I have an E46 330i and the only performance item I have is the Signature Motoring performance CAI for about $160. The performance kit adds around 13.5HP on the dyno, sounds freaking great, and installs in under 30 minutes. Highly recommended.

-13.5 HP increase

-30 min. install time

Aside from the power gain, the SOUND is amazing at higher RPM but sounds normal in regular driving. I’m thinking about added high-flow exhaust next.

@ferrarikingdom not in the states. it has a straight pipe system it which mean that your emmission are way too high. you take out anything on the exhaust and just make one pipe from the front to the back. i still use one anyway until i go to get mine inspected, then i put the stock one back on it

My daily driver is E46 328i and E30 325 weekends. 328i is more responsive with Signature Motoring performance (CAI) intake kit. Installed it myself in under half hour. HP increase on the E46 is about 13.5HP for a cost of $170 or around $17 per HP gain. Best 1st performance mod to do. Other application data:

E30 series: 6.0-13.4hp gain

E36 series: 5.5-12hp gain

E46 series: 6.0-13.9hp gain

E92 series: 8.5+ hp gain

Z3/Z4 (all): 5.5-13.9hp gain

you couldn't be more wrong. I'm not trying to come off as rude, but at the speeds that car is going, it is ABSOLUTELY helping. IIRC, it delivers 120+ lbf of downforce at just 60 mph. Combined with the front splitter, that makes it stick like glue. If you analyze how air flows over the rear end of that car, you'll understand why it's so high. Trust me, on a car like this, if it wasn't functional, it wouldn't be there.

Its also got a rear defuser on the bottom, also fully functional, there is a firm in UK which supply these, made of carbon fiber, they add quite a bit of down force, even to a road going car.

The wing and splitter are 100% functional on this car. This isn't a car you'd see piddling along at 30 mph in traffic - it's a dedicated track car, and these things are necessary to maintain traction during high speed maneuvering. If you took the splitter off, the front end would skate around a lot more - and if you took the wing off, the back end might break loose in the turns. I agree that the hood and trunk should be painted, but not everyone likes painting carbon fibre.

With road courses such as this your speed varies largely for each corner and may rely less on high speed zones depending on the course itself, a wing like this may or may not be too large depending on the course, although I feel it is very functional for the obvious focus of this car and its adjustability to more than one course.

Pipes-schmipes. Quad pipes are marketing/show to distinguish the M cars from their non-M versions. Steve Dinan is one of the premier BMW tuners and his M3 exhaust only uses one side. The other side has dummy outlets simply to match the rear valance. Don't get me wrong, I'm an E46 owner myself.

I like the exhaust sound. Nice, tight racing exhaust. Not a Japanese/rice thing at all. Search on "Sweet sounding M3" for a clip of an E36 at Gingerman (Michigan). I've also seen him run at Grattan. Fast! And he ain't no ricer. Also try searching on "watkins glen e36 m3". What a similar car sounds like from the inside.
