jeezus. he's wearing a shirt, he's playing an odd ass guitar with some funky tuning, playing one of my all time favorite riffs (with some killer tone), AND he kinda discredits his own value to his legendary band. Yeah, Al and Chris are great, but without Matt "fillin' up" the mix, we'd just have Om..... wait, that's not a bad thing... but Sleep still rules.
@MrJeppelin Yea, the 3 low strings (E A D) are like a standard 6 string, and the 3 high strings (G B e) are doubled up like a 12 string. Brent Hinds from Mastodon also has/uses one.
"Vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular pulsating change of pitch." As a guitarist, you can do this by moving your finger from left to right (like a violinist), or by bending the string up and down, both are correct. The extent of the pitch variation is how far away from the original pitch you go back and forth from and the rate of vibrato is the speed at which the pitch is varied. This is illustrated quite well by Andy Aledort in one of his videos.
@cmgkag vibrato is moving fingers slightly from left to right-like a violinist. What he is doing is string bending up and down quickly-not the same sound and very easy to do on an electric guitar.
@cmgkag Yea, I just discovered this guy an hour ago and I'm completely amazed at his style as its insanely similar to a style I use ALL the time!! Yes, it's difficult to the average guitarist or even the speed shredder to use power slides and octave slides like this, I use them ALL the time in some really heavy jams to brighten things up, dropped tuning combined with octave sliding is pretty intense, its like good vs evil. Grease is a must after the strings are well broken in also.
@skingrifter Nah, it's a 9-string First Act. The tuning on it would be EADGGBBEE if Matt had it in standard tuning. It's one kick ass guitar! Would be nice to try one like that one day!
@MarshallRoberts Yeah dude I've seen that model a few times. Our secondary guitarist almost bought it. I personally would get something like that as my first guitar and later save up for a Gibson Les Paul. By the way it's Otu, haha
@NotSober100 All of you guys seem to have misinterpreted what I said. I never said that I disliked Sleep or Matt Pike. My comment said that I didn't think a "lesson" for the main riff to The Druid was necessary. That's like asking for a lesson to play Dopesmoker. Both are very badass songs, but I don't think a lesson to play 3 power chords is necessary.
@Houdini116 Yea but dude, you know ACDC, fuckin simple shit, but its NOT easy to play, you gotta get proper technique, timing etc, which Matt is showing us
Well, I learned that dicking around gives you the ability to write heavy ass riffs

@domtar Thanks for the info. Six strings are enough for me. On the other hand I´m not Matt Pike.

Sounds like some sick ass tone to me.

@otusqueeky1 Doesn't he use a 9 string guitar to get that chorus effect? Either way, its bad ass :D.
This dude is such a nice guy for being a guitarist honestly.

@AirHendrix91 Yeah, he has two sets of the "GBE" strings. It's kinda sweet, haha.
Yeah! He'd be cool to meet one day!
otusqueeky1 1 year ago
@otusqueeky1 It's the eight-string he's playing. And it's not some metalcore eight-string either. Got a slick chorus-y sound to it.
