@Yuidream Matteucci is not interesting to watch, he is just cruel and that's it. This is the easiest way to play Frollo, not that it's wrong to play him that way but he is certainly not the best Frollo and doesn't make me heart bleed with his pain and his "I love you".
@Lilacsinm I disagree! Because the character of Frollo in the novel is very cruel as well. He knows full well he is responsible for putting Esmeralda in prison, he knows full well he tried to kill Phoebus, he knows he delivered her to the hangman several times - if he were truly a man of God, he would recognize that she is not interested in him and that he certainly should respect her decision to not want him - not give her an ultimatum and then kill her.
@EmilyGreene1984 Frollo is not cruel, he is torn between his religion and his lust for a woman and he is driven to insanity because of it. He raised his brother after their parents died, he took in Quasimodo, gave him a home in the cathedral and a job as a bell ringer. There is much more to Frollo than just a cruel madman and Daniel plays him very well. In any case it's much more interesting to see someone play Frollo as someone that you can actually like at first.
@EmilyGreene1984 - Frollo is not simply cruel because he is a bad person, he is crazy and I've never said that he loved Esmeralda, lust is the word that I used. His character is layered, it's not that he is an angel or a devil, he is very human and struggling between two worlds. Dismissing him as just being a bad person is not looking at the whole picture which is a shame and your loss.
Comparing Lola and Helene, I think Lola is better in the torture scene - she shows emotion and pain, she screams - but Helene is at least as good than Lola in this song and Un Matin Tu Dansais. I like how she transforms from tired and tortured to tigress during these songs.
Well, we can find something good and something bad about everyone here.
For example, my position is that
a)for Quasimodo she's first woman that doesn't run away, which tells us that she's kind, but nothing about him;
b)Phoebus is soldier, who declares love to about 10 women per average day;
c)Frollo has walked streets of Paris before, and seen women, both French and Gypsies before, and yet Esmeralda is the one he gives up his career for, or, at least, risks with it. What about that? ;)
@EmilyGreene1984 It's not that much against my point. ;) Have you noticed, how people that you never cared about - like some of your classmates, or coleagues form previous job, perhaps - just fade away, slowly and gently. On other hand, when parting from someone we have truly loved, it's always with tears, discussions, conflicts, etc., etc. Different century, and different level of emotion - but still, the same principle.
@Lilacsinm Attempt at murder is still murder and he eventually handed Esmeralda over to the gallows and took pleasure in her death. That is not a sign of love - its a sign of lust. In the end, Frollo got punished as he deserved for trying to take Phoebus' life as well as taking Esmeralda's via giving her over to the soldiers to be hanged.
@Raaawrbeans Maybe because in the original story, Frollo isn't like Daniel Lavoie... Imagine he's old, in a certain way obsessed by her, and not attractive at all. Would you accept his proposition then ? :P
Actually Frollo is only 35 year old in the book (Daniel is ten year older here ! ) and isn't described as an ugly "old" man...not even once...He's tall, austere, cold but his eyes are like fire...With such description I can't imagine him as a repulsive old turd but rather as a tormented, dark (but fiery) mature man.
I'm sorry....I love Daniel Lavoie, I love how he sings and how he acts....he is very sweet and tormented as in the book of Hugo....but please, try to see Matteucci, he is so passionate and powerful and angry....I love both, they are two face of the same character....please don't criticize me if you have not see Matteucci yet!
I'm Italian and I am passionate as Matteucci, so is obvious that I prefer him...and in Belle the Italian words are more strong than the French, the song is quite different! I love Lavoie and Matteucci too, sometimes I prefer the first and sometimes the second!
The amusing part is that the only people who would rate down a comment defending Daniel Lavoie are Italians who think that the clown who plays in the Italian version is better. I really don't mind being rated down by people who don't know what they are talking about, you are welcome to continue :D.
XD
Why is everyone obssed with Gringore and Frollo what about QUASIMODO?????????
I mean look Gringore is selfish and only cares for himself and Dajail and Frollo try's to commit rape and murder (even though Phoebus deserved that stabbing) Quasimodo is the only kind character in the novel and he has personality flaws too
