PLUSHENKO IS THE BEST SKATER EVER! THIS IS NO ARGUMENT! HE HAS CHARISMA, HE IS SO SPECIAL AND UNIQUE! His skating sometimes funny, sometimes passionate, sometimes beautiful! I don't tired of his skating. I watch him every day.
YAGUDIN is more sincere-MANY reasons he has to stop competing i am sure one reason is to let go of proving peole after he got the 2002 GOLD. SOMETIMES being happy is letting go of the crown to someone who is competitve. YAGUDIN doesn't have to go down to that level. HE GOT GOLDS. no need to get more and more.
Actually, Yagudin beats Plushenko in most of the Important events: Olympics, Worlds...So I guess your statistics mainly based on Russia's Nationals, in which of course Plushenko always rules, because his coach Mishin doesn't want to be pissed off by Alexei Yagudin even in his own country!
Well Plushenko might be the King, but Alexei Yagudin is the living God on ice!
@aberrantmoon I think they are both great, but you should not put down Plushenko because due to the Age Difference. I think, you are don't know Plushenko's programs, because he write false things. If you want to the true, you watch this programs: Moonlight Sonata, Tango and Flamenco, Adagio, or Tribute to Nijinsky. Yagudin wasn't such artistry, never. When you watch this, answer to himself: Is Plushenko only jumping mashine? But you adore Yagudin of course....No problem.
If there was a yag in 2006 maybe plush would have skated even better, but there was noone to challenge him, he had been waiting for this moment for 4 years through injuries, I loved them both, and there is no use for fight, one became better because the other one existed. They had too much different style and both have written their gold pages in fs.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one thinking that way. It would be great to see another perfect couple of rivals like them. There are good skaters even now, but I often feel like I'm watching some kind of dance on ice more than a true sport. I like dance, but in a competition I want to see ice skating, which is a sport: Yagudin and Plushenko are both true skaters. Love them.
You don't get much better than these two. Yagudin's Olympic performance was clearly one of the most memorable in history, but you can't blame Plushy for playing it safe in 2006 considering all his rivals were splatting. Plus, he was already suffering from injuries by that time and was past his prime. The competition in 2002 is unmatched. 7 quads landed in the LPs of the medalists while in 2006, only 2 quads (and the silver and bronze medalists both had falls).
I wouldn't even call that a rivalry. Alexei won 3 world championships against plushenko and lost only once in 2001 when he was suffering from a severe foot injury. and Alexei won the gold medal at the Olympics in a land slide. So no comparison:D
But in the 3 championships that Yagudin won, Plushenko was still very immature. And plushenko has beaten him many times on World and Euro and Russian stages. I just think that the two of them are both unmatched and I wished that rivalry could've lasted longer. Yagudin seems to be sweeter as far as personality goes......
Plushenko beat him ONCE on the World Stage in 2001, Euros twice, and Russian Nationals - Alexei doesn't even care about "those" lol. Alexei already won 5 gold from Worlds and Euros by 2000 - it's not easy being the best all the time hence his collapse during 2000-2001.
Plushenko is exceptional. This was Alexei's second time in the Olympics, and he was in really good condition. Plushenko was much younger, with the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. He also had a foot injury, which highly affected his jumps. That day Alexei got what he deserved, but that still doesn't prove he's better. But in essence - EVGENY IS THE BEST FIGURE SKATER. :D
Alexei was 17 in his first Olympics, Plushenko was turning 19 in 2002. I wouldn't say Plush is much younger than Alexei, there is less than three years difference between the two. Also, there is definite advantage to being young as an athelete. Todd was 29 at the time, so was he the best when he was obviously the oldest?
Plushenko is great, but Yagudin is exceptional. They have passion, but in my opinion- Alexei's performance are always breathtaking- pure masterpieces.
I don't know who I like more. I'm leaning towards Yagudin. I loved Plushenko too though. As far as their winning Olympic skates go... Yagudins was at least 10x better. Plushenkos was good, but not his best he's done. He could have done better. Could have had more passion. Yagudin skated FULL OUT for his olympic performances, and just did amazing. Anybody who watched that would just feel so happy for him immediately.
I don't think Plushenko is in the same league with yagudin. Especially when it comes to their Olympic performances, Yagudin's was a pure masterpiece while Plushenko's was.... Ugrrrrrrr!

*Since 1996 he won 52 Gold Medals!
So what? Did he win that 2002 SLC one? That gold medal is the Holy Grail in all golds. Quantity means nothing compared with Quality!
*Since 1998 he received 75 times the perfect mark 6.0!
But he never got even "A" 6.0 in Olympics, the highest standard competition, while Alexei Yagudin won "Six" 6.0s in 2002 SLC winter Olympics!
