the machine that you see is called 8000 or 8K made by sarns ,that is owned by Terumo cardiovascular system ,located in Ann arbor Michigan, yeah man it is made in the U.S
this system comes with 4 roller pumps a arterial and cardio monitor and safety monitor,,,they constantly check for pressure ,temperature , blood level in the reservoir and most important air bubble ,they use the state of the art ultra sonic sensors for level and air bubble detection,
So once you get everything going, what are the things you need to maintain? I'm guessing BP and Temp, What else?
Would be really cool is someone could break this video down for us laymen. I'm interested in doing this, just want to know what I'm getting myself into!
@birthdaythesuit00 Flow is most important thing to maintain, along with BP. Also need to monitor, assess, and manage anticoagulation status, blood gases and electrolytes, blood volume, administer blood products if needed, manipulate temperature (circulatory arrest with deep hypothermia procedures), maintain myocardial protection, administer drugs, record-keeping, and dealing with the "variables" or problems that pop up.
i was bored at work cruising around and i found this video. i kept thinking, man that really looks like sean rider (i even recognized him with the mask). and there you have it. is your coffee on the red cart behind you. hehe
Thanks for posting this! I am interested in this career. I'm a college sophomore and it's coming down to the wire for me to choose a career. How's the job outlook for perfusionists?
Thank you for posting! It's amazing what we are capable of, technologically speaking. I'm curious, when you look up towards your left side, what are you looking at? I'm seriously condiering Perfusion as a career path, would you be open to answering a few questions via email? Thank you again for your post, it is nice to have a little taste of what goes on behind the scenes.
@More2Life4me I'm looking at a monitor showing the patient's vitals such as ECG, arterial pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, central venous pressure, pulse oximetry, and temperature.
@More2Life4me Yes, I definitely think so. Along with the engineering portion (which is mostly electrical engineering with a hint of mechanical), you get a pretty good amount of physiology as well. It's definitely worth it.
Hank from Birmingham/Tuscaloosa...18 years..I Perfused over 2,500 cases (to include Heart transplants)and NEVER had a mishap and was only Certified El.. John and Jim Kirklin..Albert Pacifico..The late Robert Karp..George Zorn..Nick Kouchoukos..Barry Newsom..Stancil Riley..McElvin..Terry Olivet..John Ferguson among others!
Let's see: He is pushing blood at 2.4L/M2/min. (garden hose flow about 5000cc/min.) He is in total control of BP. He is in total control of temp. He is in total control of PA02 He is in total control of anesthesia. He is in total control of coronary perfusion. He is running a sump pump to keep the L Ventricle empty. He running two suctions to salvage blood lost. He is sued more than any other type of technician in medicine. I did this 35 years...NOT boring. This guy is a hero...
this is cool...

@heartm8 DOH!..... LOL, it's there you just can't see it. The blood backfilled the bypass line distal to the clamp.

Awesome video. I'm finishing up undergrad this year (biomedical engineering), and I'll be starting perfusion in the fall.

But is it true that there aren't enough positions available for Perfusionists anymore?
vi3tb0y04 3 years ago
Man our job looks boring! You forgot to RAP tho, you could displace 1000cc of crystalloid...better for the patient.
mjcclz 3 years ago
it's really hard though.
And if he makes a mistake...well you know..
AshleyTisdaleFan2228 2 years ago
I will try to make a video of RAP technique soon.
