  • Does it hit most of the time or miss most of the time?

  • What year is this? I saw a 1937 John Deere hit-and-miss engine that was running a homemade ice-cream mixer and the product was so good, mechanically and gastronomically. :)

  • what does it do when it coughes

  • sounds like it burps! burp......burp......burp

  • i see somting moving can you power it with your hand?

  • ok I've tried looking it up etc.. but my googling must fail.. can someone explain a hit and miss engine

  • @goofy775 it hits and misses...it wont fire on every revolition...they depend on rotating mass to keep it running...the random hit keeps it spinning

  • stupid!

  • sweet motor like very old man!!!

  • Oh man that is so cool! You can even see the flywheels decreasing in speed and then right when it hits they are almost instantly back up to speed! I want one!

  • great corn grinder.

  • Were they designed to be hit and miss?

  • yes they were, great engine.

  • nice engine!!!

  • Fantastic engine, here in europe the John Deere engines are very rare.

  • These old J.D.'s are so smooth,...very nice.

  • lovely engine! for more examples of hit-and-miss governor, look at the Bolinder videos, again a very distinctive hit-and-miss sound

  • so thatpushrod mecanism is opening the intake or exhaust?? valve because ive been studing and aprrantly the intake gets sucked open on the intake stroke and how does it click every so often then start clicking fast does it un of a little lobe and lifter??

  • The pushrod opens the exhaust. When above a set speed a flyweight gov allows a rod to fall into a detent locking the exhaust valve open and interrupting the spark by holding open a set of contacts. Holding the valve open won't allow vacuum to build in the cylinder so a fuel charge won't be drawn in. When the gov pulls the rod from the detent the pushrod and lifter fall back onto the cam allowing the valve to close. A contact is also closed to allow the plug to spark and fire the engine.

  • so why does it click like every 2 scnds or so??? i want to learn more about stationary engines....

  • Sounds like old tortoises having sex to me.

  • @DemoFly XD

  • Nice engine ... I love the snorting sound ;)

  • every 8 tourns it hit the fule making that puff they worked rally well

  • why do that call it a hit miss engine??

  • It only fires every 4 or 5 strokes. Due to a large flywheel it has enough inertia to freewheel with the valves open until the speed drops and the valves close, alowing compression and therefore a power stroke.

  • it has a governor, which holds the exhaust valve open when its spinning above a minimum speed. this causes the engine to coast. when it drops below minimum speed, it lets the exhaust close normally and fire. if you were to apply some load to the engine, it would fire on almost every stroke to keep it up to speed. the snorting sound is because the intake valve is held shut with a weak spring but has no cam driving it, it just kinda snorts open when there's enough vacuum to draw in some air.

  • how else do you start it?

  • I am no expert but he means your thumb position. Theres a good video on how to start a lister D. It shows you the correct method.

  • Exactly, do not wrap your thumb around it, or you can risk injury or worse if it misfires. This is from crank starting cars.

  • Starting like that is a good way to end up with a broken thumb!!

  • thats realy usefull, but can u give me a site were i can get some info??

  • i almoast know for sure the exhoust valve closes when the RPM drops below a specific point, the engine builds up pressiure and ignites.

i now know how the valve system works, but how can you get the fuel as efficient possible into the engine, i'm thinking of an LPG version, that shouldnt be that difficult.

  • if you end up putting a fuel injection system on yours i would like to know about it...

  • i like that strobing affect of the motor, makes it look like its not running fast at all or stopped

    nice engine though

  • i wanna build one myself, but havnt figured out how it realy works, especialy how the vuilve closes. somebody HELP

  • the governor hold open the exhaust valve until it needs to fire again. the intake is spring loaded, so when the exhaust is closed it will open. the spark fires every time.

  • its cool how the handle pulls back in by itself

  • its a spring, mine has it.. i broke it tho and gotta fix it
