When he said that, I thought back to 2003 when Jamal Lewis was threatening to break Eric Dickerson's single season NFL rushing record. As a Huge Pens fan, even I will admit that nobody can touch Gretzky. I think that in a 1 on 1 game Lemieux would beat Greatzy, but Gretzky was the best team player ever. Crosby, Lemieux, Howe, Orr....nobody is close to him. He's by far the best.
I live in the town he was born in. Brantford has a hockey arena made in his honour and its fucking massive. Its THE hockey place. I love his father. Walter is always at major city events signing autographs and is always so active despite his old age. I know just looking at this that I am proud to be Canadian.

If Orr had played a full career then I would probably would have to call him the greatest of all-time. However, I would rather 20 elite seasons of Gretzky then 9 elite seasons of Orr.

So if Orr played exactly the same amount of games as Gretzky, Orr would still be 800 POINTS BEHIND Gretzky. Yes thats not a typo, 800 points. Is that ridiculous or what? Most NHL players dont score 800 points in their entire careers and thats what Orr would be behind if he played the same amount of games.

I wish I could have seen Orr play everyday, Im young enough to have missed 75% of Gretzky's career but at least while Gretzky played a lot of his games were taped so we get to see most if not all of his career. Like you said, its hard enough to compare two players that play different positions. Then throw in the fact that they are from two different era's it makes it almost impossible to compare them.
I know people who've met him who would dispute you on his humility. But as a hockey player, he was indisputedly one of a small class of athletes who would be considered the best ever in their sport, and his numbers reflected that.

Wayne Gretzky is one person i would like to meet personally. A very clever man who entertained so many people throughout his career. My hometown of Brisbane, Australia will never have a competitive hockey team compared to Canada, America. My last sight of Wayne was at the Madison Square Garden with the Rangers, thanks for the great memories.

He was amazing to see in person. Living in an Eastern Conference City, I got to see him only once a year, but it was amazing when you did. the other players in Edmonton: Kurri, Coofey, Anderson, Fuhr, Lowe Moog, etc. It was an amazing team.

So if Orr played in the same amount of games he would have had 2066 points which is still 800 less then Gretzky and thats giving Orr the benefit of not having his points taper off as he ages

Just to confirm for you that I am not a gretzky fan, I grew up in Chicago and then moved to Arizona and got to watch from 2006 to 2009 as Gretzky stole money from the Coyotes as he was the highest paid coach in all of the NHL and put out one of the worst teams in the NHL. He was so bad for the Coyotes that by himself he almost caused them to have to leave Az. The first year he leaves the Coyotes make the playoffs and it looks like the team is staying in Az, I hate Gretzky.

Man I Wish I had the as much passion for some thing like that. when I was a wee lad down in south Carolina I played youth street hockey. and even though I wasn't very good I can remember coming home from practice one evening feeling weak and beat to hell and I just went up stares and crashed and it felt so damn good. As a Huge Pens fan, even I will admit that nobody can touch Gretzky. I think that in a 1 on 1 game Lemieux would beat Greatzy, but Gretzky was the best team player ever. Crosby, Lemieux, Howe, Orr....nobody is close to him. He's by far the best.

I live in the town he was born in. Brantford has a hockey arena made in his honour and its fucking massive. Its THE hockey place. I love his father. Walter is always at major city events signing autographs and is always so active despite his old age. I know just looking at this that I am proud to be Canadian.

If Orr had played a full career then I would probably would have to call him the greatest of all-time. However, I would rather 20 elite seasons of Gretzky then 9 elite seasons of Orr.

Keep in mind that Orr had 915 points in 657 games which equated to 1.39 points per game while Gretzky had 2857 points in 1487 games which was 1.92 points per game. So if Orr played exactly the same amount of games as Gretzky, Orr would still be 800 POINTS BEHIND Gretzky. Yes thats not a typo, 800 points. Is that ridiculous or what? Most NHL players dont score 800 points in their entire careers and thats what Orr would be behind if he played the same amount of games.

However, you have to remember that you are comparing PPG between a forward and a defenseman. Of course Orr wasn't going to collect as many points as Gretzky. Just the fact that a defenseman has a 1.39 points per game and two Art Ross trophies, while being the best player defensively

I wish I could have seen Orr play everyday, Im young enough to have missed 75% of Gretzky's career but at least while Gretzky played a lot of his games were taped so we get to see most if not all of his career. Like you said, its hard enough to compare two players that play different positions. Then throw in the fact that they are from two different era's it makes it almost impossible to compare them.

My hometown of Brisbane, Australia will never have a competitive hockey team compared to Canada, America. My last sight of Wayne was at the Madison Square Garden with the Rangers, thanks for the great memories.

There are strong cases for a number of various players that are in the various halls of fame. However, when it comes to hockey there is no discussion. The best ever is Wayne Gretzky. Most of the records that he holds (all 61 of them!) the person who is second to him in most of those categories is not even close.

He was amazing to see in person. Living in an Eastern Conference City, I got to see him only once a year, but it was amazing when you did. the other players in Edmonton: Kurri, Coofey, Anderson, Fuhr, Lowe Moog, etc. It was an amazing team.

I love Bobby Orr, and I like him much better then I do Gretzky, I am deffinately not a Gretzky fan. Its a very hard sell though to say Orr is better then Gretzky. The fact that they played completely different positions also makes it difficult to compare the two. While I do agree with you that points are not everything, they still do mean a great deal though because they represent how many goals you help your team achive. As we all know, the team with the most goals wins.

Just to confirm for you that I am not a gretzky fan, I grew up in Chicago and then moved to Arizona and got to watch from 2006 to 2009 as Gretzky stole money from the Coyotes as he was the highest paid coach in all of the NHL and put out one of the worst teams in the NHL. He was so bad for the Coyotes that by himself he almost caused them to have to leave Az. The first year he leaves the Coyotes make the playoffs and it looks like the team is staying in Az, I hate Gretzky.

When you look at history of the NHL total points Gretzky is first by over 1000 points over the next 3 guys and they each played 300 games more then Gretzky. When you look at carrer goals, Gretzky is first and Orr isnt in the top 70. Career assist Gretzky is first and Orr is 59th. Career points Gretzky is first and Orr isnt in the top 70. The numbers are just too uneven for me to give Orr the nod. It looks like we will just have to agree to disagree lol.

With that being said, both were incredibly dominant, but Gretzky was able to do it for much longer. You don't get rewarded for games you don't play and unfortunately for hockey fans, Orr's career was cut short.

Go compare videos. Orr was/is recognized as being the best skater of all time, one of the best stick handlers, one of the best shots. The best defensive player in history, the best at controlling a hockey game. By far the best +/- a game 1.001 a game vs Gretzky's .35. By far the best gf-ga per game with a 1.46 vs Gretzky's 4th place .83. So..Orr crushes "the great one end of the ice" in many stats. When on the ice Orr simply ruled all 3 zones..99 ruled one zone. 99 = 2285 ga while on the ice.

i can't change your opinion on thinking orr was better than gretzky but i can guarantee that orr wasn't better at EVERY ASPECT IN HOCKEY that some of these guys have been saying. No matter what you say, orr was never a better goal scorer than gretzky and don't say he was.