I actually have a teory about that. First, Frollo: He has something. He´s a anti-hero the perfect character for who likes complex and not so good characters. He is not evil but he´s not good. After all he is you or me feeling extreme feelings and not being able to control them. He is the type of character that either you love or hate him.
Gringoire is funny. The fresh air in the book and the musical. In the middle of all the pression, of all the disgrace he appears and make everybody laugh.
and guess to retract my statemeant Frollo is kind of "kind" to Quasimodo i mean he adopted him
(but i don't go back on what i said about Gringore) even though i can relate to him in the fact that been a wrriter is difficult (i write short stories and other things) and I do think Frollo is a victim at the hands of Esméralda yeah i think i was'nt thinking properly when i wrote that comment about Claude he is a good character i was just angry because "geepunky" said he's the perfect man he's not
I wouldn´t say that Frollo is a victim at the hands of Esmeralda. I think that is his point of view. I used to make some extreme comments about Frollo because I do love him a lot, he´s a great character and even though I still think Esmeralda could have dealed with Frollo in other way, the truth that she was scared of him. In their realationship they had both faults. Frollo was to harsh on her in the benining because he thought that his love for her it was her own fault...
She was witch or something like that. And she was too naive and too childish to understand him. And also she didn´t have the full view of him
About Frollo being a perfect man, I think that depends of the point of view, of the kind of people who says it. Maybe for some he isn´t and maybe for other people he is indeed a perfect guy (even though this scene helped a lot)
That is tej piont..She is nota witch..she is just gypsy girl..a street dancer..But You are right..They have both faults..But they could live happily ever after..He was not sorry when they hang her..and she.she was too naive..I agreed with every word of Your two comments:)(You post them month ago:D)
HmmI think those lines are great too(btw I do understand what You write).. I love the way he confesses her love ..This Je t'aime is breathtaking..end Etre pretre..This song is sad..Beautifull melody and stunning words..amazing:)both songs..and Comedie musical:)
Then you have Quasimodo. He is good. Ok he kills Frollo but I mean Frollo forced him to.
So Quasi is the goodie one. Everyone likes. Almost everybody likes Quasi because he is fine and he´s good. But he is not a Frollo or a Gringoire. He´s not complex or funny, he´s not complicated or talented, he´s not for you to hate or love. He´s not up for discussion...he´s just Quasi
He´s like Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. I love Obi Wan (I do really). But I like Palpatine and Yoda too.
George Lucas should have had him recite a poem in one of the films that would be funny I never liked Obi Wan I don't know why he was just to calm and bossy (in the prequels) i mean God he did Anakins Head in no wonder he (Anakin) turns into a physocpatic lunny (Darth Vader) and Palpainte is cool as well
And I don't hate Frollo i just think that he's not magicly wonderful i mean he is complex i get that and he is very pityful at parts of the text
wait my second-last statment sounded kind of gay (did it? I think it did) I mean i don't know if Frollo's the perfect man i'm not a girl i could not tell but I prasume he woul'nt be in their eyes What about Luke Skywalker do you like him i kind of found him meoldramatic and winey that's just me
Well I don´t really dislike Luke...actually I prefer the prequels. I mean when Palpatine is played by Ian McDiarmid, and you don´t know if he´s good or bad..in the prequels makes he me remember Iago of Othello(another of my favourites characters). Probably that´s why I love him so. Even though Palpatine is far worse than old Iago..
i can't say anything about "old Lago" cause i've never read "Ohtello" and I don't really plan to cause I don't like Shaksperre after Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth which i've read both scripts and their tyring to say the least he's completely overated about Palpatine i read somewhere on a dicussion form about SW that he generaly beleive that what he was doing was right and that he was not "evil" like most people view him more an "anti-villan" I think he did generaly think the Jedi where imoral
You never read Othello? You definitly should. Romeo and Juilet sucks and I have never read MacBeth. But R&J has the most stupid ending of the History of literature.
I have never read that thing about Palpatine...it´s a rather original ideia. I like it.
I read the fanfic that you gave me a link for oh by the way thanks so much for the link! I hope i read the right one I just read the one that appeard straight on the page from the link it was very good i loved how Jeahn Frollo walked in on Claude trying to seduce Esméralda lol and your right R&J has a crap ending it's so boring and the story's not even orginal the tale of two doomed coupples was around way before shakespere i might give "othello" a try though if i find the script
