hello ! i am building a 5 m foam glider and i don't know yet wich is the best solution for binding 4 half wings together... cause i want to be able to transport them inside my car ... i' m thinking at a carbon rod into one side and carbon pipe at the other and a screw on top but that doesn 't look too good! can you think at something else? please let me know!
Cool concept. After watching, I could see how this could save a few grams in tape weight. And unlike the traditional tape hinge it should never let go like the tape will eventually do.
@Baron30s your fine should work ok EPP and hot glue work great together just practice on some scrape pieces first you will see how long you have to work with it its a simple process to learn just practice a few times.
Could you not just cut a groove i the foam and bend the foam itself? i.e. in a 10mm piece of foam, cut a groove to a depth of 8mm and then have a 2mm epp foam hinge?
@sailorkid13 scotch tape doesn't stick to epp foam. strapping tape does, but it is overkill and heavy. blenderm tape sticks, but is expensive and only lasts a season. hot glue is cheap, light and strong.
Thanks for posting this nice tip, Robert. Where is your favorite place to get epp foam? I've used mostly depron and may want to try some epp. Thanks again. - Ed
why not just use strapping tape? Seems less messy and I think I would trust is a little more. hot glue will stop holding over time, no? I never tried it so I really don't know.
I do the same but without the tape, just one long hinge, they do work great, that is what I used on my SuperFly and MegaFly and I've yet to have any issues over 2 years on the Superfly.
i have tried this and yes its very strong, the only problem is hot glue is heavy so i rather use light weight hinges, plus this is for a light weight plane, will nto work for heavy and fast planes, but good video, thanks :L)
Can you paint on top of the glue?

@dorinel1983 carbon should work ok! I have seen people use rare earth magnets also to hold stuff together
check do a search for Videos on the EZ-Star jet upgrades some good information there.

WElders is the same but it takes like 24h to dry.

Nice vid.

Great video, and an exception to the "light, strong, cheap; pick any two" law. Well done.

Hate the sound of foam...gggrrrrrrrr drives me nuts!!! LOL

You want to peel the length wise tape AWAY from the glue not towards it!

I have been flying with the welders glue hinge for the last year, cold weather and hot it does a great job and you don't leave gaps.

Do you use your hot glue gun on high or low settings for these hinges?
maliciousmushroom 1 year ago
@maliciousmushroom I buy the low temp hot glue sticks that they sell at Michaels Craft store.

@esobofh I have seen it done with good results thin epp rips easy though.

is the glue really hot
GOHAIMIN 2 years ago
this is overly complicated and takes too much time, just use scotch tape
sailorkid13 2 years ago
Remember this is just one method! use what works for you the Best!

Strapping tape works great, the only problem I have is that here in San Diego when its a little warm the tape seems to want to come lose with time.

Any reason on using Hotglue over Welders Glue? I've had great luck with Welders glue hinges as well...
mattklein623 2 years ago
Having a hard time finding Welders so I thought I would take a little step back and show a method that can be used.

I use POR glue for epp its superb just run a small bead either edge and bring together for a super wealded edge that holds forever strong .. steve

Cool I use these and these only but most of the time they arnt very organised and are in different spots and stuff.

great idea.
question, how long does it last, I thought hot glue will get hard and will eventually break after being bent/stressed ?
h2oreactor 2 years ago
I have had a hinge on another plane over a year and it's still holden strong.
tallguysd 2 years ago
HA! Never thought of taping it up and just gluing small sections. I'll try that tomorrow on my latest.
