You do NOT need to purchase the Crest of Artorias to access the area beyond it. By beating the hydra you can circle around from the back on foot. The enemies in that area are dangerous and you don't need to go there for any loot or trophies, so I'd just avoid it.

I'm really glad you went back to light armor. That heavy armor is very burdensome. Though this molotovbombs guy has solid alternative advice.
So... you made a mistake in this episode. Saying "yes" to the pyromancer at Firelink, makes him disappear and become an enemy in Blighttown swamp. He's part of getting all pyromancies, but I'm not sure it's irrecoverable yet. Look it up.
You can pick up Havel's ring from undead burg which drastically improves your equipment load, so with your current lower endurance, can wear some pretty cool armours, and as you've just beaten Ornstein last, you can now buy his armour from the vendor sitting under the bridge at firelink shrine. It's one of the best medium armour sets in the game :)
A bit of advice on equipment burdens. There are various different equipment loads in the game, depending on your stamina load. Wearing armour 0-25% of max equip load is the fastest you can run and roll, then 25%-50% is most common amongst most players; you can get in a fast roll (this is pretty important), then there's the over 50% equip burden which makes you walk slow and gives a slow roll, as you saw when you had all the silver knight armour equipped. It's good to mix up various armour sets.
