  • Sie waren und sind einfach die Besten!!!

  • Shame they couldn't get the words right!

  • Having grown up with both Fairport Convetion and Steeleye Span, I couldn't ever choose which I preferred. I'm just glad that I can listen to this when the mainstream bubble-gum pop starts to irritate me. It's so beautiful. Maddy Prior's voice is just amazing.

Believe me, if someone said i could sing like her, I would be so happy. On the other hand, if someone said I could sing like Simon Nichol I'd be quite confused as to why I sounded like a man.

  • Both superb bands, and thankfully there's no need to choose between them. They were both tilling the same soil but grew wonderfully different crops in it.

  • Wonderful I have just bought two box sets

  • I'm a massive Fairport fan, but I love Span too

  • Thank goodness we can enjoy Steeleye Span AND Fairport Convention - it would be miserable having to choose only one

  • Thank goodnees we can enjoy Steeleye Span AND Fairport Convention - it would be miserable having to choose only one

  • Love Maddy Prior. Met her in Toowoomba, Qld, about 5 years ago after her "KIng Arthur" concert. She was as amazing then as she always has been.

  • Hells teeth' this is so far under my skin, the harmonies make me feel helpless, but it includes me later. Press your Buzzer if it get you too

  • Steeleye Span are a folk band that use rock instruments and arrangements. Fairport are a rock band that , from Liege and Lief onwards started playing some traditional folk music in a rock idiom. Simon Nicol recently commented that their brand of folk is "second generation folk " rather than the trad. material mainly used by Steeleye. Personally I prefer Steeleye Span, but they are both excellent and very talented bands.

  • Brilliant. Always liked Steel Eye Span and the fantastic Maddy Prior.

    Thanks for the upload.

  • I love both bands and it's great that 40-odd years on they're still recording and touring.

  • In answer to your question , Nigihayahi , Fairport made three great albums especially Liege & Lief + Sandy and Richard were the cream of the revival period. But the later Fairports were pretty dreadful. Steeleye were always a far more exciting stage show than FC + they made up to ten really great albums and never had a dud line up. I'd give it to Steeleye , on balance. But I'd also have Pentangle in the mix. And Trees from a little bit later. Thanks for this brilliant clip.

  • This is one of the best English folk songs ever, and Steeleye Span does such a joy-filled, happy version of it! They really convey the happiness and fun of this song in this performance. Makes you want to strap bells on your legs, and follow the 'obby 'oss right down the street....

  • Wonderful, wonderful Maddie P, last saw her live with Quo in Brighton, twirling her coat tails like a dervish!! her voice evokes all that's best in folk music, & this reminds me of May days in Padstow...............obby oss and all!!

  • Great singer is Maddie

  • Whatever happened to the finger-in-one-ear look?

  • This is one of the best Song fr Maddy/Steeleye Span!

  • I love it

  • Such a great song!

  • we should not comment on others life that does not affect us

  • we should not comment on others life that does not affect us

  • maddy for prime minister of folk

anyone have hard times of old england live ?

  • maddy for prime minister of folk

  • I love both Steeleye & Fairport equally..

  • Steeleye Span,Fairport Convention,Ashley Hutchings and all the Albion Band.....they are the base and the creators in England of the "Folk-rock".Ashley was in all the bands,a genious.Of course,I like, and I have see the three......

  • Don't want to split hairs .. these are two fantastic outfits .. SS & FC .. I'll take em both, thanks very much, sport ... now, back to some dancing ...

  • Maddy Prior was born in Blackpool

  • steeleye blah blah blah are in a long list of people who have made plenty of money on the back of the padstow obby oss and have never given anything back, you can think this is a bad comment but its the truth

  • Bloody awfull, A Irish tart singing a Cornish May Day song, Padstow Song is unique to Cornwall England, its only sung once a year to chase the devil from the cornish fishing towns and to symbolise a fruitfull harvest of fish for the year, The song dates back to Celtic times, Irish Tarts singing a Cornish song does not bode well.

  • I tink dat Maddy was born in Blackpool and St.Albans. Cheers

  • @alextilson - Get your facts right. Maddy was born in Blackpool, she is not a tart.

