The minute I heard the opening of "Kyrie", I got goosebumps. It's as if I was in the that time frame. This song was playing on the radio around the time the tragedy had occurred. "Broken Wings" came out at the end of 1985. It really does bring back tangible reference of that period of time. I'll never forget the chill of the footage that was shown of the crew on their last walk that day to the endless loop replay of the explosion. They walked with such exuberance/life & then gone forever.
I'm very sorry that happened. We can not afford another space disaster like this one, and the other mission (2003). I hope NASA keeps this from happening again. And I know NASA is doing their best to keep space missions from going to pot.
@doddi00 In my religion we spell God with a capital G (you disrespect our creator). And Americans along with the world wide scientific community (NASA) were not challenging God we were challenging ourselves (man) using the gifts that God has given our intellect, our intelligence and our spirit for discovery.
@doddi00 What type of Christian says another human deserved death. Love thy neighbor as thyself is the second most important commandment. God is indeed in control of all things the space shuttle mission was a failure because God has pre ordained it so. But it was a good and true reason which we cannot see as with all death.
Hey "Wryost" - beauty is in the ear of the listener and it was appropriate music; as it was very popular on pop/rock at the time of the disaster and lyrically and if all you can say as a critique is "shitty" then that reveals just how uninformed and ignorant you are.
@mstorey83 Beautiful job. Beautiful song too. One of my favorites in H.S. back in 80's. Was in 11th gr. Science class at 11:38 that Jan. morning. Something you dont forget. Brings back lots of 80's memories too w/that song. Thanks for your time & work on this post.
I was 15 years old, in high school, getting ready to go to lunch...somebody said the shuttle just blew up. Later that afternoon, I saw the TV footage, and cried my eyes out.
I was 22 and living in Florida on that day...hanging clothes on the line and watching the single vapor trail split in two. Never before has something hit so hard - these 7 courageous, beautiful souls gone in literally a blaze of glory. We all will have our last day, but theirs was perfection..no pain, just flashing out doing something they loved. Peace to their families.
I was in 7th grade and on my lunch period when we all found out. Needless to say, every class I went to after that had a TV in it and we watched the coverage the rest of the day. Truly one of those days you will always remember what you were doing or where you where when you found out. God speed to everyone on the crew.
I as boarding an Air Force Transport to fly back to our home base at Hilll AFB Ut from Holloman AFB NM with about 3 dozen other airmen, it was the quitest flight I ever was on, not a word wa spoke above a hush, every one got home quick to turn the news on.
I was 15 at the time, and I remember that day clearly. I was in socials class (oddly appropriate, given what Ms. Mcauliffe taught). One of the students came in late and told us the shuttle had exploded. No one believed him until later in the day.
This was the Generational marker, and everyone who lived to see will never forget where they were and what they were doing....mine was 911 and i still remember the exact details of that day
Yup, first grade, Mrs Kennedy's class, we weren't watching it, however a teacher came in the class room and said "the shuttle blew up, turn it on channel 5 right now!" and we watched it. I've been fascinated ever since..
Great slideshow and music to go with it. I still get nervous every time Houston gives the throttle up call and the commander acknowledges it and feel much better after the solids are floating back to the sea. I remember running out of my 6th grade classroom in Gainesville, FL and you could see the trail with a white ball at the top of it. I have never seen so many kids and teachers cry at the same time. So sad!!
Thank you for the nice comments g8r9600, and I think this tragedy effected school children of 1980's and their teachers (in the western world) more than any other single event.
Slide show of the Jan 28, 1986 Space Shuttle disaster with musical selections by the group Mister Mister - "Kyrie (Eleison)" & "Broken Wings".
These two Mister Mister songs have always been linked in my mind to this tragic event in our nations history. "Kyrie Eleison" from the catholic mass "Lord have mercy" and has a line asking all of us ...will we follow? Many have and will continue to follow the example that these brave individuals at NASA have set for all of us.
I cry watching every launch. There is something huge about it. It is the unknown that appeals to me/us. I am the father of four childen and hope to see the launch coming up july 2009. I hope its a night launch. Wonderful tribute. Thank you so much for putting it together.

It is actually a combination of two songs that were very popular at the time of the tragedy that seemed to fit that prompted me to put this together, Kyrie and Broken Wings. Thanks for viewing.
the song is called "kurialayz". it's a good song and an appropriate one for such a tragic event and one that didn't have to happen because NASA knew about this problem since 1977 and did nothing about it.
Look at the picture at 01:37-01.39... at the lower right there is a puff of dark smoke coming from the booster. That is the O-ring burning. It sealed, and might have held 'til release of the booster, but the strong wind shear that day rocked the stack so much that the seal broke. On the pictures at 02:09 and 02:10 the extra flame that punctured the main tank is seen...
All such good people! and I sure hope that is was not, in vain! I do so blame the rush to launch was a political, However with all the ice that day showed the "o rings" or so they say was the problem! And I was working that day along with some friends, And for some reason all of us (5) went to a bar for lunch, When we walked in, It was like a church! it was so quite, we sat there about 4-5 minutes, and then we understood, from the replays on TVs, What a loss to all of us,RIP!And You are Missed!

