There seems to be two different philosophical views of the matrix.

One is the references to idealism, as opposed to materialism. any 1st year philosophy student can recite the definitions and give a basic difference between the two.

But the second is also very interesting. the 'economic/political' enslavement. This I think will 'trip' some people into accepting a more (contemporary left position) rather than taking up a more classical libertarian position, sadly.

I think you can see in the matrix a lot of different religions/cultures, like buddhism or idealism, but you can also see the message about the control, and it really gets you to think what doest it mean to get unplugged. People who dont understand it tend to trash it, but people who understand the true value of the movie show a great deal of positive reactions when it comes to Matrix.

If our live are structured in a way in which it inhibits us to see the structuring layers, things that might create setbacks for us as human beings, then it is important to find ways to understands these structures and break free from them.
