@Democrat64@Democrat64 And why would males and females need to go to separate rooms after dinner for conversation? To properly "let loose"? I submit this is an antiquated sentiment.
@Democrat64 Such a relative term. Decency is always appreciated and should be commonplace. But to think that a comedian is "indecent" or even a joke is "indecent" because there's naughty words in it is antiquated. Nobody has a monopoly on what is considered "decent."
@superflyenglishvegan I was thinking the same thing.. And I adore Groucho Marx and the Matx Bros. movies. Ah well, I like him for his wit and comedy, not his antiquated views.
Love Groucho but he did lots of dirty jokes himself,it's funny to hear that coming out of his mouth.well,to be fair,I guess you could call it inuendo.
I don't get it. How did he slow down SOOOOOO much from here to his award acceptance 3 years later? What was he suffering from in the last couple of years of his life?
@Danimal300zx I asume you're talking about Groucho getting the Honorary Oscar. He received that award in 1977..This is from 1971..Age hits very quickly..
".....gonna go back to clean movies and clean plays on the stage." Guess he missed that one. Maybe now that they have gone as far as they can possibly go with being dirty, people will FINALLY tire of it and this will come to pass. lol
He was both right and wrong; the problem isn't "dirty;" Groucho was as dirty as many in his own way, if you read between the lines. The problem is "crassness," which is the success of lesser minds with no imagination. Still love Groucho, and respect him, mind you.
If you've ever read "The Marx Brothers Scrapbook", Groucho is NOT shy of relating "filthy" (his word) remarks. In fact the book is replete with such language. So I guess he's standing up for the social etiquette of public entertainment of his time OR he just didn't give a crap when he was even more advanced in age, when being interviewed for the book.
I'm impressed that Cavett was able to name actors, plays and previous ambassadors to Britain off the top of his head. These days the equivalent host would be able to name irrelevant fifteen-minutes-of-famers from shitty 'reality' shows but I doubt they could name something as obscure as an ambassador...

On a recent rainy day, I watched "A Day at the Races" with my 7 1/2 year old son. He was laughing so hard during several scenes (especially the intercom scene), I had to pause the movie so he could catch his breath. A 75 year old movie still has it's potency! Great comedy is timeless and for all ages.
Thats too easy - that kind of laughter; anybody can say something dirty and get a laugh but say something clean and get a laugh - that requires a comedian.
Wise and true words from one of the most wittiest and greatest real comedian of all time, fact is sadly today most comedians are not funny at all and lack complete talent and do nothing but irritate and bore you to death.
Groucho is a comedic genius, but I must say his sexism is not funny. Perhaps it's just that he's from another time, but I don't agree that women and men should be separated in social gatherings due to language.
When people ask me why I don't particularly like dirty jokes, I haul out that Groucho quote from about four minutes in. I know if I can make someone laugh with a clean joke, I've really accomplished something.
I love the Marx brothers movies and have always admired Groucho but what the hell is wrong with him here. Groucho didn't turn up the the Grouch did. He seems incredibly resentful of modern films and that he is yesterdays news. He then goes onto to say that men and women should be kept separate from each other when telling dirty stories. Not that we shouldn't be telling them but that we should lock the door and keep your wife out and talk about fucking your mistress. Much more moral then.
Groucho Marx was simply lodging the same complaint that everyone does when he gets old...that today's generation is doing everything wrong. Hell, even Aristotle wrote about it, saying that the kids of his day were dumb, disrespectful, too flighty, and too vulgar. It's all just nonsense. He'd have us return to the oppression of the Victorian Age? I'll fight that, kicking and screaming!
@Sheldonwh couldn't agree more, I like old movies and respect some of those legendary entertainers, but whenever there's a clip of them on youtube instead of just stating their appreciation of the material dozens of bitter people immediately start pulling anything new down...ever seen classic movies and noticed the bias against women, people of color, homosexuality, etc etc??It is was rampant and often destroys my enjoyment of the movie...Wilder, Cukor, Sturges were the exception NOT the rule...
@jgrannell1 Gilbert Gottfriend showed no mercy. i was rather amused by that! However, I'd love to play devil's advocate and argue that Groucho had no intention of being interesting and was trying to make a point, for lack of a better phrase, by being quotidian on TV.
@CluainSharoise He probably was! Groucho had a sharp mind and didn't pull any punches when telling how he felt. He might have been afraid of Groucho thinking he was an idiot and calling him out on it! It's a great interview though.
I think Groucho's puritanism is a little hypocritical. Check out The Marx Bros Scrapbook - a terrific book, btw - from 1973 (two years after this interview) which has a series of verbatim interviews with him. His language is FILTHY!

