  • The 60's rock era will be forever superior. I am only 47 but remember a pretty fair amount from 1966 on. If a little kid thinks it's great in an uncanny way and it sticks for life it must be the real deal. 60's forever.

  • has to be thier most fun song - cool in many possible ways...

  • GOTTA GET ME ONE OF THOSE INVISIBLE HARMONICA'S !

  • Janis Joplin screaming vocals but before Janis.

  • Too bad the video didn't continue to the "interview". Dick walked up like he always did and askedRoky, "who's the head?".

He didn't miss a beat and answered, "we're all heads.."

Priceless. Saw them many times in Tx whilst growing up. My little hs band played on the same bill at the Amer. Legion Hall in Bryan. Obviously most in the audience had no idea and seemed befuddled; sparse applause only. One guy came up 2 me and said, "why are these guys here?" I just looked at him and had nothing 2 say

  • WE LIVING ON LSD

  • The jug? That is one of the main parts of the song! And their other songs.

  • I saw an interview of Roky on Youtube, which was a very recent interview of him. He was very cheerful, and is still performing. It is nice that is brother is helping him now.

  • THE BLACK ANGELS

  • One of the best 60's garage tracks of all time

  • Saw them many times in my younger days.aaaahhhhhyessss!

  • brilliant track!

  • Roky Rocks! Need more "Jug"

  • These guys were so ahead of their time minus the jug.

  • I can hear the producer : ' What we need is more jug '.

  • Excellent video; Roky Erickson is a 'Twilight Zone' Buddy Holly who played mutant surf-punk in a band which looked like a bunch of authentic no-goods.

  • Long live music of the sixties!!

  • Is this the invention of the beat box?

  • dude playing a jug...sounds spooky. luv this song.

  • i hope roky still does this song

  • THIS is briliant!

  • check my reworked version out if you would like a high def audio/video treat ;)

keep up the good work beyond the beat G

  • Wow his hand sounds like a harmonica it's crazy, amazing

  • Good documentary about Roky "You're Gonna Miss Me" sad though

  • Okay I was wrong, but damn what a kid!

  • i can see the mistake he dont look anything like this anymore

  • It's NOT Roky singing, this is real early stuff!

  • It is Roky singing. I can see that you're a real fan.

  • Great band. check out Lobelia Sound?

  • This is brilliant.

  • This IS brilliant!

  • Wikipedia has a good bio on these guys. They all are pretty much dead, the singer spent time in the asylum. One gunshot death and the rest is herion. Great music. Love the intense insane look on the bassist.

  • This is damn good. These guys just played how they felt...great stuff.

  • Gracias, joya del garage punk psicodelico, que gran banda, esto es arte.

  • Fuck the jug. This is good shit!

  • At one point or another every member of the band spent time in an insane asylum?

I'm wondering what EXACTLY was in that jug to begin with....

  • great video!!

  • That goddamned jug! I spent years trying to figure out that "guitar effect" not knowing it was a fricken jug! And I was trying string stretching with a tremolo pedal and everything else and it just wasn't the same! A fracken jug!!! Sheeeit!

  • Sorry for laughing but that's a great story. Five stars for the song AND your super anecdote.

  • watching this reminded me i heard a rumour a couple of years ago about jack black playing rocky in a film, anyone else hear that one?

  • Yeah, and Jack Black reportedly turned it down because he feared the role was just too much for him to handle....or so that was the claim by Roky and his brother Sumner in an interview which was conducted with them a couple years back for the UK's "The Guardian" newspaper/magazine or whatever.

  • this is your brain on Roky... okay?

  • One of the Top 10 songs of all fucking time!!!!!!

Just saw Roky at the El Rey Theatre in L.A. I wish he had broken out his harmonica for this, but he didn't. Still, it was a good show. He finished the set with Reverberation, which was great.

  • Get on mad Rokky!

  • Love that guitar work.

  • I hate the jug.

  • why?

  • I just think the sound it produces is stupid.

  • the jug sound is the best freaking sound on this thing. dayam they wanted electro but they got inventive haha

  • sugaraddict, you crack me up. you have to admit though, roky shreads on the harmonica.

  • I actually hate the harmonica too! I think the harmonica ruins a lot of good songs. I like this song's beat and the opening is awesome and the guitar at the end is amazing.

  • LOL Sugar Addict!

  • That sound of the jug really intrigued me when I first heard this song. Like how'd they do that. The song is fantastic, one of my all time favorites. To me the jug sounds like the flapping wings of some strange, huge bird which adds to the power of the song. Too much.

