@phantomwaltz There's an excerpt in Scorsese's new book that talks about this scene and how pissed he was that he didn't watch it "live". He was watching it on the monitors and Leo did this in one take b/c they were pressed for time. He talked about the whimper Leo let out and how no one told him to do that but it just worked. He told the sound people to take out all the random noise they added to the scene so we could hear him muttering to himself. This scene impressed the hell out of him.

in The Departed, the scene was treated with more subtlety through DiCaprio's reaction and wat was already established about Queenan and Costigan's relationship: Queenan was sort of a pseudo-fatherfigure to him