which opéra's have you listend to i've heard "the magic flute" (in English) and "the turn of the screw" and I'm going to listen to the "beggars opera" and then i've heard "pirates of pinzance" and "the mikado" by Gilbert and sullivan but i knid of count them as musicals because they've quite a bit of dialouge and i count "Les miserables" as a modren opera (it's so wonderful!) and I kind of count "Notre dame" as a modren opera
well sorry I meant most people who have read the book and/or have seen this musical are usually just into Gringore and/or Frollo I myself like Frollo he's quite a good character and he's very sympathetic but I think him and Gringore are overated Quasimodoe's clearly the protagonist
yes I meant he's the "hero" I know Notre dame is the main character you can be the main character and not be the hero just like the "kite runner" where Amir is the main character but another guy called Hassan is kind of the "hero" or "good guy"
oh it's a very good book where reading it for English at school at the minute but been a pretenious nerd I read the book before everyone else and finished it..There's also a film of it
Dear GOD. The Russian and Italian Frollo's a great, but how can anyone compare to THIS? His expressions, his eyes, and his voice are just so perfect for this part. This entire song breaks my heart. When he's saying "in an hour you'll be dead", you can hear how painful it is for him to say it. Lavoie is the master of this role.
"un matain tu dancies" it has such a great tune and really places out the furstration and longning Frollo feels in the novel and shows how Esméralda really truely beleives that Phoeubs will come and rescue her
but your right Louvire is great in this role
and i've seen nearly all the films of hunchback and he's the best Frollo actor i think
I don't think he could have gone the "right" way about it being a prêtre, mais I agree. It's all of those feelings for her released in that one diaphragmatic breath, he plays his character so well!! Yet, I believe during être Prêtre et amier une Femme he could have moved a little more. He seemed somewhat stiff.
I want to offer to everyone, who found the novel long & boring, read Tolstoy's novel "War & Peace" to find out what is really long & not exciting at all. "Notre Dame De Paris" is very deep novel, full of symbolism, so it's not for dull-witted people, who's used to be explained everything & don't force themselves to think even if a little bit.
If you say that "War and Peace" is not deep and boring then I really doubt your ability to understand "Notre Dame de Paris". Tolstoy is one of the best writers ever and "War and Peace" is his best novel.
I didn't say, "War & Peace" is not profound as I didn't say, that it is. Aha, Tolstoy is quills's genius as Pushking is, right? Do you really believe, that it's your own thoughts? The only thing, you proved to me, that you're really bad in literature, if you compare in such way Hugo & Tolstoy, writers, that have nothing in common at all. Also can't see connection between your assuming & my words.
i think that his voice is one of the best ive ever heard and the bookk is boring in spots but frollo has the longest monologues ever like three or four pages of just him talking
I dont agreed whit you.I think book is wonderfull!!!!! Frollo has the longest monologues, true. But the are beautifulll!!!And you are right. His voice is incredible
i'd be freaked out (and touched to a larger extent) if a guy screamed like that to me... but it is really really impressive!!!!! and Daniel Lavoie is AMAZING!!!
That video just sends shivers up and down my spine. I just LOVE the way he confesses his love to her - and her response is really like hitting him right into the face.
"Qu'est-ce que je vous ai fait pour que vous me hassiez?" - "Ce n'est pas de la haine, c'est que je t'aime... Je t'aime!" - "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai dont fait pour qu'ainsi vous m'aimiez - moi pauvre gitane et vous cur de Notre-Dame..."
Actually, ever since I dropped French at school last year because I couldn't stand the language any more, despite of being the best in the course, I thought I'd never come back to actually finding pleasure in it. That changed it all, though, and I guess I'll read the book soon, in French.
Well, I'll see what it's like. ;) At the moment I have much more books to read, so that one can really wait. And before trying to read it, I'd also have to repeat French grammar, otherwise I won't be able to understand most of it. ^^
J'adore...J'ADORE Notre Dame de Paris. Toutes les acteurs...toutes les choses! I like Phoebus in this, Dechire is an awesome song I think at least. I think Daniel's voice in this particular song is breath-taking. C'est formidable..

