  • SHADOW'S CD PLAYER ON SUGGESTIONS

SONIC, Y U NO GO AWAY

  • the word awesomeness failed to describe this thing,,, :3

  • epic steampunk. who says you can't have both style and substance nowadays?

  • Dear Prof. Zuntaras,

I surmise the input of mechanical energy via the handcrank is stored within a large clockwork, which turns the spectral disc and levers the bellows, which in turn compress air across some intricate vibrational device (similar to vocal cords?) at the base of the megaphone, thus creating sound. I am curious as to how the information stored on the spectral disc gets transferred/translated to the vibrational devise I have previously surmised.

    Pure speculation of course.

  • Form and function. Probably more on the form side, depending on your stand point. Excellent.

  • that is cool i made a portable cdr (compact digital record) player (steampunk cd player) but I dropped it and it isnow fubar- ):

  • holy fooking s***! I LOVE IT!!!!

  • very well made sir. bravo. have you actually placed a driver in the horn, or is it aesthetic?

  • nice job

  • I really enjoy this, it looks beautiful and it's functional. I love the music too.

    Hope to see more. :3

  • that's pretty cool, but would be annoying to listen to that buzz! :D

  • I'd listen to Queen and Edguy on it. Or pull a detroit rock city XD

  • @2009ForJesus spam is just as annoying as jesus. and no one likes spam

  • lol

  • I want one!

  • oh how does it work? Is the wind up for show and its really electrical, Or is it nessisary to wind it up?

  • One word: NEED.

  • Congrats! Great job!

  • goodness me, i'd love one, but a tad smaller.

  • Wow that is really cool! And smart! 8-O

    Very nice job!

  • This is all kind of amazing. <3

  • That is very, very cool.

  • @Haelpennas . Thanks.

  • simply breath taking, sir. I wish such device was avalible for the general public.

  • Comment removed

  • thats gorgeous! Simply gorgeous! Wish my CD player was like that.

  • Building an actual CD player using steampunk technology would be cumbersome. Large vacuum tubes are vulnerable to overheating. Just imagine how much energy it would consume D:

  • The tubes aren't a problem... you can still get tube audio gear.

The main issue would be reading the disc.

  • The term steampunk was coined by K.W. Jeter as a variant of cyberpunk. Punk doesn't always refer to the music.

  • If you are trying to prove a point go back in history to the true definition of punk coined by Shakespear. Punk "A young man who is the sexual partner of an older man."And when I say young, I mean 11 or 12. They were theatre boys who kepts the older actors "company". Punk means a lot of things now, different, taking a stand, standingout. Deal with it.

  • I think you fail to understand the meaning of punk sir, progression against a broken system, and from the looks of this video we're doing prettty well at it so far, enjoy your beer...

  • that is absolutely amazing. bravo!

  • Wow, beautiful work.

  • god damn that's neat

  • It should have a Tesla coil on top of it!

  • although it may cause interference

  • But, it would look SO COOL!

  • simply amazing...  : }

  • I'll like to see the innards of that. Probably somewhat dispointing as most steampunk is just a facade, but still. What would be completely AWESOME would be a CD player that actually ran on steampunk technology, like vacuum tubes and relays, not just a gimmick case.

This is still complete awesomesauce in it's own right though.

  • Same here I'd be very proud to own something like that.

  • I'd rub it in peoples faces

  • i bet you can't do even that right.

At least he's not a sheep of everyday routine like I bet you are.

  • Fine job!

  • Well thought out project. Great imagination and Nicely executed.

  • That is BRILLIANT!

  • At least he is very creative.

  • 0.0 Wow! I'm jealous, pardon my ignorance but is this home made or a product for sale?

  • Sorry I didn't read the description, my question was answered there.

  • so now how do you get the spectral-synthesis to embed on the bi-orbital unit?

that semes like it would require a bit more power, for a full line-producton spectal bi-orbital embeder.

  • DR. Emilio, this is awesome.

  • That is pretty awesome!

  • I need a new audiometer, Bi-Orbital Spectral, or otherwise. This is truly beautiful work, the craftsmanship and style are swoon-inducing.

  • lololololololol

    just... lOL!

  • this is tha crazest thing ive seen is this a real product? if so thats awesome how there bringing back the style looks and such

  • This is beautiful! I wish appliances and electronic things were made like that. Everything these days looks functional, but boring.

  • @ElveeKaye and UGLY!

  • I almost cried. I'm just kidding. But I am jealous and I need to go lay down at once.

  • *drools* i want!!!

  • I want to mod out my big screen tv I need a site with suggestions, I have the artistic skill but I need to know what materials might work best.I am working on modding my fishtank like a Jules Verne copper with rivets contraption, its not technically Victorian, but I like breaking rules.

  • There is a site called "Brass Goggles" that is kind of a meeting ground for Steampunk folk, especially the inventors. Tons of great ideas and examples there. Additionaly, if you post a thread about what you want to do, those folks will have tons of suggestions to help you out.

  • Most impressive indeed, Sir!

