What is this "here in america" trash I hear you people saying about those in poverty? I do agree many suffer because of their own choices, but wouldn't a good choice be to not starve AND not waste? I get 60 dollars worth of free vegetables and pizza every time I dumpster, simply because I cannot carry anymore and someone is going to try to tell me that im the one not doing anything? When's the last time you got good and dirty for something you wanted?
i heard that in some scandinavian states they DO poisen the garbage so that nobody can steal them. it's sooo unbelivable ridiculous!!! but if some nut wants to inject poisen into food, he can also do this IN the store.....
in germany garbage dumping is stealing and if cought, u can be in trouble. but the scene grows ;)
its really not gross.... and its not like they are eating rotten food that's been sitting in a hot steamy trash can for weeks. they are just making use of all of the food that gets wasted because of tiny imperfections or past "sell by" dates. it is especially safe and not gross at all to "dumpster dive" for food during the winter when its under 41 degrees; a temperature at which the majority of bacteria cannot survive.

So now the homeless and real poor people, who dumpsterdive for food because they have no choice, need to compete with people who do it for luxurious reasons? People who could buy their food if they wanted to but like the excitement of dumpsterdiving and to be special by call themselves "freegans"? @ratzubfersarat That isn't true. Here in America, people put themselves in situation to be poor. Weather that is due to problems with drugs, or they have no desire to work. Just because someone is successfully in life and isn't living on the streets, doesn't mean their fat. You want to make something of yourself, you have to work out at it, and most people do not have that attitude towards life. Most people in this country do not want to work and want other people to give them what they need.
I was homeless for almost 2 y ears living in a salvaiton army men hostel, and they had breakfast lunch and dinner everyday there, I ate okay, not the best food in the world but good enough, nobody that stayed there, went dumpster diving, because they had enough food to eat. Most think homeless are those who live in a sleeping bag on the street, but the government defines homeless as "of no fixed adreess" and living in a hostel qualifies for that. So society has preconditioned thinking.
I myself work with homeless people in Sweden so I know there's those who's living in shelters and so and don't dumpsterdive, but there's also those who won't accept the help of various reasons and sleeps out and dumpsterdive.
I have never been to sweden, but in Toronto there is less and less street people living on the street here, as now even there are city street patrols who go out in vans to try to get the homeless into hostels, but as you say many dont trust the government and dont want hostel stays, but that is a very very small percentage of homeless now here.
In Sweden there's more homeless now but as you say it's in Toronto a very few who don't trust the government enough to takethe help it offers. Well, I really hope that this freegan trend will be an eye opener for society on the waste of resourses instead of just locks on dumpsters and harder times for those, maybe few but anyway, who lives in the perifery of society and actually have used the dumpsters for their survival.

I don't understand these freegans, because without businesses they wouldn't have food in the first place to take from the trash. Same with growing your own garden, you have to pay someone for the seeds you grow and so on. They don't make any sense in what they do.

The fact that the freegans HARDLY EVER get food poisoning means 2 things:
1. Their healthy immune system, as I notice that most of them are probably in their twenties.
2. It proves once more the flaws of Pasteur's germ theory.
To get an infection you need 2 things:
a)susceptible immune system
b)germs
It takes 2 to tango!
