  • your car is going rich from unmetered air from the bov. this is a maf sensor car so without a recurculation valve your going extra rich as soon as you hear your turbo noisemaker. it will also wash the cylinders down with gas and that leads to a faster wearing engine and fouled spark plugs. as much as i love a blow off valve, I wont run one on a maf car. if you have launch control you can make almost anything shoot flames with the right exhaust

  • @Eriic9104 The turbo produces the heat which the unburnt fuel gets burned... You dont have to be running rich to spit fire though... theres always unburnt fuel but the heat of the turbo will bring out the flame of the unburnt fuel no matter what!

    However, the BOV being setup like that will cause it to run rich as a pig whenever he lets off. it's blowing out metered air away from the intake, so all that fuel's getting dumped in without the proper a/f ratio.

  • Unburnt hydrocarbons (Gas) running out of the back. It's igniting (obviously, lol). One of the catalytic converter's jobs is to catch that mess before it hits the atmosphere. He must not have one equipped; I don't mind hahaha.

  • @BlueAngelWRX I don't get it; if it's not to much fuel (rich) then why would he need a recirculating BOV? With it venting to the atmosphere, that's LESS air and more fuel in that situation. And map correction would indeed take care of that, but I don't get what you mean exactly. His A/F ratio is probably fine, I meant just dealin' with the BOV situation; not driving around in general.

  • Well you have to look at it this way: Air and Fuel correction are tied to the RPM band.. The car is tuned for the extra power of the turbo.. So when the BOV opens, it's not adding more fuel, the fuel remains constant because of the tune.. The air is discharging completely from the BOV.. So, in essence the car is RICH due to that, but it is not richening out through the tune itself. So -- It's not adding fuel, it's merely losing air.. If that makes any sense lol. =)

  • Yes. for turbo vehicles a BOV is a complete and utterly dire necessity. When the turbine compresses the air, it adds power to the engine.. When the throttle releases, the engine no longer needs the boost to generate the power.. so the BOV is used to relieve the compressed air, which in turn prevents your engine from going boom lol. But, the most efficient blow off valve is a recirculating.. that way the MAF sensor can remain stable and not resort in the car sputtering and choking. (In most cases

  • The flames are from the open dump blow off valve. The car is metering air that is no longer there when it comes time for the fuel to be mixed, so too much fuel is dumped.

  • @quadracer111 - i'm not talking about boost pressure exiting the system. Im on about exhaust gases being released. Overfuelling has nothing to do with a valve attached onto an intercooler system. you can be running compressor surge and still get the flames due to running rich or over-fuelling.

    Cars with a MAF require a recirculating BOV or else they will run rich in between shifts and when you let off the gas. The MAF meters the air telling the engine to expect it, so the computer dumps more fuel into the engine for this air, however this air never makes it to the engine because it was vented to the atmosphere, causing a rich condition. If you have a MAF with a vta BOV you need to get it tuned to accommodate this,or live with the rich condition

  • ignition cut limiter, not timer. Anyway its a rev limiter that intermittently cuts ignition to the engine when you hit the targeted rpm limit. but because the injectors are still pulsing, fuel vapor builds up in the exhaust, when the fuel in the exhaust ignites, a loud pop and flame results.

  • the higher the rev, the more dense the exhaust gas will be. its common sense, its burning more fuel. and fuel mixtures can vary, aswell as exhaust setups.

    When you let off the gas there is a split second where the AIR/FUEl gets super rich because he has an atmosphere dump on the SSQV. You will see less smoke with a resirculate but it will still smoke because it is getting less air from the turbo spooling down and the injectors still giving more fuel.

  • @paganizondadude your only half right. the atmosphereic dump causes the A/F ratio to go very rich but its because the ecu metered in more air than the motor receives hence the rich A/F ratio. with the bov set to full recirc the pressure that is released is recirculated back into the air tract after the maf sensor so all the air that was metered in is used.
