  • Hell yeah!

  • Penn sounds like he definitely knows a bit about guitar for someone who hasn't picked it up.

  • Long live the REAL king(s).

  • Dude, Penn is so high!!! Awesome!!!

  • bullshit, dale doesen't get those sounds from playing a righty, lefty. He get gets those sounds cause he wants to. I'm cool with everything else.

  • Dick Dale is the man!

  • I always wondered how he played the second run-through on Miserlou on the high E string. Makes sense. On regular string line-up its hard not to pull that high E when it's so skinny and at the bottom of the neck. Having at as the first string...did he play everything that way? Wow.

  • I'm with kidflock

WTF just happened in that video

  • Hi Penn fans. Penn Says videos have been discontinued, so you won't be seeing any new content on here. You can check out our Profile on our Channel Page for more info. We'll still be checking in, so hope to keep chatting with you all! Thanks!

  • that's the way I play guitar too! I taught myself, and I just picked it up the "wrong" way.

I'm obviously not as good as dick dale though...

  • what just happened?

  • penn!!! check out Otis Rush! the best blues electric guitarist second only to muddy waters. but Rush did the same thing, willie dixon respeceted him soo much he gave songs to Otis.

  • um Hendrix was left handed and restrung a righty guitar. dont know what your talkin about

  • Yeah, except Dale didn't restring it.

  • he restrung it with bass strings

  • @usernam4444 Hendrix played a right handed guitar, but restrung the guitar and played it as a lefty, so in a sense he turned it into a left handed guitar. Dick Dale left the right handed guitar as a right handed guitar and just played it upside down with his left hand. When he was given a left handed guitar, he couldn't play it, so he restrung a left handed guitar turned it into a right handed guitar and played it upside down with his left hand.

  • @EbonyBunny1 that is so fuckin confusing

  • @EbonyBunny1 Hendrix actually did both.

  • who is this dude?

  • Albert King is another guitarist who played with his strings in "reverse" order - I believe he was one of the first, actually.

Doyle Bramhall II is a more recent and current blues guitarist who also prefers the "reverse" string order. Gives him a very sharp and funky sound. I've tried it myself, but found some of the chords I like become too impractical to reach.

Also you don't NEED to buy a left-handed guitar and flip the whole thing around. Instead just buy a custom neck and adjust the bridge

  • @IndianKBlue Hmm, I wonder if the people who did this had longer fingers than most.

  • @IndianKBlue yeah, it does make some chords difficult, but it forces you to be a little more creative.

  • Nerdy comment:

The low string on a 7 string guitar is usually tuned to B.

  • Woo... project much? I'm probably not your type honey.

  • there's a hyphen in "dumb-fuck".... you dumb fuck (another usage of the term...)

  • Otis Rush and Albert King flipped the guitar like that, too. I think JJ Cale does the same.

  • I wish Penn could know that a great part of him doing these youtube videos, is it sometimes even feels like you're talking to someone who would otherwise probably not give a shit about you. 'Celebrities' who do these videos, unedited, uncut, are cool.

  • I missed the Married With Children connection to this vid.

  • Dick Dale is the man! I love playing Misirlou on Guitar hero!

  • I love playing Misirlou on real guitar.

  • Are you talking or just sayin.....

  • "This is SO boss." - Penn

  • Dear Cancer: Fuck You. Ya lost again you asshole.

Dear Dick Dale: You're an American Treasure - keep rockin'.

  • penn i love your laugh

  • True.

    >>>"Lose the hair dye and the chin pubes and he'd look like any other old grey fatcat Republican."

  • Penn's talking about everything but and this dork has to make his snide, bigoted partisan comment. Not the guy you want to see deciding who gets in the life boat. "Mean-spirited" comes to mind, but I may not be allowed to use that without DNC approval.

  • Fat fuck shill gets paid millions to gain the trust of his young & working class audience & then lie to them.

Penn & Teller got their big money Vegas and Viacom TV contracts after joining the right wing whack job Cato Institute corporate propaganda mill, funded by Exxonmobil, Monsanto, Walmart, etc. Many episodes of "Penn & Teller: Bullshit" are infomercials for Cato corporate funders.

"Bullshit" is owned by uber-Zionist & anti-Muslim bigot Sumner Redstone. Zionism=Palestinian genocide.

  • I love this vid!

We get an excellent view of Penn's thought processes. Awesome. So nice to know I am not the only one! LOL

  • Might be nice to hear someone talk about Dick Dale that knows WTF they're talking about.

  • Well it's important to me.

  • Doyle Bramhall II plays the same way. I did not know that about Dick. Thank you!

  • can we say "wake and bake?"

  • Totally man. He forgot what he was talking about like six times. Good shit.

  • lol thats what i was thinking

  • Have met & seen him play and he is awesome. One of the greatest performers I have ever had the pleasure to meet (& I met a lot when I was a photographer). Dick Dale is one of the nicest, most down to earth & most talented performers I have ever met / seen.

  • I'm definitely going to experiment with flipping my guitar over after hearing that. Not because I'm a great player, but just like Penn said, it'll definitely produce sounds that you wont hear anywhere else.