  • @Visage95 Ohh are you some sort of judge then

  • @Visage95

now an ol lydee! Granny Pryor can drink even her grandson under the table!

  • @alextilson Since the devil is imaginary I'm sure you'll be fine.

  • we do it better in padstow, after all tis our song

  • @cornishbey27 No you don't - Mayday 2009 was awful - just a rable of disjointed chanting.

  • My dad forced me and my sisters to listen to this as kids and we hated it! Now, as an adult.... I'm forcing MY kids to listen to it 'cos I love it!!

  • One little thing that's always intrigued me about "Padstow": in the middle section "Oh where is King George", the lyrics on Steeleye Span's CD notes refer to "Aunt Ursula Birdhood" but SS sing "Aunt Ursula Burden".

  • It's hard to explain, so I won't try. But this song takes me back to many magical childhood summers. Thank you so much for posting this one!

  • Comment removed

  • No silicone tits, no newspaper headlines about drug affairs, just incredibly good musicians...somewhat oldfashioned, innit? (sad sardonic grin)

  • best female singer of all time love you maddy xx

  • it's not bad. Not as good as the whole of Padstow singing on Mayday though.

  • It sure would be nice if this video of the incomparible Steel eye Span was in sinc

    howabout it nigihayahi

  • The only thing i dont get on there album says by kind permission from the people of padstow hmmmm cant remember anyone sayin that at the mayday meetings .Hope these tree huggers know there is a copy right on this song now !!

  • steeleye span probs the best folk band of there time and probs even now

  • I love it when they sing where is King George apart from saint George cos King george 3 was crazy when they first sang this song in Cornwall

  • this song was sung in padstow long before king george the 3rd was around geez

  • well now cornish is oficialy dead we can all love Maddy

  • well I) meant king George II

  • yeah now you're just back tracking and talking shit really aren't you, and please tell me where it says cornish is dead because that is funny, perhaps it says it in your how to be a complete nob handbook

  • Totally agree!

    Cornish is not dead... TWAT.

    Kernow Bys Viken!

    Onen hag ol!

  • what a song what a singer. Never get tired of listening to it. Have it on my ipod and walk along the beach listening and singing. Absolutrely love maddy prior

  • Thank you for this I like it a lot. I also love the whole Mayday event in Padstow. You can and should appreciate this and the Padstow People's version as two interpretations of a really great folk song. I have always found that the intelligent people of Kernow seem quite friendly to the emmets, especially the ones who spend their money . Camborne Hill anyone?

  • i think you'll find the padstow may song isn't an interpretation its the real mthing

  • I would not dispute that the song sung in Padstow is the original and the most atmospheric, but a good tune is still a good tune, even if you don't like the singers.

  • i agree

  • thanks for putting this back on - I missed it

  • I lived in Padstow and saw many a May Day in there, my daughter was born there too.

This is a lovely version...but after you've heard it practiced from January through to May it can drive you a little crazy!

  • She reminds me of a young Susan Carter...

  • Do you know what I feel here?

I feel like touching the very texture of LIVE itself!Hurray Steel-eye Span!

  • well, what ever takes your fancy.

  • Thanks for posting - fun song, fun video.

  • Go and get help soon .. what an idiot

  • Philistine.

  • yeah lets all stand around calling each other names, really grown up that is no. i cant help you people listen to an seriously awful band and dont like it when people dare to criticise yer favourite thai dye cider swiging tree huggers. spark yer pipe up put yer sandles on and f off why dunt yu

  • Nothing I enjoy more than an intelligent, well written and grammatically correct comment.

  • comb yer beard

  • Right, Padstow in a Yorkshire accent. Ay up, I'll sithee. Reight o.

  • yeah, not really getting that one mate .

  • The only thing better than listening to Maddy sing is watching Maddy sing!

  • Great vid I have all of their albums, and thanks for uploading dude!

