Multitasking is only available for iPhone 3GS and iphone4(which I own)...and apps do not run in the background unless they are compatible with ios4, therefore battery life or ram are not affected

Do not update if you have an iPod touch. The only difference is the calculator icon, and an airplane mode. Nothing else like multitasking or home wallpaper works.

I just updated to ios 4 today and it didn't have that wall paper and when I double tap the home button it brings up my music. I went to the settings to change what double tapping the home button does and I can only chose for it to open my music, go to the home page or open up search :(

as for the app, just back up your apps with itunes and you should be fine. i had to restore my ipod a couple times in the past and when i restored, i just clicked that it was a backup from my ipod and everything was there.

as for downgrading, as far as i know, it's possible, but i'm not sure how...

Disappointed that Pandora, etc., don't keep playing when you flip to another app. That is the only reason I updated to 4.0 -- maybe they'll add it in the next iteration.

Was also hoping for connectivity between calendar events and contact records. This way if I went to a contact and created a calendar event, it would be linked back to the contact for phone and address info. How many times do you need to call someone if you're running late, or get directions?

Hey when you have the multitasking panel open you can drag it the other direction and you have music controls and most importantly A PORTRAIT ORIENTATION LOCK!! So finally you can lay in bed with your iPod without it constantly changing to landscape mode!!! That's like the most amazing part of the update and he didn't even notice it!!

Apple couldn't handle backgrounds so they removed them from the update, me and my friend have the same iPod but she updated before and got the backgrounds but I'm guessing that in between the time me and her updated they removed the backgrounds and multi-tasking?