I just watched a video about the challenger disaster. It was so sad!!!!!!! I felt empty after I saw it explode. I had to try to keep my tears in because I didn't want people to laugh at me. It's just so sad how people could die like that in front of millions of people.
I'm actually from Concord, New Hampshire, where Christa is from and in my research class in school I am doing a huge project on her, because I look up to her. God Bless All Who Have Died, not only in this tragic event.
I had to write a presentation on a space exploration related subject at Uni. I chose Challenger as a tribute. Mistake, couldn't keep the sadness out of my voice when I presented it, and nearly broke down twice.
Seven talented people lost because somebody couldn't be bothered to check out the way the 'O' Ring sealed the joint.
RIP, people. I hope you will always be remembered.
The lost of anybody life is sad, only those were well documented and caught on film get people attention. There were 1 millions killed in Iraq by bombs and bullets, thousands of americans died every year by guns. I hope you would write something substantiave. Human being is not perfect, so faults do happen, either by ignorance or human being has not been able to surpass any technical barrier. Only those fault committed by stupidity and ambition would deserve criticism.

who sings the first song in this video because its so nice and it was very sad I remember that day I was in year 3 watching it and doing talk on space shuttles and the crew that were on it and i ran out of the class room in tears RIP

wow!!!I wasn't born yet but i heard about it when my teacher told me, like last year, about how devistating it was to start with a smile counting the countdown and then end with a blank look and tears in your eyes!!!R.I.P
when i was reminded of this i wasnt alove but i saw vids and heardx baout it. and i went t NASA and KSC for field trips cause i live near both of them.
I was 3 year old (turning 4 in April) when this happened in 1986, it was one of my first memories of anything really tragic happening in the news, I remember this because she was the first school teacher to have been in a space flight, and it ended in tragedy. Reagan was also president when this happened. Yeah, I am 25 now, and I remember this as one of the first memories I have of NASA and the space program.
I was also 3 turning 4 in april (8th)....wanna know closeness? Susan Resnik, the astronaut....her brother was my pediatrician. Great first memories of NASA huh?
the one time NASA tries to put a civilian in space...."hey its ok! We're NASA! come on! We're gonna have 25 shuttle missions a year! soon everyone and their dog will be going up into...BOOM!!!
RIP Christa McAullifee and the 6 astronauts for their bravery.
We are only humans. To build such machines on this planet, and accomplish the things we have is incredible. We have learned from accidents like this, and have made things better. God Bless ALL involved with NASA
I don't know but it would not surprise me. The STS-51 crew and the entire NASA program has inspired many people around the world to do many wonderful things to benefit all of humanity.
It was French Composer Jean Michel Jarre. They were going to play a track simultainiously, Ron Mcnair (who played saxophone) in space whilst Jarre was performing back in Texas at his Houston Concert. Not quite sure how it would have worked with time delays and such, but it was not to be. He did compose another track called Ron's piece which he played instead.
its really sad about wot happened, her poor parents when they were confused and soon found out her daughter wasm killed in the disaster! I feel so sorry for them :(
this was such a sad day for America. I didn't think I was ever going to stop crying. RIP in peace guys of the space shuttle Challenger.

On this 22nd anniversary of the disaster, I would like to thank everyone who has worked and risked their life to make space exploration possible. All of you who are contributing to the international space efforts are helping humanity expand it's horizons and civility.

Many have and will continue to follow the example that these brave individuals at NASA have set for all of us.

you can blame nasa in my view for this because they knew there was a problem yet they allowed it to take off. they will rest in piece
At least like others said at least they did not suffer.
1986 was a really bad year , the Shuttle and then Chernobyl and many more accidents that year.

We are only humans. To build such machines on this planet, and accomplish the things we have is incredible. We have learned from accidents like this, and have made things better. God Bless ALL involved with NASA

Thanks. I can't help but think of the Challenger crew each time I hear the songs, they are forever linked in my mind.

I think there was a music composed by Jean Michell Jaime, in homege to the Challenger crew. Am I correct about?

I don't know but it would not surprise me. The STS-51 crew and the entire NASA program has inspired many people around the world to do many wonderful things to benefit all of humanity.

It was French Composer Jean Michel Jarre. They were going to play a track simultainiously, Ron Mcnair (who played saxophone) in space whilst Jarre was performing back in Texas at his Houston Concert. Not quite sure how it would have worked with time delays and such, but it was not to be. He did compose another track called Ron's piece which he played instead.
