What year is this? I saw a 1937 John Deere hit-and-miss engine that was running a homemade ice-cream mixer and the product was so good, mechanically and gastronomically. :)
Oh man that is so cool! You can even see the flywheels decreasing in speed and then right when it hits they are almost instantly back up to speed! I want one!
so thatpushrod mecanism is opening the intake or exhaust?? valve because ive been studing and aprrantly the intake gets sucked open on the intake stroke and how does it click every so often then start clicking fast does it un of a little lobe and lifter??
The pushrod opens the exhaust. When above a set speed a flyweight gov allows a rod to fall into a detent locking the exhaust valve open and interrupting the spark by holding open a set of contacts. Holding the valve open won't allow vacuum to build in the cylinder so a fuel charge won't be drawn in. When the gov pulls the rod from the detent the pushrod and lifter fall back onto the cam allowing the valve to close. A contact is also closed to allow the plug to spark and fire the engine.
It only fires every 4 or 5 strokes. Due to a large flywheel it has enough inertia to freewheel with the valves open until the speed drops and the valves close, alowing compression and therefore a power stroke.
it has a governor, which holds the exhaust valve open when its spinning above a minimum speed. this causes the engine to coast. when it drops below minimum speed, it lets the exhaust close normally and fire. if you were to apply some load to the engine, it would fire on almost every stroke to keep it up to speed. the snorting sound is because the intake valve is held shut with a weak spring but has no cam driving it, it just kinda snorts open when there's enough vacuum to draw in some air.
i almoast know for sure the exhoust valve closes when the RPM drops below a specific point, the engine builds up pressiure and ignites.
i now know how the valve system works, but how can you get the fuel as efficient possible into the engine, i'm thinking of an LPG version, that shouldnt be that difficult.
the governor hold open the exhaust valve until it needs to fire again. the intake is spring loaded, so when the exhaust is closed it will open. the spark fires every time.
Does it hit most of the time or miss most of the time?

ok I've tried looking it up etc.. but my googling must fail.. can someone explain a hit and miss engine
goofy775 1 year ago
@goofy775 it hits and misses...it wont fire on every revolition...they depend on rotating mass to keep it running...the random hit keeps it spinning

Fantastic engine, here in europe the John Deere engines are very rare.

lovely engine! for more examples of hit-and-miss governor, look at the Bolinder videos, again a very distinctive hit-and-miss sound

why do that call it a hit miss engine??

how else do you start it?
tomgeier 4 years ago
I am no expert but he means your thumb position. Theres a good video on how to start a lister D. It shows you the correct method.
geoff390 3 years ago
Exactly, do not wrap your thumb around it, or you can risk injury or worse if it misfires. This is from crank starting cars.
Spule4 3 years ago 2
Starting like that is a good way to end up with a broken thumb!!

if you end up putting a fuel injection system on yours i would like to know about it...

i like that strobing affect of the motor, makes it look like its not running fast at all or stopped
nice engine though