  • Lachlant1984m don't think of "Steampunk" as just a mechanical system. It can and does incorporate electrical circuitry and motors, but the prime mover is steam. When "Steam was King", they had electrical motors, but not powerful enough to run industry. Steampunk can encompass all kinds of tech from just around the beginning of the steam era to the beginning of the electrical era, but the results can be anything from 3D viewing systems to FTL star travel, provided it's all done with STEAM :P

  • In this case sir, I beg you indulgence in the fact that I have substituted compressed air, via the bellows, for steam in my device above. Though heat may be absent, I belive that we can come to an agreement that the basic movement and power principle would be mechanically the same for compressed air and steam.

Do grab a zepplin and drop by for tea sometime so we can discuss this distinciton further as it intruiges me.

    Sincerely, Dr. Emilo Zuntaras

    LOL :)

  • Yes, indeed, my good man. Compressed air may be substituted for steam in many simpler systems to avoid the dicomforts and dangers of steam, which, as you know, is suited for higher power levels than simple air. As I mentioned in my earlier dispatch, Steampunk can encompass purely mechanical, compressed air, chemical and simpler electronic and electrical ciruitry, so long as somewhere steam is employed. I do believe substituting larger victrola horns will improve the sound quality somewhat :)

  • @RyuDarragh i only thought steam could allow u to buy ganmes and chat to people? are valve working on a top secret product or something?

  • @xbox50000: Not at all. The game company "Valve" has nothing to do with Steampunk, per se. They do indeed have a DRM/Distribution system they call "Steam" and have games with a steampunk theme, but the company "Valve" is simply exploiting the theme. They do not own or influence the genre.

  • @RyuDarragh naw, it was a joke, i know valve has nothing to do with steampunk

  • dude steampunk is so amazing

  • My God!!!!!!!!! That is truely amazing! Where can I find more info about that CD player? Are they still available? That is insane. Do you actually wind it up like an old gramaphone, or is it just ment to be a replica? I'm far too young to know all about gramaphones, but an aunt of mine had one and she showed it to me. That is so cool, I wouldn't nind something like that.

  • Actually part of the whole steampunk mindset is the fact that I designed and built that CD player from scratch in my garage. So like most steampunk devices it is a one of a kind.

  • I highly respect steampunk as I am not a fan of how things are made these days, like cars and furniture, which are now made with plastics. I preffer phonographs over CD players and Packards over Lexus'. I would rather have a steampunk-ish future than a cyberpunk one.

  • Thanks I obviouslly agree. Everything does not need to look the same and cheap and plasticy. Whats wrong with a device having a personality an a bit of permanance. Futuristic does not have to mean cold and sterile.

  • Exactly! Some people predict the future as being as everything being built to look like it's made out of plastic and painted white. Ever since the 70's everything has been made with cheap materials to save money. With all the technology we have we should be able to build things with even better material than in the past, but alas, everything is made to be disposable: Cars, TV's, Radios, Computers, CD players, record players, anm just about everything else.

  • Also a question, is the CD still read by means of a laser? And is the motor driven by a spring motor like a Gramaphone?

  • The laser meachanism is still intact, I just moved it to a different housing within the hollowed out clock in the front. The actually look of it is to suggest that the spring motor is driving the bellows, the air pressure from the belllows is then driving the cd player. You will forgive if I keep some of the design details a secret. We steampunk inventors can be pretty competitive. :)

  • Well it sure makes it look a lot fancier and interesting to look at. I've only recently learned about the steampunk lifestyle and I find it amazing! Digital things may be advanced and helped many situations, but they are complex in the sense digital circuts and pulses rather gears and mechanisms. I also like how steampunks prefer the "formal" look rather than boring sports clothes. I hope the steampunk style continues to live on!

  • Now this is a piece of kit I'd be proud to own. Nice work :)

  • wow and i used to think my dad was crazy for hording all the old stuff in our basement now ive found a use for it. plus it will make him happy to see it put to good use thank you for posting this vid!!!!! 5/5

  • Ich möchte das!!!!

  • Is steampunk actually a lifestyle?

  • yes it is.

  • It can be for some and maybe only a diversion for others. I have heard it said steampunk is like a top hat. It never fits two people the same, and everyone looks a bit different when they have it on, depending on how they choose to wear it. But there us no real wrong way to wear it.

  • NOTE: This response was originally posted responding to the question "Is Steanmpunk is really a life style choice?" I don't know how the rsponse ended up here. LOL

  • That is really brilliant. :D I would love something like that, lol. :D I was just wondering anyway, does the winder actually do anything? :D If so, what does it do? Or is it just to make it look better? :D

  • that is truly fantastic. I'm jealous...

  • Wicked useless... I love it!

  • Thanks. There is a thread about this invention and other cool steampunk devices like it over at the Brass Goggles website at brassgoggles. co. uk (take out that spaces before "co" and "uk").

  • Absolutely excellent work!

  • This is excellent. Great work!

  • this makes me 12 types of happy to see.

  • amazingly good old bean

  • My hat off to you, sir. Great work!

  • Thanks, There are numerous close up still photos of the device on Flickr if you do a "people" search there for "profzuntaras" and at Photobucket under the user name "zuntar".

  • Yay! You finished! This is so cool, sending to my husband now...

  • Possibly the coolest CD player in the world :D
