  • Well, I learned that dicking around gives you the ability to write heavy ass riffs

  • Comment removed

  • of course we've got a rhythm section!

  • Matt pike = THE MAN

  • Reason #432234636623626 why Matt is fucking awesome.

  • matt is such a underated guitarist. he deserves alot more credit than hes gotten

  • that guitar is bad ass

  • Cool tune...my first time hearing it.. I am into playing riffs like this on my own...

  • whos the guy with the shirt?

  • jeezus. he's wearing a shirt, he's playing an odd ass guitar with some funky tuning, playing one of my all time favorite riffs (with some killer tone), AND he kinda discredits his own value to his legendary band. Yeah, Al and Chris are great, but without Matt "fillin' up" the mix, we'd just have Om..... wait, that's not a bad thing... but Sleep still rules.

  • he's wearing a shirt... odd...

  • @Fryurface haha

  • thats a pretty epic riff

  • what kinda guitar is that he's using?

  • @taurnill I may be wrong (probably am) but me thinks he uses custom First Act 9-strings.

  • Im going to see this motherfucker play this live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TONE OF THE GODS

  • This proves again....the slower you play, the heavier it gets...take note black metal.

  • That guitar tone is so good, it makes you wanna slap your momma!!

  • A nine-string guitar?

  • @MrJeppelin Yea, the 3 low strings (E A D) are like a standard 6 string, and the 3 high strings (G B e) are doubled up like a 12 string. Brent Hinds from Mastodon also has/uses one.

  • @domtar Thanks for the info. Six strings are enough for me. On the other hand I´m not Matt Pike.

  • Sounds like some sick ass tone to me.

  • "Vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular pulsating change of pitch." As a guitarist, you can do this by moving your finger from left to right (like a violinist), or by bending the string up and down, both are correct. The extent of the pitch variation is how far away from the original pitch you go back and forth from and the rate of vibrato is the speed at which the pitch is varied. This is illustrated quite well by Andy Aledort in one of his videos.

  • @cmgkag

hell yes, my friend. just listen to Sabbath!

  • @cmgkag vibrato is moving fingers slightly from left to right-like a violinist. What he is doing is string bending up and down quickly-not the same sound and very easy to do on an electric guitar.

  • @cmgkag

lol vibrato on a power chord is super easy.

  • He almost seemed hesitant to say Al and Chris's name, there.

  • @cmgkag Yea, I just discovered this guy an hour ago and I'm completely amazed at his style as its insanely similar to a style I use ALL the time!! Yes, it's difficult to the average guitarist or even the speed shredder to use power slides and octave slides like this, I use them ALL the time in some really heavy jams to brighten things up, dropped tuning combined with octave sliding is pretty intense, its like good vs evil. Grease is a must after the strings are well broken in also.

  • Matt Pike is not a guitarist, he is a warrior, a doom warlord.

  • I fuckin' met Matt Pike at a Pentagram show, he is the shit!!!

  • @DoomMetalSludge pentagram show AND MATT PIKE... jesus fucking christ you lucky bastard :)

  • @13aaronstarnes Yeah it was fucking legit!

  • This dude rocks!!!!!

  • @cmgkag Exactly!

  • 9 string guitar??

  • What kind of tuning is this??? C? doesnt sound standard.

  • @santanaincubus C,F,A#,D#,D#,G,G,C,C

  • @otusqueeky1 thanks man.

  • @otusqueeky1 Did he use this tuning also with Sleep or only with High on Fire?

  • @otusqueeky1 c standard taking into account pikes treble strings?

  • @santanaincubus just play your bass, should be heavy enough ;)

  • @jimmyredpant thanks man.

  • Mmmm dat distortion

  • So simple yet so driving. I have to agree with the statement about pike being a god among men.

  • Its cool that he sounds like he's playing rhythm and lead at the same time for some of the parts.

    Must be the guitar :D.

  • @AirHendrix91 I think it's just him, haha

  • @otusqueeky1 Doesn't he use a 9 string guitar to get that chorus effect? Either way, its bad ass :D.

This dude is such a nice guy for being a guitarist honestly.

  • @AirHendrix91 Yeah, he has two sets of the "GBE" strings. It's kinda sweet, haha.

Yeah! He'd be cool to meet one day!

  • @otusqueeky1 It's the eight-string he's playing. And it's not some metalcore eight-string either. Got a slick chorus-y sound to it.

  • @skingrifter Nah, it's a 9-string First Act. The tuning on it would be EADGGBBEE if Matt had it in standard tuning. It's one kick ass guitar! Would be nice to try one like that one day!

  • @skingrifter Oh yeah, and I agree, it ain't no pussy-ass metal/deathcore guitar. Fuck that shit!

  • @skingrifter its a 9 string

  • @skingrifter Check again man He is playing a Nine String

  • @100wattLaneyPower Oh dude! Why have so many people met him? Damn it!

  • @MarshallRoberts Yeah dude I've seen that model a few times. Our secondary guitarist almost bought it. I personally would get something like that as my first guitar and later save up for a Gibson Les Paul. By the way it's Otu, haha

  • Hells yeea!!!

  • @Houdini116 I don't give a shit, it's Matt Pike playing The Druid.

  • @otusqueeky1 Well said, brother.

  • @Houdini116 My monkey couldn't play this. His bends suck.

  • Okay, I meant your average monkey.

  • @Houdini116 Don't dis my monkey home dog he tries hard.

  • @Houdini116 Because only Matt Pike could make the most retarded riff sound like it came from the heavens to destroy us all.

  • @Houdini116 - a riff doesn't have to be difficult to rock... yes, this is simple, but it's so awesomely heavy it grabs you by the balls!

  • @Houdini116 Well...you suck dick don't you :)

  • @Houdini116 u sir are a moron

  • @NotSober100 All of you guys seem to have misinterpreted what I said. I never said that I disliked Sleep or Matt Pike. My comment said that I didn't think a "lesson" for the main riff to The Druid was necessary. That's like asking for a lesson to play Dopesmoker. Both are very badass songs, but I don't think a lesson to play 3 power chords is necessary.

  • @Houdini116 Yeah, but it's still Matt Pike from Sleep playing The Druid, so to us it's still a big "Wow... it's Matt Pike showing us how to play it".

  • @Houdini116 Yea but dude, you know ACDC, fuckin simple shit, but its NOT easy to play, you gotta get proper technique, timing etc, which Matt is showing us