  • When you see the amount of money that the pubs, shops, restaurants (you know then ones i mean) rake in on this day it more than surprises me that they need to try and gain any more income as the amount of extra people drawn to the town that day runs into the many thousands. Padstow can be justly proud of its town that day as can a lot of other Cornish Towns ie St Ives New Years Eve, Trevithick Day, Maizey Day and hundreds of others none of which want paying. im not an emmit im a Hake

  • hte people coming here are fine , if you wrote a song and someone else covered it wouldn't you expect some kind of royaltie payment as a sort of thank you, by the way i'm not the old oss party i'm just one person with a view

  • mullet, dont get involved with this mate they're not worth it. you know the truth and so do i thats all that matters. old oss forever

  • your comment was very insulting , did you honestly think its ok to insult someone's heritage , i stand by my previous remark.

  • Hello, desperately trying to find the steeleye span version of the hymn, "Who would true valour see, Let him come hither," from Pilgrim's Progress. What title did SS record it under?

  • Maddy sings this with the Carnival Band on the Wesley album released last year as part of the tour which celebrated the music of John Wesley. Unusual and well worth getting...try Amazon

  • this awful band and others have made thousands of £ from singing our song badly and none of them have put any money into our collection, i wish people would stop making cash on the back of our oss or if they do then they should pay for the right,, shame on these people.... shame on them

  • Oh cheer up!

It's a folk song, who wrote it and are they still alive?

The song probably attracts tourists like me to the Old OSS

  • ..... meant to say, were it not for SS, most people wouldn't even know where Padstow is, let alone go there and spend £'s. So shame on you for being so perochial.

If you can prove you have the rights to the song, I'll be happy to send you £0.01 every time I download it.

  • people here couldn't give a monkeys toss if the likes of you come here or not so dont flatter yourself, also i dont have the rights to the song but the people of padstow do, you can keep your 0.01p and stick it. go and watch your crap little band take your tambourine and cider just for pity sake dont bother coming to padstow because cretins like you are definately not welcome

  • You sound like a truly warm human being (NOT) and if you are typical of the area, then 'the likes of me' will always avoid such a biggoted, opinionated, insignificant Hicksville. So wallow in your little cesspit of an independant state and club together with your neighbours, pool your collective brain cells to provide more objective comments in the future.

  • are you talking about cornish or padstow people?

  • I'm talking about MuddyMullet and his over the top comments.

  • thats not what your comment said, i would expect better coming from an irishman.

  • cespit , i'll think you'll find padstow is in the top ten most expensive places to buy a house in the uk so i dont think so. insignificant hicksville. where are you from 10 downing street?. over educated , middle class, middle aged , 4x4 needs a penis enlargement springs to mind man. but yes i will wallow here i love it just like the 2 million people who come here every year.. they cant all be wrong after all. and dont put" not "in brackets it makes you look like a prick

  • OK MM, It's so easy to take the piss out of you as you respond to every piece of bait.

Think we should get together... I'll pop over to your expensive town with all my transit vans and caravans for a wee break and I somehow recon you'll be the first to tell me to hit the road. Or do you just confine your abuse to hiding behind the anonymity of a PC?

So many expensive houses; so many driveways to tarmac!

  • i wouldnt bother coming here geez as they're all into the red brick in the drive look . personally i prefer tarmac. but your quite welcome here just like everyone else is. as for abuse i think you probably give as good as you get. also i got to say if you're irish and into folk music what the hell are u doing listening to these crowd, they are crap.

  • I'm sad that you should make this comment but unfortunately it reinforces the common, although probably inaccurate, conception that tourists come to Cornwall to be fleeced. By the way this song was not originally Cornish but came from Somerset.

  • somerset?.. I DONT THINK SO idiot.

  • I've noticed that your usual response to people is to insult them. Your comment was inevitable and made me smile.

  • came from somerset?? you have got be having a laugh.

  • Are you some sort of cornish nationalist who is pissed that an English folk group is singing what you percive to be a cornish folk song?

  • where is the song from?

  • why dont you ask the "span" where they got it from?

  • which do i prefer? how about the one sung in padstow, where it should be sung.

  • which one do i prefer? how about the one sung in padstow, where the song should be sung.

  • Many thanks for putting this back on utube, this is far better than the clip that was taken in America

  • Thank you for your promt comment for my up lpoad.