Daniel Lavoie is so good but I prefer Vittorio Matteucci, the italian Frollo. He is so amazing, passionate and heartbreaking!

Hfirimain1274 2 years ago
Mateucci did well in"Mi distruggerai" but he is no match for Lavoie, especially in "Belle".
KRG11988 2 years ago 2
I'm Italian and I am passionate as Matteucci, so is obvious that I prefer him...and in Belle the Italian words are more strong than the French, the song is quite different! I love Lavoie and Matteucci too, sometimes I prefer the first and sometimes the second!

The amusing part is that the only people who would rate down a comment defending Daniel Lavoie are Italians who think that the clown who plays in the Italian version is better. I really don't mind being rated down by people who don't know what they are talking about, you are welcome to continue :D.

Sta cippa!

Why is everyone obssed with Gringore and Frollo what about QUASIMODO?????????
I mean look Gringore is selfish and only cares for himself and Dajail and Frollo try's to commit rape and murder (even though Phoebus deserved that stabbing) Quasimodo is the only kind character in the novel and he has personality flaws too
donfrollo2 3 years ago
I actually have a teory about that. First, Frollo: He has something. He´s a anti-hero the perfect character for who likes complex and not so good characters. He is not evil but he´s not good. After all he is you or me feeling extreme feelings and not being able to control them. He is the type of character that either you love or hate him.
Gringoire is funny. The fresh air in the book and the musical. In the middle of all the pression, of all the disgrace he appears and make everybody laugh.
DaniMajor 3 years ago
and guess to retract my statemeant Frollo is kind of "kind" to Quasimodo i mean he adopted him
(but i don't go back on what i said about Gringore) even though i can relate to him in the fact that been a wrriter is difficult (i write short stories and other things) and I do think Frollo is a victim at the hands of Esméralda yeah i think i was'nt thinking properly when i wrote that comment about Claude he is a good character i was just angry because "geepunky" said he's the perfect man he's not
donfrollo2 3 years ago
I wouldn´t say that Frollo is a victim at the hands of Esmeralda. I think that is his point of view. I used to make some extreme comments about Frollo because I do love him a lot, he´s a great character and even though I still think Esmeralda could have dealed with Frollo in other way, the truth that she was scared of him. In their realationship they had both faults. Frollo was to harsh on her in the benining because he thought that his love for her it was her own fault...
DaniMajor 3 years ago
She was witch or something like that. And she was too naive and too childish to understand him. And also she didn´t have the full view of him
About Frollo being a perfect man, I think that depends of the point of view, of the kind of people who says it. Maybe for some he isn´t and maybe for other people he is indeed a perfect guy (even though this scene helped a lot)
DaniMajor 3 years ago
That is tej piont..She is nota witch..she is just gypsy girl..a street dancer..But You are right..They have both faults..But they could live happily ever after..He was not sorry when they hang her..and she.she was too naive..I agreed with every word of Your two comments:)(You post them month ago:D)

