Originally, Near and Mello were supposed to be te sons of L but the creators decided to change this for some reason. They just kept the two as successors of L. I liked the idea though, because it's easy to associate those two with L..like Near's looks and Mello's obsession with chocolate (which is meant to be the main candy.) So, you're not very far off with that thought^^
