@Hikkairu - Mostly debt and past criminal activity. I'm not too familiar with how cryptos get their security clearance, but for me since i have no criminal record and a lot of debt, I had to list that I was making payments in good faith on my debts, which took me a couple of months to track everyone down to begin payments and to build up a history of making payments on time and stuff.
I graduated in June this year, but I went to meps for the Navy in March. My ship out date is Nov. 22. The best way that I can think of for you to impress your recruiter is to score well on the ASVAB. I got an 89 so after I made it through the MEPS physical (and yes most of the horror stories are true) they sat me down and basically let me chose my career field and job without any limitations. In short, if you want a good job STUDY for the ASVAB, and be good in math.
@AndySan In comparison to other rates, the advancement is pretty good, but we're overmanned as fuck, I would guess about 75% of the people showing up at Dam Neck for A school are NATs. There are barely any active duty billets available for the IS rating, and they closed it off to PTS sailors.
im 17 a senior went my local recruiter for a sit down we talked i took a practice asvab scored a 19 but i took an official asvab at school a few months before and scored a 36 i am currently working on memorizing the ranks, salors creed, general orders, and chain of command i not fat but not skinny either im around 5'9 195lbs 24% BMI no record no tats perfect health i do wear glasses yet he still seem a little unimpressed what is the best way to get him to give me contract and let me go to meps
Thanks for the video..im joining the navy and ive really looked hard at nuke.. (my brother is a elt nuke on subs).. my asvab score is in the 80's..but ive been told you have to get in the middle to upper 90's for this rate.. ive also been looking at IT, IS rates.. those seem more of my style (i get alot of push my brother about going nuke).. with a asvab score in the 80's.. would i qualify for these rates? i ask b/c i really hate my recruiter...lol..
@Jnewman161616 - Although every situation may be different, this other guy and I were able to take the nuke test and we scored low-to-mid 80s on the ASVAB (I got an 83, and it was my first try with no studying and being out of high school for 6 years and college for 3 years).
Hope you're good at really complicated math cuz that's most of the nuke test (I don't remember specifics though). I still scored a 48 (50 and up is passing) so I wasn't qualified for the nuke program. Good luck though!!

if I paint ships or work in intel...in the 1st and 15th I get me and I have a since of placing my blocks together to build a career. Thanks for the heads up. You're obviously a "stand up guy". March 16, 2011 is around the corner. Life is about taking chances and i cant lose no matter which route I go. Last thing I notice about all the current/retired undes sailors is that they all had one thing in common....all had stayed in for multiple years after being undes...so it can't be too bad.
AndySan valid point...I called my recruiter today and told him it's a possibility that I might be getting out my DEP contract (undes) and retake the asvab Tuesday. Andy, I really feel like they are going to offer me some bs job(s) like CS, BM, etc. (No Offense to those who r and/or looking to be). I was calculating my scored for possible rates and I really need/feel like I can do much better. What do you suggest?
@AlphaBenson - I would recommend asking yourself the following question: "Why am I joining the Navy?" Are you looking to go back to college? Is it impossible to find a job out there? Do you need some discipline in your life?
Once you have the answer, then look up rates that match up to your interests. Keep this in mind: it doesn't matter if one rate promotes faster than another; what matters is how much will you enjoy doing your job for the next 4-8 years. Think about it!
I feel u...but all require a top security clearance which I don't think they'll give me. B/c I had a credit card go to collections for $800...I heard your "everything" has to be perfect in order to get top secret...i hate to sound so desperate but I'm open to any rate except Seabee and BM...just hope they give me something good Monday with a ship date in march. They submitted a request for a ship date before April 16, 2011...does this request give considered...or r they just gas'n me up?
@AlphaBenson - I'm not too sure on something like that. I know that they do often go through requests like that because lots of people coming into the military nowadays carry some kind of debt with them, whether it's student loans or a little credit card bill.
As long as you get a waiver for all that, you should be fine until you get ready to start A-School. That is when they will look to see if you've either paid off your debts or are working to pay them off.
. As far as the rates that were offered to me yesterday were not so much "offer to me" just rates that are open at the moment. Intel, engineer, and cryto...but they (recruiters) told me my scores (line scores I assume) were above average and that they have me something. It's sucks b/c now it's either bite on whatever they offer or go in undes...I feel like insect in a spider web hovering over an ant hill lol (don't know where that analogy came from)
@AlphaBenson - Man, all of those rates sound good! It'll be hard work getting through school and all, but I think that you'll do fine with either rate. Just study up on them and pick which one fits you best. As one of my RDCs said, "Choose your rate, choose your fate" !
Thanks Andy. That video/question you just replied to was mine. Well, as an update...I did return to meps Jan. 3rd, 2011 and ended up with an undesignated rate (I know...I know). I was yearning to leave my current job as well as "cookie cutter town in SC) that I went for anything. They told me that they didn't have any jobs (for me) and the only/earliest thing out was that undesignated seaman. Now (feb. 2, 2011) the recruiter(s) told me that they have a rate and ship date for me...they're ju
Hopefully, you get out of that undes business. Some people don't mind it because you get out to the fleet quicker and you learn a little bit of everything until you "strike" for a rate. However, they make you do a TON of grunt work.
So what's the rate that your recruiter had for you?
when i went to meps they told me the rate i wanted (Aircrew) wasnt opened, but when i refused to take the rates they offered me it magically became available 5 minutes later.
@KESTAPHOR - Your MEPS must have been better than mine cuz after enduring HOURS of mind-numbing Sports Center, they just had STG that day.
Don't get me wrong, I'm more than grateful for the rate and everything; but to be honest, I got extremely lucky. I had no clue what I was signing up for and I could have been royally screwed, but thankfully I wasn't, so I'm glad!
I meet with a recruiter for the Navy on the 7th, but i still have the rest of my junior year and senior year of highschool to go. Any advise on how to get through school when you hate it and just want to go to the Navy.
@anthonybigdawgs well keep in mind you can't go to the Navy if you don't graduate highschool. I hated highschool when I was there but now I kinda miss it.
@anthonybigdawgs - I agree with maniacchris, but if you'd still like to get your feet wet with the Navy life, have you thought about joining JROTC? You'll get promoted when you join the Navy (up to E-3) and it'll help you out with marching and all that fun stuff. Definitely check that out!
Shipping in 2 weeks for CTI. Trying desperately to keep a student loan out of default.
What other things can fuck up my getting this rating? All of my immediate family are us citizens and none criminals.

do you know what the advancement rate is for IS?
NegativeNick 10 months ago
@NegativeNick - Pretty good according to the latest CREO levels: usmilitary.about.com/od/navy/a/creolist2.htm.
I wonder if it's because you need a Top Secret clearance, which is kinda hard to get from what I've heard.