  • I didn't like the jug when I first heard it either. It's grown on me.

  • the jug rules!

  • Best part is getting the jug empty!!!!

  • great song! a jug player...lol!!

  • Bill Allen and the Backbeats' "Something To Remember Me By" got there first, but this is a nice B-side for that psychobilly classic.

  • He hasn't steered me wrong yet in music.

Wait, did you know of these guys ? Lucky.

  • Finally I have a vid to send to a friend.

This is made of epic win. I love it.

  • thx for sharing *g* I didnt know the double H likes good music :)

  • I saw them aropund 1968 in Sacramento Fair. They were great! I heard the lead singer flipped out and was later in a mental asylum

  • true. he started to babble (tripping?) at a gig & 'they' diagnosed him with schizophrenia. he got electroshock 'treatments' & was later on busted for possession of 1 (yes, one) spliff. his choice was either a decade in the clink or time 'convalescing' in a mental institution. so he pled insanity & spent the next 3 years getting doped up with antipsychotic drugs & jolted again in a state hospital.

  • Fantastic band, excellent song, also covered by DMZ.This is the REAL stuff!Thanx for this gem!

  • WOW this is fantastic

  • I heard them while listening outside of a club in Port Aransas,Tx. I couldn't get in because I didn't have enough money or I was too young (I can't remember which}.

  • I never saw any video of them. This rocks so hard. That dude playing the jug is really coming up with some strange sounds... didn't know that was a jug! I had this album when I was a kid; my uncle gave it to me cause i think he didn't like it or something; listened to it all the time.

  • I had my dishwasher on while this video was playing and I didn't realize the dishwasher was playing the song 20 minutes after the video stopped, I didn't realize.

  • Stacy Sutherland...the Dark angel. He was smokin man lol

  • Stacy was a good friend of my uncle Butch (Carlton White) and they hung out alot back in the day when Butch lived in a little box trailer at the cementary and drew weird pictures on the wall where the people inside the earth live. Way too much LSD , but a whole lot of talent, some of t he best talent on this planet had.

  • this is also done by Radio Birdman, and The Nomads.

  • In england we lead to beleive there's no elevators footage surviving thanks for posting. Roky does rule!

  • The greatest thing to hit the U of T outside of Farrah Fawcett.

  • absolutely F'n Amazing!

  • Roky Rule's

  • He played lastnight @ emos

    crazy

    man

  • great.

  • The ultimate 60's garage/psychedelic band. Great to see the Elevators on the telly even if they are miming. God bless you for putting it on. They went on to produce "Easter Everywhere", arguably the greatest psychedelic album ever made.

  • Really great to see this, never thought I'd get to see so thanks for uploading! They were a great group that should have been better known..

  • Roky Rules ...man this is my favorite garage rock tune EVER..I can`t get enough.Pure and Raw Rock at his primitive source.Back in 60`s..we had more soul and mind...nowadays it`s all garbage..except few bands. But the Energy is gone..pearls like this or Hendrix..never more, Thank you for posting this. Im gonna watch again...for the 1001th time ;)

  • rock n roll 101...get it...

  • Tommy Hall "played" the jug in the 13th Floor Elevators. Actually, he just used it as an echo chamber and voiced the "booglie" riffs himself. Very clever stuff.

  • This performance by the Elevators was definitely lip-synched, as that is the way almost all TV shows in that day presented rock music. They simply didn't have the remix equipment on hand for true sound, nor would it have worked well in a cavernous TV studio. They were, however, an incredible band and I saw them live maybe a dozen times.

  • Yeah it's exactly the same as the record.

I want one of those things though, anyone know what it's called?

  • i love this band so much! but sadly, it looks like they might be lip-sycning this...

  • someone give me a hit of blotter, quick!!!

  • I thought they were a 1 Hit Wonder,I guess they're A 2 Hit wonder,4 starz!

  • the name of the show is american bandstand hosted by dick clark.

  • whats the show this is off ?

there was a three piece chick band on after em

    what were they called ?

great clip even though they are miming ti,,,

  • Lord! what a find...Thank YOU!

  • we could never figure out what that weird noise was, we did not think oh, its a jug, lol

  • Roky!!

  • the documentary about roky erickson was great. 60's garage rock does rule!