I'm always surprised when i see people, i used to think of as free thinkers and transcending their time, expressing opinions that are so mindlessly mainstream and typical of their generation. The other day i saw Bette Davis in an interview, forswearing feminism. Here Groucho steps out for sexual segregation and Victorian sexual values. I find it sad, but at the same time also very instructive.
He is absolutely right....we are rotten to the core..with sexual inuendos and porn. requiring zero tallent. It is wrecking the minds of the young and warping their sense of decency, morals and right and wrong..deliberately in view. We have created a monster that is now runing rampant through society
viva ze marx brozers, groucho's endurance and these videos remind us of a genius comedy family ... groucho is nonetheless the smartest outspoken and shrewd post stardom operator ... if harpo and chico were his equal, groucho was the most honest of them all ... they made us laugh and dream, he made (some of) us think (especially after his brothers had left existence)
all hail the smarts and hysterics of the marx bros
How many times was Groucho Marx on the dick cavett show because imdb says twice but when you go through youtube you find what appears to be him on at least six or so times.
I mean we've still got Woody Allen, Paul Merton, Russel Brand has almost introduced a new kind of comedy, and of coarse probably one of the greatest wits of our time, Stephen Fry.
He's so right. I'm 16 years old and I feel like Hollywood has lost all its glamour with all the sex jokes and everything. Back in the 40's, 50's movies were so much better and they were interesting and didn't require sex and swearing. The closest they ever came to sex in those days was when Rita Hayworth took her glove off in the Put the blame on Mame scene in Gilda and that is much sexier that most scene nowadays.
@GEVMM ye hollywood did lose its glamor biggggggg time look at the stars marilyn monroe sammy davis dean martin mamie van doren burt lancaster groucho redd foxx freddie prinze now its paris hilton whos famous4 a sex tape nicole richie famous4 being a stars daughter rihanna? wow
Today, at 40, I tell younger people I'm from the generation of Bing Crosby and Groucho Marx, Jack Benny etc... I was a child of the 1970's when these giants of Hollywood were still alive and making the TV talk show circuits. The 70's was the last blast of old Hollywood. A real golden age.
@911Shaman If you're in your 40s, you're not from the generation of Crosby and Marx. That was a generation or two before you. You're of the generation of "Maude," "All in the Family," and "Chico and the Man."
@911Shaman Everyone thinks the shitty decade they were a kid in was a golden age. The 70's were a boring, cream and shit brown coated catastrophe of a decade. Boring talk show appearances by over-the-hill talents did not brighten things.
@ASDMarauder007 No, I think YOU misunderstood him, he's commenting many comedians (at the time) have begun resorting to dirty/sex jokes for laughs, which is TOO EASY. This is even more relevant now since that's pretty much what a comedy consists of nowadays. It doesn't take talent to rub off penis/vagina jokes in comedy and I agree.
The man wanted people to laugh at comedy that was based on snappy dialogue, pauses, and sharp routine.
@Oquendo16 Seriously i'm 17, jokingly 52. Comedy ain't about easy or hard, it's about making people laugh and no worry about problems. And if you think all comedians today talk about penis and vagina, you should really learn how to look for things.
@ASDMarauder007 I agree w/ Marx, while you on the other hand, are trying to pass off your opinion as fact. Comedy is subjective. IMO, it's a genre that's hard to execute w/o having to resort to sex like most of today. It's not about making "people laugh and not worry." If you read more, comedy has been used in the past to subvert/take aim at serious issues in society - e.g. Comedy Italian style? The Great Dictator? - Learn how to listen, read, and observe other perspectives before posting.
@Oquendo16 i too think it's easy for dirty humor but hey the whole point of a comedian is too make people laugh, no matter which way he does it. Even charlie chaplin just wanted people to laugh. Put a smile on someone's face
@Oquendo16 Yes you are so right. We've let our morals slip very low. During the 60s we thought it was cool to, exploit sex. We thought we were oh so very mature and open minded during the 60s and 70s but now that we've grown up we see what was really happening. Our standards were slipping, the first sign of the imminent collapse of an Empire just like Ancient Rome. Western culture is about to collapse in on itself.

If Grouch only knew the garbage that's on now...he'd be rolling in his grave.
Too bad comedians like this are extinct.

@Oquendo16
I dunno, the show he's on there looks pretty crap, so crap TV seemed to have been around back then, too.

@Oquendo16 he'd be rolling in his grave thinking about your comment. Like seriously get a life. the man wanted people to laugh not bitch and moan

Seriously, how old are you?
Oquendo16 1 year ago

@Oquendo16 thats what im sayin...i agree

@Oquendo16 Yes you are so right. We've let our morals slip very low. During the 60s we thought it was cool to, exploit sex. We thought we were oh so very mature and open minded during the 60s and 70s but now that we've grown up we see what was really happening. Our standards were slipping, the first sign of the imminent collapse of an Empire just like Ancient Rome. Western culture is about to collapse in on itself.
