  • Where did he get the crew of 2300 for Hood? Hood had just over 1400 crew at her sinking.

  • @HelmutVillam Well spotted.

  • Most battleship were so heavily armored and extensively compartmentalized, even a 5000lb bomb would have a hard time sinking it. but there's one weakness. She carried in her a motherload of shells and explosives. Most battleship died when her magazine was penetrated and the shells and propellants ignited.

  • lol japanese planes r like bamboo and paper!!!! lol now thats what u call owned!

  • NEVER, EVER, CONSIDER YOURSELF RACIALLY SUPERIOR! REMEMBER, LATELY WHITE MEN HAVE BEEN DISCOVERING THAT BLACK GUYS HAVE BIGGER DICKS THAN THEY DO!

  • @melwabz horses have bigger

  • @Gnoppong they were also refitted a while before wth heavy anti-air capability, and prince of wales' was similar to that of the iowa class, if the iowas had ever been left out on their own they would have suffered the same fate, its the whole reason battleships were relegated to the roles they were by the time iowa popped up

  • @Gnoppong Dude after Pearl Habor Prince of Wales and Repulse where sunk by Jap aircraft and they were manned with AA guns and ready to fight also they had 4 destroters with them

  • @Gnoppong Japanese airforce caught the Americans totaly by surprise. There wasnt enought time to react to the threat. Most of the crew were on land when the first bombs and torpedos fell. It was a good thing that the Iowas werent there or they would have been turned into scrap metal. What use is from powerful AA guns if theres noone to man them.

  • Some had there casemate guns removed. In there place dual purpose guns were added. USS Pennsylvania had some casemate guns removed as well as the 3in AA guns. In there place 5in 25cal dual purpose weapons were added. USS Nevada received eight 5in 25cal AA guns. She like Pennsylvania previously had 5in 51cal guns in casemates. Some of the 51cal guns remained.

  • ? USS Nevada was modernized between 1927-1930. The Pennsylvania class received refits 1929-1931. New Mexico class 1931-1934. The Colorado class was modernized before the US entry into the war. These refits and modernization included the addition of AA guns both dual purpose and light AA weaponry, anti-torpedo bulges, improved fire control systems, and catapults for spotter aircraft.

  • Maybe. The Iowas are with out a doubt the finest super dreadnoughts to ever put to sea. The had a flaw thought. There underwater protection scheme was not adequate for late World War 2. The system was designed to protected against torpedoes who's warheads contained the equivalent of 700lbs of tnt. The Type 91 torpedo use at Pearl Harbor could have a warhead up to 1160lbs equivalent of tnt. Although the smallest warhead used only had the equivalent of 470lbs of tnt.

  • Can't help noticing that they didn't mention the greatest of all Battleships, the American Iowa Class, laid down in 1940.

  • haha, weapons of inferior quality, gave the americans an inferior Loss...

  • This is a snuff movie! It may be old , b&w and not current. However its horrendous and sad. As I sailor I can imagine what those poor men were going through when she capsizes. Never again must we fight like this, if at all.

  • is germany always been the greatest rival of britian empire

  • really? there had only been a unified german state since 1870 witch is not a very long time when you say germany ALWAYS have been the greatest rival of britian empire. i think i would make more sense to say that france always have been the big rival of the britian empire.

  • first it was france then germany in modern times, then britain just became another state in the us, its not that difficult to understand

    the new power is china

  • Thats not correct, there were, spain, france, russia and so on before. Germany became a rival in the late 1890,because it had a better and larger economic then the britian empire.

  • "For the first two years (of WWI) these craft did very little".

Except for the battles of Heligoland Bight, Falklands and Dogger Bank, where the Germans were defeated (devastatingly at Fk) by the British on each occasion.

  • was Repulse really obsolete?

  • By WW2, indeed. She was a Battlecruiser and was badly underarmoured.

  • The biggest cannon mounted on a ship was an 18.1 in.

  • @drago9024 Rifles not cannon. :)

Yamato and Musashi had 18.1" guns but the British also had 18.1" guns on a few monitors designed for shallow water shore bombardment.

  • The British BL Mark 1 gun was 18 inches exactly, so technically the Japanese beat everyone there. In addition, only 3 of the British guns were built whereas the Japanese built 18 and had planned for another 9 for Shinano, in addition to the 20" guns for the A-150s.

  • @HelmutVillam I stand corrected.

I figured they where the same size...oh well,I've learn something new. :)

  • Germany is working on their New land attack frigate with either a 155mm or 127mm main gun for shore bombardment. But to build a new Battleship just for shore bombardment is very cost ineffective. However most modern Anti ship missile are not design to penetrate armor the war head may break up upon impact, if installed with the AEGIS system the massive volume of its magazine are very resistance to saturated air attack, the major threat are submarines with heavy torpedoes like the spearfish.

  • The highly modernized Iowa doing 33knots can potentially catchup the enemy main fleet can devastate it, in a major blue water fleet engagement. It is also useful in destroying enemy beachhead. But are these scenario likely to take place in the future? I think not. And really the US navy has a bad track record against diesel sub, the Swedish Gotland, the Australian Colin and Japanese Harushio, exactly weak spot, in the Grey water of the land attack role.

  • the yamoto was a great battleship buti had 2 favor the the japanese heavy crusiers the Tone class the Nagasta could damage a American New-York class battleships man wat great ships but of course there is alway stagtige nd thats somthing japan didn't have but i do belive the lose of the Yorktown was a great move on there part

nd y did they sell the USS Enterprise 2 the junk heap????

luckisety aircraft carrirer in the world

  • Goes to show vid documentaries are simplistic and frequently erronoeus factually. Of the 3 ships, Bismarck was the first one that felt the pinch of airpower. Her fate was effectively sealed by airborne torpedoes. Not the POW, which bowed out to naval airpower next. Yamato was indeed the last to go blowing up under a rain of US airdropped bombs and torps.

  • y u take away video? no longer available

  • not for me

  • no iowa class

  • Great Work!!!!!

  • Nice

  • Oh What the hell i was always Told torps slowed bismark and it was POW all along

  • The shots from the POW slowed the Bismark down, but the torpedo that wrecked the Bismark's steering gear doomed the ship. There were two serious shell hits, one in the bow and one below the bridge. A third shell nicked the catapult and prevented the seaplane from being launched, so it's also counted as a hit.

  • nice

  • thanks!