  • just the greatist rock that turned on to a whole new way of life .LOng live the sixties

  • Oh My Isis!! Nothing better!!! x Jayne

  • Help! I cannot stop watching this video! Roky's voice and those screams are unbelievable...what an incredible talent. Glad he's being appreciated again.

  • I reckon it's put through an 'oscillator'.

  • GRAZIE!!!

  • yr such a loooooozer hollies65 andf ya live nowhere

  • Anybody knows about "Earthquake"(music title from Easter Everywherelbum) or another Elevators videos?

  • Love this song!

  • Garage rock at its best. Wonderful stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • First time I heard this.,,I couldn`t believe the pulse and raw force energy that lay in Roky performance...It shivers inside..the best!!! I cant stop listening this and watching wow...been searching for this along with Downliners Sect.thx for posting.

  • oh man! this so freakin' cool. vintage 60's

  • cool music

  • One of the most classic moments in Rock and Roll history:

Dick Clark: Who's the head of the band?

    Roky: We're all heads.

The other was when Elton John dressed up as a gorilla and scared Iggy Pop while he was dropping acid.

  • A Garage/Pop superclassic remake of The Spades original, this appeared on the first record to use the term "psychedelic" - The Psychedelic SOunds of the 13th Floor Elevators - get it on CD!

P.S. BeyondTheBeatGeneration is the BEST Garage internet radio station on the planet!

  • yeah texas had a couple of mildly talented musicians back then,a few average, so-so performers ,didnt make much impact, names like buddy holly, roy head, roy orbison, doug sahm, bobby fuller, roky erickson, sam the sham....

  • You got that right, Mark!

  • YOU FORGOT JANDEK !!!

  • Its all about the jug you jugheads and making great rock and roll...Janis Joplin's former and really brief backup group on the way out of scumbag lychin-ville Texass in 1966 on the way to the green pleasures of SF and the ballrooms, god I love these rockin TX guys...way ahead of ALL the heads...Roky is that moonshine or pappy squeezins in there boy?

  • i think it was tommy( on jug ) who said we're all heads, dick.

  • Yes, it was TOMMY who said that.

  • fabulosos, una de mis bandas favoritas.

  • Thanks so much for the posting. I had never heard of this band, or song, until I moved to TX in 74.

  • Ah, so this is the Roky who is often compared with Roger (Syd) and Alex (Skip)? Good song, and he's definitely got an edge. I'd have to hear more to see if he's as singular as Rog and Al, or Arthurly.

  • Well, Roky was pretty together in this era. If you want to hear a good sampling of his post-breakdown stuff, find "Never Say Goodbye" or his box set. The problem is that Roky never put out a full album as solid as Oar or Forever Changes (or even Four Sail), but he left gems scattered all over the place.

  • I dunno, I thought "The Evil One" and "All That May Do My Rhyme" were pretty solid efforts.

  • Great band Crazy shit Paris Hilton theme!!

  • The best thing from TX evah...friend of Joplin and former back up group...too cool for Austin circa 1966, spent most of their time like Janis playing at the Fillmore West, Avalon etc. where they were finally appreciated, even made ABS with the DICK, we love you Roky and juggy

  • one of the true greats

    hot enough

    weird enough

    mean enough

    real enough

to turn goat piss into gasoline

  • electric jug!

  • too bad the interview part is missing. dick clark asks roky "which one of you is the head?" and roky responds "we're all heads dick"

  • Amazing. Was this from American Bandstand? My friend has a 13th Floor Elevators gig poster that came from Dick Clark's personal collection.

  • Some years back I met Dick Clark shopping in Santa Monica and YES INDEED he's collected concert posters for YEARS now and is a BIG fan of this group!

  • I have 2 Elevators posters....one i got from a guy from back then that was on his wall originally and then under his bed with others from other bands that had been under that bed since probably 1970. The other one I got is a reprint I got from John Ike about 10 years ago.

  • Roky Erickson shall live forever by the right hand of God and the left hand of the Devil. Truly awesome.

  • I could not have said it better!

  • this is a great video,i`ve seen them many times back

when i lived in Corpus Christi Tex.back in the mid 60`s.

  • what can I say...this is the best quality version I've seen of this, really makes into the realm of GENIUS PUNK ROCK N ROLL easily! Rok rok

  • wish I heard this 30 years ago.

  • My God this is a great song.

  • virxen santa!

  • THE BIRTH OF GROOVY.

  • Non sono finocchio, ma Roky forse, se me lo chiedesse con gentilezza, me lo farei!
