One of my favourite Ray L songs. There is no artist like him, they may be as good, I don't know but his music call it traveler's or otherwise - is always delightful, refreshing and beautifully depressing for those who understand what that implies.
I think I'm missing something here.. If the ovious meaning is "beware the gossip and the mocker" then why does it seem liek the saying at the end of the fable "the beggar who holds his tongue dines on none but air alone"? (it seems to say that a beggar that doesn't speak up won't eat) Anyone?
It seems to me LaMontagne likes to play with irony and society's preconceptions. Two other songs by him I love are "Lesson Learned" and "A Falling Through." Both make me cry...

I think by beggar he means a person who wont ask, or work for what they want and need.
Ray is such a talent song writer, the irony of Dylan, the voice of Otis Redding, and the soul of a poet
