The 60's rock era will be forever superior. I am only 47 but remember a pretty fair amount from 1966 on. If a little kid thinks it's great in an uncanny way and it sticks for life it must be the real deal. 60's forever.
Too bad the video didn't continue to the "interview". Dick walked up like he always did and askedRoky, "who's the head?".
He didn't miss a beat and answered, "we're all heads.."
Priceless. Saw them many times in Tx whilst growing up. My little hs band played on the same bill at the Amer. Legion Hall in Bryan. Obviously most in the audience had no idea and seemed befuddled; sparse applause only. One guy came up 2 me and said, "why are these guys here?" I just looked at him and had nothing 2 say
I saw an interview of Roky on Youtube, which was a very recent interview of him. He was very cheerful, and is still performing. It is nice that is brother is helping him now.
Excellent video; Roky Erickson is a 'Twilight Zone' Buddy Holly who played mutant surf-punk in a band which looked like a bunch of authentic no-goods.
This is a long shot but: if Roky his self or anyone that knows Roky should happen to read this, I'd like for him to check out a YouTube video of a guy that he should remember. As I understand he is a lost friend of yours Roky. Check it out if you want to get in contact with him I can now help with that, Message me on here (YouTube) about him. Click my user name to understand what I'm talking about.
Wikipedia has a good bio on these guys. They all are pretty much dead, the singer spent time in the asylum. One gunshot death and the rest is herion. Great music. Love the intense insane look on the bassist.
That goddamned jug! I spent years trying to figure out that "guitar effect" not knowing it was a fricken jug! And I was trying string stretching with a tremolo pedal and everything else and it just wasn't the same! A fracken jug!!! Sheeeit!
Yeah, and Jack Black reportedly turned it down because he feared the role was just too much for him to handle....or so that was the claim by Roky and his brother Sumner in an interview which was conducted with them a couple years back for the UK's "The Guardian" newspaper/magazine or whatever.
Just saw Roky at the El Rey Theatre in L.A. I wish he had broken out his harmonica for this, but he didn't. Still, it was a good show. He finished the set with Reverberation, which was great.
I actually hate the harmonica too! I think the harmonica ruins a lot of good songs. I like this song's beat and the opening is awesome and the guitar at the end is amazing.
That sound of the jug really intrigued me when I first heard this song. Like how'd they do that. The song is fantastic, one of my all time favorites. To me the jug sounds like the flapping wings of some strange, huge bird which adds to the power of the song. Too much.
true. he started to babble (tripping?) at a gig & 'they' diagnosed him with schizophrenia. he got electroshock 'treatments' & was later on busted for possession of 1 (yes, one) spliff. his choice was either a decade in the clink or time 'convalescing' in a mental institution. so he pled insanity & spent the next 3 years getting doped up with antipsychotic drugs & jolted again in a state hospital.
I heard them while listening outside of a club in Port Aransas,Tx. I couldn't get in because I didn't have enough money or I was too young (I can't remember which}.
I never saw any video of them. This rocks so hard. That dude playing the jug is really coming up with some strange sounds... didn't know that was a jug! I had this album when I was a kid; my uncle gave it to me cause i think he didn't like it or something; listened to it all the time.
I had my dishwasher on while this video was playing and I didn't realize the dishwasher was playing the song 20 minutes after the video stopped, I didn't realize.
Stacy was a good friend of my uncle Butch (Carlton White) and they hung out alot back in the day when Butch lived in a little box trailer at the cementary and drew weird pictures on the wall where the people inside the earth live. Way too much LSD , but a whole lot of talent, some of t he best talent on this planet had.
The ultimate 60's garage/psychedelic band. Great to see the Elevators on the telly even if they are miming. God bless you for putting it on. They went on to produce "Easter Everywhere", arguably the greatest psychedelic album ever made.
Roky Rules ...man this is my favorite garage rock tune EVER..I can`t get enough.Pure and Raw Rock at his primitive source.Back in 60`s..we had more soul and mind...nowadays it`s all garbage..except few bands. But the Energy is gone..pearls like this or Hendrix..never more, Thank you for posting this. Im gonna watch again...for the 1001th time ;)
Tommy Hall "played" the jug in the 13th Floor Elevators. Actually, he just used it as an echo chamber and voiced the "booglie" riffs himself. Very clever stuff.
This performance by the Elevators was definitely lip-synched, as that is the way almost all TV shows in that day presented rock music. They simply didn't have the remix equipment on hand for true sound, nor would it have worked well in a cavernous TV studio. They were, however, an incredible band and I saw them live maybe a dozen times.
Help! I cannot stop watching this video! Roky's voice and those screams are unbelievable...what an incredible talent. Glad he's being appreciated again.
First time I heard this.,,I couldn`t believe the pulse and raw force energy that lay in Roky performance...It shivers inside..the best!!! I cant stop listening this and watching wow...been searching for this along with Downliners Sect.thx for posting.

yeah texas had a couple of mildly talented musicians back then,a few average, so-so performers ,didnt make much impact, names like buddy holly, roy head, roy orbison, doug sahm, bobby fuller, roky erickson, sam the sham....
Its all about the jug you jugheads and making great rock and roll...Janis Joplin's former and really brief backup group on the way out of scumbag lychin-ville Texass in 1966 on the way to the green pleasures of SF and the ballrooms, god I love these rockin TX guys...way ahead of ALL the heads...Roky is that moonshine or pappy squeezins in there boy?
Ah, so this is the Roky who is often compared with Roger (Syd) and Alex (Skip)? Good song, and he's definitely got an edge. I'd have to hear more to see if he's as singular as Rog and Al, or Arthurly.
Well, Roky was pretty together in this era. If you want to hear a good sampling of his post-breakdown stuff, find "Never Say Goodbye" or his box set. The problem is that Roky never put out a full album as solid as Oar or Forever Changes (or even Four Sail), but he left gems scattered all over the place.
The best thing from TX evah...friend of Joplin and former back up group...too cool for Austin circa 1966, spent most of their time like Janis playing at the Fillmore West, Avalon etc. where they were finally appreciated, even made ABS with the DICK, we love you Roky and juggy
I have 2 Elevators posters....one i got from a guy from back then that was on his wall originally and then under his bed with others from other bands that had been under that bed since probably 1970. The other one I got is a reprint I got from John Ike about 10 years ago.
