there are independent wrenches for each mod and you need to power a wood pipe with an engine (redstone,steam or combustion) you need an engine to power almost anything in build craft

1-you can break a engine with a pickaxe. it will come back.

2-you will need a Buildcraft wrench to change the engine output.

3- a IC miner mines better than a mining well, because it has a 5x5 or 9x9 area and you can use your solar panels to power them.

4-to extract something from the wooden pipe you need a engine, but the bets is the redstone one, because it doesnt need fuel.

Careful with steam engines, they will explode if you leave them running for no reason i.e. A quarry that has hit bedrock but the steam engine is still generating power. Unused energy is stored in the engine until it turns red. At that point it will overload and explode if you don't switch off the redstone.
