NO MATCH RACE!
But its not just her breaking down like this. I saw a japanese filly nowadays suffering the same. Her front leg was weak and the race too hard for her, she went down the track at last position but tried everything she can. And that was the end because her leg broke the same kind as Ruffians did.

Never push a horse too hard. It will only break them.

Ruffian struck her shoulder coming out of the gate. In an interview with Frank, he said that if happened at the chutes when she hit her shoulder. Her heart kept her going down to the backstretch. When Go For Wand broke down in the 1990 Distaff, it was said that she truly broke her leg around twelve strides before she went down, but with their hearts, they push past the pain. I'd know. I have a racer, he's broken his leg twice, the same bones that Ruffian broke, her sesamoids.

When I saw the break... I just couldn't watch. I new a horse once who broke his leg, the owners tried so hard to save him.

No matter how many times I watch this, the guy at 6:53 makes my jaw clench. the truly great racehorses are the ones that the jockeys dont need to whip to get there head first past the finishing post, the truly great ones are the ones, like ruffian, that gallop along a racetrack just for the pure love of it

@fromdreamtodream I agree deeply. 2-3 year old fillies should not be participating in match races, espeshally since her bones and mind and stamina haven't aged as they should. It's ignorant for people to think that racing at such a young age is better for the horse, or better for racing. Most racehorses quit racing at ages 5-7, since the horses are raced so young, therefore they get problems like arthritis.

@fromdreamtodream Actually training before that age helps develop the bones and prevent injuries, the difference is they shouldn't be mounted until they are fully developed. They can't cope with the extra weight then.
@fromdreamtodream Ruffian died from a disease called 'soft bones' which is a genetic disorder. Secretariat has Bold Ruler as his father. Ruffian has Bold Ruler as her grandfather. You can see why these wouldn't be able to breed because of inbreeding, which causes this disease.

I bawled like a baby- something I never do- when I saw this movie. To see her run like a champion....then to see her leg snap and flop like a piece of jello as she screamed in pain, was heartbreaking. I think what touched me the most though was how the jockey had to fight her to slow down- she still wanted to do what she loved the most and run. :'(

Ruffian is so simmilar to Secretarit (know i probably spelt his name wrong) I mean she is his neice after all, she broke/set many track records much like him, yet she never lost a race. I love them both.
But i think she would have won if she hadn't hit her left shoulder on the gate therefore putting all her weight on her right foreleg. Foolish Pleasure's jocky should have (in my opinion) should have slowed him down/stopped. 'cause wither way he won that race by defult. <3 u Ruffian. R.I.P
@EvraVonKat You're wrong. if Foolish Pleasure stops, then no one is declared the winner. And those who bet on FP will probably kill the jockey before he can exit the stadium. As far as him slowing down...he did. The movie may not show it but he galloped at medium speed the rest of the way.
I cry every time! I love this movie and Ruffian was and is my favorite racehorse, and it's horrible to go that way! I cant even imagen the pain she was in! When if first saw this i knew she was going to break down, but not that badly, or at least not her entire foot hanging by a thread! I cant beleive she kept going! I don't blame her, though. she loved to run. Imagen pairing ruffian and secretariat...what a foal that would be! RIP Ruffian!!! We all will love you forever!

Omg what a horrible break! I knew she was gonna breack it but that seriously shocked me! If I was them I would have seen to it to shoot the horse on the place and put it out of it's misery..=(
It shocked me too, but when you have the time and patience, you can let a horse live a normal live after healing. We've had one at home. Took all winter, but he got better! After almost a year he was ready to be riden again.
Shooting her would be selfish!! She can still be a great mother or pleasure riding horse.

When I saw the break... I just couldn't watch. I new a horse once who broke his leg, the owners tried so hard to save him.
To the people saying "Just shoot her", at least they tried. At least they tried to save her. A lot of other people probably wouldn't even have given her a chance.

No matter how many times I watch this, the guy at 6:53 makes my jaw clench. I know there are always those who are going to be dicks about the whole situation and make fun later, but right as the horse broke it's leg and people are standing there traumatized is an ultimate sick, sick, sick point to start gloating and making fun.