  • I disagree. Music can be very important...

  • how dick dale played music is not. when there is a picture of him next to master Bach he will be important.

  • Don't be a Tard.

  • no you dont be a retard. he did play like jimi hendrix exactly the same and nither of them will ever hold a candle to the math genious of any classical music. Music is important, but not ho it is played, and not this simple minded garbage.

  • To the idiots who gave me negatives.. I am DEFENDING Dick Dale you morons!

And to you Jesus.. obviously you are too superior to appreciate quality surf guitar, and you probably haven't even listened to Dick Dale.

Either way, it is your loss.. Tard.

  • That's cool. I didn't know that.

  • The tune is Miserlou- kick ass jam

  • Tell Dick to look at Miracle Mineral Supplement

  • Yeah who needs actual medicine when you can eat a berry and die in blissful hell.

  • Any product with "Miracle" in the advertisement is pretty much a guaranteed fraud.

  • Achieving fame by glomming on to the talent and accomplishments of others. Leave the geniuses of the world alone.

  • Do you even know who this guy is?

  • I saw Dick Dale in Lincoln, Nebraska in a bar that seats about 75 people about 4 years ago(the world famous Zoo Bar!). Fucking fantastic! He's the only guy who could take surf music to that level.

  • Not important note: The Dale/Hendrix thing. Hendrix did indeed restring his guitars for lefty...BUT... He could also play like Dick Dale when he had to (If he pawned his guitar and had to borrow someone elses) the thing is though. You couldn't tell the difference just by listening. Hendrix was a mutant....so is Dick Dale.

And the world is a better place because of it.

  • Take that, cancer! Hooray of Dick Dale!

  • Uh, hey Penn...that's the SAME way Hendrix played. Right-hand guitar left-handed upside-down with the thumb, etc. Yeah Jimi did that too. I don't know why you would specify a difference between Jimi Hendrix & Dick Dale AND GET IT WRONG. LOL! So, does this mean their playing was identical? Hell no! They're both great in their own ways.

  • Comment removed

  • no, what penn said is exactly right. hendrix strung his strings the proper direction after flipping the guitar over. Dick Dale, on the other hand plays with the light strings closest to his thumb. Him and bluesman Albert King play like that. You can't be taught that way because its so rare.

  • dick dale is the man

calling up the spirits is his best work

  • Dick Dale? I was out of the loop on the guy....never heard of him.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • I've been a Dick Dale fan since the 60's.

    Love his music!

Glad to hear his cancer fight is going well.

  • Penn knows the coolest people.

  • so true

  • I play left handed, I usually restring right handed guitars.

  • It's annoying to me that even reasonably intelligent people call chemical therapy "key mo". FFS people it's not keymocal its chemical! So call it "chemo" if you feel the need to shorten it.

  • good luck with that

  • Dick Dale still is the king of surf guitar.

  • hehe Penn said "boss"

  • wow. dick dale.

    i like link ray,

  • My mom took me to see Dick Dale when I was 8 at The Crest in Sacramento. She is the best mom and I still have the autographed ticket. I keep it in a baseball card album.

  • thats the way ive been playing for years i tried to play a left handed guitar strung properly and its a total mind fuck.

  • Penn, you seem to know a lot about guitars, maybe you should start playing!

  • I bought a cheap little off brand guitar about 10 years ago that has just sat there collecting dust. So I can relate to the lack of talent or practice :) Great vid.

  • His song Misirlou is used in Pulp Fiction if someone wanted to know.

  • I supposed I'd just have to grab a left handed guitar and then turn it around. I've done that and it's weird as shit.

  • LOL Penn is so random in this video.

Dick Dale is awesome and I need a few more of his CDs.

  • Wow, Penn, the more I listen to you, the more I realize that tell a story like an insane, rambling, jumping back and forth, stammering, fake laughing... and with no real point!

  • Penn sure does know alot about guitars for someone who doesn't play. I don't think that many people who don't, at the very least strum a guitar every once and a while, would know about the configuration of the strings and necks.

  • He does play........

  • "...I've often thought if I took up guitar..."

He implies in the video that he does not play guitar. Unless you have prior knowledge to the contrary.

  • Perhaps he means lead guitar or play guitar on a professional level. But he does play bass guitar after a two minute search on google. I have seen him use it on his show, too.

  • Oh. I see. He's probably just being humble. I can't help but think that he is probably better at it than he lets on too.

  • Anyone know where to email penn?

  • Try the internet?

  • Lefties will often play that way due to the fact that they usually start out borrowing a friend's right-handed guitar. The friend will usually NOT allow the lefty to restring it. I think McCartney also may have started that way.

  • He's alive still? I totally wouldn't have bet on that, but good on him. Doubt I'll make it to Vegas, but who knows.

  • Is that your backyard?

  • Long live Dick Dale and the mother fuckin Deltones!!!

  • Elizabeth Cotton played that way too. I mentioned that to someone and they replied: "Right like Jimi Hendrix."

