In learning it myself i've found sometimes it fits the beat better than toms do.. take Disturbed drummer Mike Wengren for example, he doesn't seem to do a song without, but you can hear how effective it is when used in pattern form to go with beat instead of constant solid blast of double kick.

@peckp well thats what was always good about lars. he didnt just spam the double kick during songs. ONLY when it fit the song. one of the most heab banging momments in the past is the double bass section of One. and the double bass fit perfectly in fade to black. he has alot more feeling then most drummers.
