My folks feed feral cats, too. And THIS is why they NEVER leave cat food out overnight - it attracts unwanted attention from dangerous animals. We've witnessed raccoons come in and kill kittens. SO don't teach the raccoons to expect food at that station!

This video demonstrates how wrong people are who label raccoons as mean animals. Through it all, the raccoon kept his cool. I have a video from this fall of two little kittens who "ran" with a mother raccoon and her kits. We eventually captured the kittens, but not because we were afraid the raccoons would hurt them. There was a love-love relationship going on.

that's because the raccoon just didn't care about the kitten. It was harmless to it. Raccoons aren't really mean, BUT when things don't go their way some can become viscous. Also not all raccoons are the same. Some are nice, some are not. Some gang up and attack cats/dogs.. Most won't though.

I wouldn't risk another confrontation. Raccoons can kill cats, and a kitten would be pretty much defenseless if the raccoon hadn't been preoccupied with the food.

@kobun37 i wouldnt be so sure about that, my cat probably weighs 5 pounds and hes had several violent encounters with raccoons where he was the victor. One bit him in the leg needed stitches and a good vets visit but the raccoon never was in our yard again, he's a vicious cat for some reason. ive seen him have fights with other cats, two birds and even 2 owls once late at night, he jumped like four or five feet off the ground and almost grabbed a white owl out of mid flight. it was crazy.

Raccoons are mostly passive. He was just interested in the food, not the fur ball spitting at him.