Mon extrait préfèré c'est:
Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai donc fais,
Pour qu'ainsi vous m'aimiez?
Moi, pauvre gitane...
Et vous, curé de Notre Dame...
Qui est en plus sur l'air de la fabuleuse chanson: Être prêtre et aimer un femme...
kriseb2 3 years ago
HmmI think those lines are great too(btw I do understand what You write).. I love the way he confesses her love ..This Je t'aime is breathtaking..end Etre pretre..This song is sad..Beautifull melody and stunning words..amazing:)both songs..and Comedie musical:)
KamilaStelmarczyk 3 years ago
DaniMajor 3 years ago
yeah Yoda's hailerous i love how he talks
George Lucas should have had him recite a poem in one of the films that would be funny I never liked Obi Wan I don't know why he was just to calm and bossy (in the prequels) i mean God he did Anakins Head in no wonder he (Anakin) turns into a physocpatic lunny (Darth Vader) and Palpainte is cool as well
And I don't hate Frollo i just think that he's not magicly wonderful i mean he is complex i get that and he is very pityful at parts of the text
donfrollo2 3 years ago
Yes but I hate Anakin. He´s too...full of himself.
DaniMajor 3 years ago
I supose your right there
donfrollo2 3 years ago
wait my second-last statment sounded kind of gay (did it? I think it did) I mean i don't know if Frollo's the perfect man i'm not a girl i could not tell but I prasume he woul'nt be in their eyes What about Luke Skywalker do you like him i kind of found him meoldramatic and winey that's just me
donfrollo2 3 years ago
Well I don´t really dislike Luke...actually I prefer the prequels. I mean when Palpatine is played by Ian McDiarmid, and you don´t know if he´s good or bad..in the prequels makes he me remember Iago of Othello(another of my favourites characters). Probably that´s why I love him so. Even though Palpatine is far worse than old Iago..
DaniMajor 3 years ago
i can't say anything about "old Lago" cause i've never read "Ohtello" and I don't really plan to cause I don't like Shaksperre after Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth which i've read both scripts and their tyring to say the least he's completely overated about Palpatine i read somewhere on a dicussion form about SW that he generaly beleive that what he was doing was right and that he was not "evil" like most people view him more an "anti-villan" I think he did generaly think the Jedi where imoral
donfrollo2 3 years ago
You never read Othello? You definitly should. Romeo and Juilet sucks and I have never read MacBeth. But R&J has the most stupid ending of the History of literature.
I have never read that thing about Palpatine...it´s a rather original ideia. I like it.
DaniMajor 3 years ago
I read the fanfic that you gave me a link for oh by the way thanks so much for the link! I hope i read the right one I just read the one that appeard straight on the page from the link it was very good i loved how Jeahn Frollo walked in on Claude trying to seduce Esméralda lol and your right R&J has a crap ending it's so boring and the story's not even orginal the tale of two doomed coupples was around way before shakespere i might give "othello" a try though if i find the script
donfrollo2 3 years ago
which opéra's have you listend to i've heard "the magic flute" (in English) and "the turn of the screw" and I'm going to listen to the "beggars opera" and then i've heard "pirates of pinzance" and "the mikado" by Gilbert and sullivan but i knid of count them as musicals because they've quite a bit of dialouge and i count "Les miserables" as a modren opera (it's so wonderful!) and I kind of count "Notre dame" as a modren opera
donfrollo2 3 years ago
Yea...About that...Iam I a piece of raw meat or something?!?!...IAM obsessed with Quasimodo...Do I not count for anything?!?...LMAO ^_^
QuasimodoOfNotreDame 3 years ago
well sorry I meant most people who have read the book and/or have seen this musical are usually just into Gringore and/or Frollo I myself like Frollo he's quite a good character and he's very sympathetic but I think him and Gringore are overated Quasimodoe's clearly the protagonist
donfrollo2 3 years ago
Lmao ^_^ Actually Quasimodo isn't the main character,it's Notre Dame herself ^_^
QuasimodoOfNotreDame 3 years ago 3
yes I meant he's the "hero" I know Notre dame is the main character you can be the main character and not be the hero just like the "kite runner" where Amir is the main character but another guy called Hassan is kind of the "hero" or "good guy"
well Amir kind of is but not really

The Kite Runner?!?...Iv never seen that ^_^

Frollophile 3 years ago 13
i agree!
but i prefer the song that comes after this
"un matain tu dancies" it has such a great tune and really places out the furstration and longning Frollo feels in the novel and shows how Esméralda really truely beleives that Phoeubs will come and rescue her
but your right Louvire is great in this role
and i've seen nearly all the films of hunchback and he's the best Frollo actor i think

"It's not hate...I love you...I LOVE YOU!!"
The build-up to "JE T'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIME!" breaks my heart :(

I want to offer to everyone, who found the novel long & boring, read Tolstoy's novel "War & Peace" to find out what is really long & not exciting at all. "Notre Dame De Paris" is very deep novel, full of symbolism, so it's not for dull-witted people, who's used to be explained everything & don't force themselves to think even if a little bit.
PatroclusLover 3 years ago
If you say that "War and Peace" is not deep and boring then I really doubt your ability to understand "Notre Dame de Paris". Tolstoy is one of the best writers ever and "War and Peace" is his best novel.
montanja 3 years ago 2
I didn't say, "War & Peace" is not profound as I didn't say, that it is. Aha, Tolstoy is quills's genius as Pushking is, right? Do you really believe, that it's your own thoughts? The only thing, you proved to me, that you're really bad in literature, if you compare in such way Hugo & Tolstoy, writers, that have nothing in common at all. Also can't see connection between your assuming & my words.

I love this musical. :)
