I have an old 2 cycle model and have used it for over ten years. It got its first overhaul this season. I have clay soil full of roots and it certainly gives a workout, but I find it to be a pleasant one. Once you understand how it functions best (pulling backwards for the initial digging, and rocking slightly, it's perfect for all of my gardening and weeding needs.
This year I went in tight circles for my tomatoes. Watering is a simple matter of filling the depression around the plant.
I brought the 4 cycle mentis tiller, I was disappointed with it and send it back your shoulders and back in pain for a week, it just do the top of the soil its better to dig.
I have been using one season after season for years and love it, never had pains. If you use a rototiller, operate it as you would a lawnmower. In other words, keep your body upright without leaning forwards to push or backwards to pull. Walk reasonably close to the tiller, and keep your upper arms relatively near your torso. I don't think the pain you've got was from using a Mantis tiller, they are super light weigh but the way you positioned yourself when using it :)
so it goes through sod and compact dirt pretty well? is it nice and reliable? should i get the 2 cycle or the 4 cycle tiller? im thinking of getting a mantis tiller but need to know if it will get the job done
Buy the 4 -cycle, it will leave the Echo in the DUST! Not only is it easy to start, tons of power, HONDA Engine, no oil to mix. There is no better small tiller on the market. If you Buy direct from them they have a strong warranty and guarentees, they stand behind their product, if you buy from Amazon and others the deal is different so beware and do your homework. The 4 stroke will cost more than a 2 cycle but it is a Honda engine and you get what you pay for!!
Strong my butt. The needle bearing are completely gone on the rod where it connects to the crank.
It very well could have been a defective engine but Mantis is not going to warranty it and so it was $400.00 for nothing. Read your warranty closely since there is some "fine print" that does not warranty the things that actually break..
It feels like I bought a garden tool from a crooked lawer.
My engine seized after three gallons of gas worth of tilling. The tiller is four years old and we were given a 5 year warranty. The company will not honor the warranty.
This company and product are scum and junk. file a complaint with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General - Tom Corbett if you have also had this experience.
If you don't own one, don't buy one. The new crankshaft is over $160.00. That is $600.00 to use a toy tiller for a total of 8 hours. JUNK and crooks!
Had an imitation at Fedco like 27 years ago, it was slow compared to the Mantis, gave it to a neighbor who was not impressed. Now my mom bought a broken 1995 one for $20. Accidentally replaced the coil and rebuilt the carburator and components, new gas tank. Silcone seal airfilter. Runs fast compared to the imitation. Starts with a half pull. It's lightness is right for bouncing off of rocks as apposed to bending your tines. Tines stopped for 12v electrical wires. Broke sprinkler thin lines
have a Mantis tiller, coil pack went out,so I used a electronic "lawnmower coil" (mini) works fine.

Buy the Echo two stroke.
It runs faster, digs faster and is lighter

I have an Echo and it has run flawless for 5 years now.
Exact same tiller as the Mantis except the Mantis may get substandard or rejected engines from Echo.

Sounds like you used straight gasoline and not a 2-cycle mixture.
