.
Roland9x 1 year ago
Simple is exactly what you want in a MMO. Games like EVE take forever to actually understand the game play, as well as the controlles. EVE has a tutorial yes, which takes an hour to read. STO is simple and not got alot of controls to know
cart505 1 year ago
Its just easy witch isnt what you want in an MMO(switches to an awesome gameplay screen)

Bad review imho.
HashishinIrani 1 year ago
@HashishinIrani Well what about the gamers like me who are considering it (at least partly) for a... star trek on deck simulation. I want to be able to be on the bridge of a ship and plot a course on the control panel to warp to another sector of space. I want to be able to actually ''pilot'' the ship.
jofus2019 1 year ago
@jofus2019 Unfortunately it doesn't let you do that =/ all you can do is walk around on the bridge! Hardly very exciting! They should patch that in though..being able to plot a course on the bridge would be great!
HashishinIrani 1 year ago
whats sad is i bought champions online and paid for the 6 months sub to get the guar beta, when I played it, the game was just terrible. WOW even though years old and outdated still smacks this game down so hard! I think when blizzard announces its new MMO based in space this fall at blizzcon, I think I will be hyped. Im hoping for World of Starcraft! I love startrek but cancelled as soon as I played the beta.
Niche79 1 year ago

I hope.
goodatlinerider 1 year ago
@goodatlinerider but how long will we have to wait till a more fleshed out STO comes online? 3 years?
CMEMillennium 1 year ago
@CMEMillennium My guess is by the end of this year it should be a very complete game and have a lot to offer. They just came out with season 2.0 and that added quite a bit from what I hear.
goodatlinerider 1 year ago
what did you expect at launch with all the issues sto have had until it finally reached a release?
they have done alot during the 6 months, sure it got a long way to go, but people should stop complaining and comapare where it is now and where it was when it launched.
tcabove 1 year ago
Legacy was ok, if they'd made legacy 2, with bug fixes from the first game, allowed true 360 degree movement, more ships, maps, fix glitches, I'd buy it. I'm surprised they haven't. I'm sure Legacy sold over a million copies.
Tommytuffnuttz 1 year ago
What a piece of crap, and you have to pay 60 for the game and then 300.00 to play it online... What a joke!!!
I'm not sure I'd even buy it if it were just 60. Lots of suckers out there, just bend over, that's it, now brace yourself.

I think this is a great game. I am a trekkie, but seriously, WoW wasn't that great at first either, its nothing patching can't fix.
NIN1024 1 year ago

Trying the trial, this will be interesting :P
But you can't really review an online game, they change all the time so when people come back to see this review in like 1 year they might think that that's how the game is now
Prohunter93 1 year ago
@Prohunter93 they do change all the time yes but there still has to be a solid foundation to build on in the first place, which this game just doesnt have, everything from star ship combat mechanics to the lack of exploration due to the instance gameplay all of it means this game has little to build on
I mean look at world of warcraft, its changed so much but the core gameplay foundations that made it great is still intact so STO is doomed

This is a very, very shitty game.
I dont think i have ever played this kind of weird shit, and i have been playing since the 80's.
Is it even a game, let alone a MMO? feels like a shitty chatroom tbh, and even then it is severely lacking.
The way i see it, this game is designed for 6 year old kids with Xbox controllers.
A true, epic failure.

@Madzombie51 So true , it was an utter disappointment, it's not Star Trek.

QlinerX154 1 year ago
@QlinerX154 Yeah you can really tell Cryptic are focusing on developing the important parts of the game, what with 70% of the update being microtransaction fluff for the C-Store.
Spiderpope 1 year ago
hey everyone, you can't judje a MMO by the first look, like other games star trek online has updates that make it better and they just made their first major one "season 1 common ground" and right now one of the things they are working on is a death penalty, what these guys said they didnt have. You cant judje a game by first look, you need to give it time to change and for the dynamics to evolve with updates