@scoutramsay He was a total DOUCHE I agree, but he made valid point...albeit with no tact. FP was the first real competition Ruffian ever faced. Up til then she raced horses, that in boxing circles they'd call the "Bum of the month club"

I think horses are raced too early, thier bones have not developed yet, that's why things like this happen. Like in any other discipline, horses should be at least 4-5 years old to begin training, with their bodies fully grown and their bones strong, plus their minds have to grow too

@fromdreamtodream I agree deeply. 2-3 year old fillies should not be participating in match races, espeshally since her bones and mind and stamina haven't aged as they should. It's ignorant for people to think that racing at such a young age is better for the horse, or better for racing. Most racehorses quit racing at ages 5-7, since the horses are raced so young, therefore they get problems like arthritis.
Ruffian's legend will live on forever.

@fromdreamtodream i completely agree then they would be faster more mature and a you said their bones would be much stronger i know i dont start any horse of mine before 3 1/2 and dont start full-fledged riding until 4. i really dont understand why they have to race them so early its senseless

@fromdreamtodream Actually training before that age helps develop the bones and prevent injuries, the difference is they shouldn't be mounted until they are fully developed. They can't cope with the extra weight then.

@fromdreamtodream Ruffian died from a disease called 'soft bones' which is a genetic disorder. Secretariat has Bold Ruler as his father. Ruffian has Bold Ruler as her grandfather. You can see why these wouldn't be able to breed because of inbreeding, which causes this disease.

I bawled like a baby- something I never do- when I saw this movie. To see her run like a champion....then to see her leg snap and flop like a piece of jello as she screamed in pain, was heartbreaking. I think what touched me the most though was how the jockey had to fight her to slow down- she still wanted to do what she loved the most and run. :'(

this is so sad I luv ruffian so much and I cried when a watched this! Ruffian is one of my fav racehorses and I knew it was gonna happen but when it did I just paused it ad stared like "that isn't real that did not just happen" and then I cried rip ruffian!

Ruffian is so simmilar to Secretarit (know i probably spelt his name wrong) I mean she is his neice after all, she broke/set many track records much like him, yet she never lost a race. I love them both.
But i think she would have won if she hadn't hit her left shoulder on the gate therefore putting all her weight on her right foreleg. Foolish Pleasure's jocky should have (in my opinion) should have slowed him down/stopped. 'cause wither way he won that race by defult. <3 u Ruffian. R.I.P

@EvraVonKat You're wrong. if Foolish Pleasure stops, then no one is declared the winner. And those who bet on FP will probably kill the jockey before he can exit the stadium. As far as him slowing down...he did. The movie may not show it but he galloped at medium speed the rest of the way.

I cry every time! I love this movie and Ruffian was and is my favorite racehorse, and it's horrible to go that way! I cant even imagen the pain she was in! When if first saw this i knew she was going to break down, but not that badly, or at least not her entire foot hanging by a thread! I cant beleive she kept going! I don't blame her, though. she loved to run. Imagen pairing ruffian and secretariat...what a foal that would be! RIP Ruffian!!! We all will love you forever!

The first time i watched the whole movie i cried :'( Thats why now when i watch it i pause it a little into the race so i dont have to see her leg break and cry all over again :(

It shocked me too, but when you have the time and patience, you can let a horse live a normal live after healing. We've had one at home. Took all winter, but he got better! After almost a year he was ready to be riden again.
Shooting her would be selfish!! She can still be a great mother or pleasure riding horse.

It would still be the same effect as well, since he was pretty much the colt equivelent of Ruffian! And I bet if it were him, you would STILL be ignorant enough to wish it on her instead!!!!

I've read so many disgusting things said here about Foolish Pleasure, his jockey, trainer and owner. All this despite the fact that FP and his handlers did NOTHING WRONG. FP didn't bump Ruffian or cause her leg to be broken. They didn't celebrate her injury. Yet they still get blamed for it. BTW, FP can't stop. Horse racing rules won't allow it.

And this was just an accident cause she hit the left side of the gate but jumped out of it, with other words; for a moment, Ruffians leg carried more then her own body weight on this single leg.
