This video and the one in Tel Aviv are my favorites. I comeback a lot to them too. Yes, and I teared up too. If this is an easy way to get people more interested in the arts, let's do more and more.
I find myself returning to this video whenever I need a little extra sparkle and enjoyment. The mixed responses of the unsuspecting crowd are also intriguing, ranging from those who allow themselves to be pulled into the music and those who are baffled, turn away or appear frustrated. Neither opera nor spontaneity are for everyone, which is fine, but I was encouraged to see how many turned this into a playful moment.
In these times of mediocrity and distress... Let's change the Worl together through the beauty that we as humas are able to create. Let's find the inner good inside all of us and bring it out. Fernando (Madrid Spain)
La musique adoucit les mœurs! Ce n'est pas une vue de l'esprit mais une évidence!! Bravo à ces chanteurs qui ont fait de ce marché un théâtre extraordinaire!
How eloquently beautiful--how enriching to our lives and a perfect example of the best of the human condition. The man and the woman in tears had it right, it IS moving. More opera in the marketplace!
If you are looking for an argument to restore the historic market halls of the 19th and early 20th century in Europe, here it is! Just an awesome moment!
I suspect the dislikes on this video were only mis-steps by hitting the wrong tab as too many videos I've liked, I've done. wish there were an easy way to correct this, but youtube is too big to make this readiably available. (sorry for my misspellings)
Wonderful! I just love seeing the people's surprised and delighted reactions! My first experience seeing this done in a market is this video. I've since seen other videos of it done at malls and markets and while the camera work here is much better, the sound isn't that great and that's a shame because the "Brindisi" is such fun. Still, thanks for posting it. I wish we could have more of this uploaded. Any possibilities of that? : )
@handeltenor Both selections are from La Traviata. The first one is "Parigi o'cara" from the last act. Then they go into "Brindisi" from the first act.
Opera companies around the country ought to be doing something like this in their communities. Great classical opera need to be available to the general population. The audience response shows you how much good music is appreciated.
I'm overwhelmed with joy at hearing this! Just astounding. Just lovely beyond words. But the thing that hits me the MOST about it. Is that these gods of music, these wonderful performers walk around us every day and could be very ordinary looking. If we pay whatever it costs to go see an opera, we go to that certain place, sit on those seats and enjoy for a few pleasurable moments. But to think that these wondrous performers are walking around us each day.
Like other here, I'm not a great opera fan. This, however, took me by surprise. I cried. Me. And I'm not given to crying a lot. This touched a nerve. Especially the people at the end:
The man who wiped away a tear. The woman who smiled at the camera as she too, dabbed at her watery eyes.
What a great idea for the arts. I'm an actor.
We NEED THIS MORE OFTEN! It tingles the spine and stirs interest.
Absolutely beautiful and moving! I know Brindisi was the second song, can you tell me the name of the first song please? I want to be able to find it elsewhere--is it also from LaTraviata?
how nice that these people live in a country where they might even be able to tell the difference between good music and crap or good singers and bad. i am not saying they can tell, but they might be able to. in the US they definitely cannot. and how nice for the singers that they have the opportunity to be paid for singing. the wireless mics they are wearing are well hidden. in the US anyone to sing well in a marketplace is treated as a criminal. only bad singing allowed.

This is absolutely mind-blowing... I was in tears watching this and I'm not normally so emotional very early on a Sunday morning...! The camera-work to capture those smiles and tears was brilliant. Thank you so much..I've never been to the opera but now I have a New-year resolution to do so.
Opera in the round... what a great idea. Heard about this on a BBC World service discussion programme. I'll be passing on this a link to this precious video-clip to all of my friends. Thanks again.
Hi mate, thought I recognised it ,I worked on La Traviata at the WNO. Just one question where did they hide the orchestra LOL Cheers mate

I know sandhorst, but this post was not ment to be put here, but to be sent to one of my friends who is of Italian origin. What I wanted to say was that though everything was happening in Valencia, finally it's about Italy and its wonderful people (whom she belongs too).
For silvia28091958. Sorry then, it was a misunderstanding. I also share with you my admiration for Italy. Actually, here in Valencia, we love to boast we're the most Italian of Spanish cities!
It is a great way to promote opera to the general public. The Met might try it somewhere in NYC or maybe the Dallas opera could do it in the Farmer's Market.
Let's put this in perspective! Have you ever tried singing in a public space with people milling around, talking, and you can barely hear the accompaniment and, of course, there is no eye contact with the accompanist? I have. It's damned difficult. (And then there is the recording quality.) The singers ARE good - maybe not top drawer - but overall, quite up to the task at hand. I say bravo! to this little bit of serendipity.

Yes, it is "Parigi o cara" from La Traviata. They are two lovers singing "We will leave Paris, oh dear one,
We will spend our lives together;
You will have reward for sorrows undergone,
My(your) health will be restored.
You will be desire and light for me,
The entire future will smile upon us."
But operas are tragedies... not happy end!