  • I think Dick Dale also used thicker strings on his guitar to get his signature sound.

  • while it is true that hendrix did actually restring a right handed guitar for a left configuration, resulting in a unique sound contrived from the reversal of the string-pickup magnet calibration, he WAS KNOWN ON OCCASION TO PLAY A RIGHT HANDER THIS WAY. not to degrade dick in any way, but just to mention that jimmy had the same level of skill ;)

  • thats really facsinating Penn =)

I didnt know that--about how he played his guitar with the strings backwards

    very cool =)(

  • so boss? LOL

  • Dick Dale is the Chuck Norris of guitar players!

  • Chuck being a bigoted fundamentalist Christian, I'd imagine Penn wouldn't appreciate the comparison!;)

  • Dick Dale and the Deltones YAY

  • Wow! THE Dick Dale?! It's official: I'm completely jealous.

  • I was working at a Cigarette shop 10 years ago and this crack head walked in. We got to talking about my bass guitar. So i let the guy play it, and he did just that, he flipped it right over and whaled out some of the most awesome slap bass i have ever heard in person.

  • doesnt penn play bass guitar?

  • Man, I love Dick Dale and was devasted when I heard he had cancer last year.. Some great news at last. Dick beating cancer is proof that the Universe does still care about great music.

  • Wow, that's pretty awesome. Dick Dale is a pretty amazing guitar player.

BTW, I do think Jimi Hendrix played right handed guitars.

  • Sorry Penn. Hendrix did EXACTLY the same thing.

Now you'll have to make another correction video. LOL!

    No biggie, really though.

  • no dick dale didn't switch the strings around jimi hendrix did

  • Hendrix did not switch the strings. Go watch some Hendrix videos... the fat strings are on the bottom.

  • Nevermind... I was wrong. I just checked. For all these years I thought I saw the thick strings on the bottom. My bad.

  • :D hehe, musical instruments are not your strong side eh?

  • Actually, I work in music for a living. It's just been a while since I watched Hendrix play, and I probably switched my memories around with another or something.

  • Oh I see, I did not see the complete context of your comment, I understood you thought all guitars were that way. :) Silly me. Love your channel by the way.

  • I didn't even know he was still alive!

  • Dick Dale's colon had a hole in it that healed itself. I am convinced Dick Dale has super human powers. King of the Surf Guitar! Great video Penn.

  • Penn, you were in my dream last night. I had seen you amongst a lineup of people who tried to run for president but didn't make it. Also, your platform was not a shoe box but a fridge. I don't know man.

  • that is what hendrix did except he restrung the guitar backwards.

  • I coulda swore Jimmy just flipped the right handed guitar, too.

  • My father was another cancer king. Lost a lung, got skin cancer twice, and beat thyroid cancer as well. Unfortunately his ticker wasn't as strong as the rest of him.

The big miracle is modern medicine and too many folks take it for granted.

  • Ramen.

  • awesome, very good surf guitarist

  • I learned guitar the same way (right-handed guitar played left-handed) and got made fun of in high school for it. Not that I was any good anyway, but it's nice to know a talented guitarist can play that way.

  • i love dick dale

  • dick dale is god

  • Aweseome Vid, Dick Dale is awesome and I'm glad he is well. A very talented guitarist to say the least and "Misirlou" is a sweet tune, definantly classic in all it's sense.

  • I actually checked out some of Dick Dale's videos. It looks like he didn't flip the guitar upside down in them. He actually plays a left handed guitar strung upside down...so it has the low E on the bottom and High E on top.

  • Way to go Dick!

  • I too make sounds that no one else does because I play it wrong... I don't flip it over or anything, I just play it wrong, I mean really wrong, offensivly wrong

  • lol

  • Penn's yard is a lot less blurry than his house.

  • I read somewhere that he collects erotic art, so I assume that is why it is blurry - like there isn't some stuff on youtube that wouldn't offend WAY more people!

  • Emails from Dick Dale and Carlins Daughter. Very fucking cool. Very cool video, thanks for sharing.

    Long live the Dick.

  • Kris Roe of the Ataris also just flipped his guitar over.

  • miserlou is what he's famous for. he was a famous greek folk song, then dick dale made a surfer version, the some other guy changed it so it would work for pulp fiction, then the black eyed cocks fucked it all up

  • saw dick dale in somerville, mass in '94 (i think) at a little nightclub called johnny d's...amazing show, the man does shred...good to hear he's getting better

  • i think doyle bramhell plays like that

  • everything is important to someone :D

  • Long live Dick Dale!

  • it was pulp fiction, and yea, he rocks

  • thats awesomeness

  • dick dale is a legend, he reinvented the guitar

  • No. Hes just played it wrong.

  • ...and you talks wrongs :P

  • "Wrong" as in incorrectly but not badly. It is not "reinventing" its just doing it in an inefficient way.

  • I don't know if "inefficiently" is as good a word as, say maybe, "differently". To me, it's better if a left-handed guitarist is able to play a right-handed guitar because he or she can go to any gig and sit in with pretty much any band and not have to bring their "lefty" guitar.
