What is that unit mounted on the dash? A throttle position sensor of some kind? What is its purpose?

Looks like an air/fuel ratio indicator. Usually used for tuning fuel systems; green is rich, red is lean. My $.02.

AFR sensor, from the o2 sensor. early warning if something happens to the air fuel mixture during a race.
