Thom in Scotland. born free a witness.

  • There have been 300 wars since WW! and 200 million killed! Donovan is right. This is not a way to put an end to war.

  • Donovan always reminded me of Dylan.

  • when did he record this? anyone know?

  • @GreatFangirlMizu In 1965; a US no. 53 hit. You'll find it at allmusic.com/artist/donovan-p4117/charts-awards/billboard-singles

  • @GreatFangirlMizu Just checked: the link doesn't seem to work for me. Type in "AllMusic.com", then search "Donovan" and "Charts & awards" and "Billboard singles" for all his US hits. There were 16 from 1965 to 1973.

  • Didn't know it was Buffie -- but on reflection can see that it is-brilliant anyway-thanks to whoever

  • wow - great protest song. had not heard not heard this one

  • real music

  • for you Ishbel where ever you are in the Summerlands, x

  • only chuck norris can dislike a song about peace.

  • @bubblegum0912 Rightness.

  • @bubblegum0912 I tried it and i could dislike it so doesn't work that way.

  • @bubblegum0912 duke nukem is real

  • @bubblegum0912 This might mean I am stupid, but I don't get the chuck Norris reference. Are you saying that making marshal arts movies means your anti peace? If so, I disagree.

  • @cwcwful i understand lol its just a joke about chuck norris cause he is, well i can't put it any other way, slimply badass lol

  • @bubblegum0912 yeah well there is only 1 chuck norris, explain that!

  • i like this song :3

  • My S.S teacher showed this the other day it's been stuck in my head ever since then! :P

  • @Dasiyssis This is a long shot, but did you have Mrs. Skinner?

  • @tallguy1618 Sadly no... :P

  • Hurdy Gurdy Man

  • Yes actually Buffy St. Marie wrote his song not Dylan. Just saying. And it's one of those songs that was meant to be played and song by as many people as have voices and/or an instrument such as guitar. There's a message in the song, and it's one for the whole world to hear. World peace now. Also please don't hate war- war is often founded on hate so its not productive to hate, well, anything. Disagree with it. Be against it. But never hate. Love, yeah? :) <3

  • @yoginipeacelove Sorry, but war is the natural selection process of the human race. There's always going to be war. If you're not ready for war or to defend against someone commiting war then your country and people will fall and be enslaved.

The Islam invasion of the West is a great example of why war is a necessary to protect one's freedom and live in PEACE.

  • @yoginipeacelove I served for 32 years and was wounded twice, now in a wheel chair at only 53, so who is going to keep the peace??? people like me and my father and grandfathder, both badly wounded, my son has just come back from Ops in Afganistan, thankfully in one peice but will go again as does my 15 year old son who wishes to join the medics like his father. Do you want another terrorist bombing or the use of dirty bombs/// Get real and come into the real world.

  • @961archie u need to get real pal, im not saying you and you're family havent sacrificed alot for what you were lead to believe was the "right thing" but look at life objecively, wars and people have been manipulated from the begining of time, just because you decided to follow your family history and jump in to murdering people you've been told are bad for the sake of nothing more than naked profiteering, makes you a fool, you were unwilling to question you're orders, a soldier indeed......

  • @961archie

God Bless you and your family, and I am extremley proud of our soldiers. But the wars we are in are no longer justified. We have Usama dead, so its not longer worth fighting in Afghanistan unless the goal is only to loose more men and see more dead. May I suggest that you consider looking into what Ron Paul says about war? It makes sense. Thanks for your service :) God Bless.

  • @961archie i thank guys like you for our fredom

  • @961archie From one combat Vet to another, Archie: You've got it wrong. Donovan's got it right. I hope you find Jesus, I'll pray for you.

  • @961archie I respect everyone who has fought for my right to say that war is the easiest way to get what you want. War heroes are heroes, dont get me wrong. However, I think that the person who brings about world peace WITH peace will earn much more respect than the ones who fought for peace. funny. fighting for peace is an oxymoron

  • @yoginipeacelove haha i love you

  • @yoginipeacelove but, to be fair, it could just as well be written by dylan; they both have the sam feel to it

  • Important song. What have we learned? Peace now. War is not the answer.

  • Way to short.

  • I adore this song, and I adore Donovan.

  • Screw most of the modern crap we have today. I'll take this music!

  • "How would Hitler have condemned him at Labau?"

    What does Labau mean?

As far as I know Buffy Saint-Marie sings "Dachau". But Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp opened in Germany, and meaning of song is very clear. Labau was german names for some czech villages, and there are no signs of death camp.

  • @jaricleiv Liebau was the German name for the Polish town of Lubawka. During the war, Lubawka was the site of a training centre for the Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth). There was also a labour camp situated in the vicinity.

  • @Goodmanschoices Thank you for answer. But I wonder this town is so important to mention it in song.

  • @jaricleiv Not sure. Buffy Sainte Marie wrote the original and she uses "Dachau". I've even seen one interpretation where it's Lwow (Lviv) but not even an American would pronounce that to rhyme with "cow".

  • No argument about Bob Dylan's lyrics, he is a brilliant songwriter. However how about some credit for Buffy St Marie, who wrote this particular song!

The point of the song seems hating war. No one can dispute the bravery of soldiers and that they have saved countries facing devastating situations. Often people who speak more against war than any others are career soldiers, because they have seen the reality. As long as human nature exists, I think wars will continue.

  • @Belj100 One of the most sensible comments ever, what you said is true

In my view, we need a standing army - why - to allow you to say what you want, do what you want without fear of being arrested for it - and yes, human nature causes wars - I could dare say, tribal or even animal nature

  • you did not answer your own question. US solders are heros. Thank you for fighting for our values. freedom........

  • Molto bella!

  • thats right 0 dislikes

  • I love this song

  • fantastic quality upload - thanks so much!!!

one of the finest songs you will ever here.

  • Such nice lyrics :O

  • i love this song<3(L)

  • Putting aside any debate about the song's lyrics/message, it's not a bad piece of music, but the change from 4/4 to 3/4 waltz tempo at the end is a stroke of genius; that and ending on a minor chord give the ending a real feeling of gravitas.

  • @jakollee see to me it doesnt overly feel like an ending

  • If only Dylan would learn to sing. Cannot believe that there is any one that ever listened to Dylan.

  • @SubHawk Fucking idiot.

  • @GoldenGhettoFilms he's right though but bob's still amazin. id listen to him even if his voice was as bad biebers

  • @SubHawk ; Bob Dylan may not be the world's greatest singer or even rank ver highly in that respect, but is just about the finest lyricist ever, with Sprinsteen a close second. Who wants to listen to crappy kiddie pop lyrics like those churned out by the Beatles, etc., when you've got songs with meaning? As a song writer, Dyland rules.

  • @this0033 if you like them checkout the late, great, harry chapin

  • lol donovan.. great song though, to bad he lived in dylans shadow he might of been able to make more of an impact if he weren't such a joke

  • nice vid
