  • BTW sorry for the double post made correction in my math. Anyway, there really isn't a comparison between the two lens s they are not close to the same lens, as you and most should already know! Thanks Dom!

  • Hey Dom I hope you're earning more now! I might guess you're making a little more these days then you were here! At todays standards six weeks well, that would only be around 250 bucks a week. I see the lens is 2300. US locally new! Here! Nice job as always thanks!

  • Dom can you remove the tripod collar from the lens body on the 70-200. Thanks

  • Thanks Dom!

Would you recommend this on a D7000 second hand (About $1500-$1700 Canadian) or stick to the cheaper, longer (But slower) 70-300? I do a fair amount of low-light which is a benefit of the 70-200, but the extra price and the size makes me a bit hesitant.

  • @Ishcoa if you can afford it.just buy it...you will remember me...

  • 3.5 to 5.6...nuff said. ;)

  • Hi Dom, Love your video's! I have one question: what camera(s) do you use?

I have a canon 1.6 crop camera and i am kind of building a "1.6 crop set" with tokina lenses, they are so sweet! However this makes me unable to upgrade to full frame in the future without renewing my lineup. I love the size and handyness of my crop sensor cam, but are there clear benefits with full frame? should i concider that while choosing lenses?

  • @philj212 yes you should consider that, but at the same time yu can always sell your efs lenses

  • Blurry and squishy! xD Loving your videos!

  • @padlockd very technical terms

  • Hi Dom, I watch most of your films and find them a great help, infact all of my nikon purchases have all come from your reviews. I just would like to ask your opinion about a filter system for the 28-105 nikon d lens. \should I buy the cokin p or the z pro for it as I have my skylight fiited all the time will the p system create any vignetting at the wide end.

    please advise

    many thanks Elliott

  • @E101966 always get the bigger and better filter, you will up grade lenses in the future and it is cheaper to buy bigger now than later

  • you know you shouldnt hold the camera body if you have such a huge lens on like that.

  • I saw you had a video of the sigma 70-200mm lens. other than Image stabalization and the Nikon name brand is there any other major differences?

  • @dethmerc sharpness, focus speed, weather proofing, less chromatic abberation

  • @dombower hi dom, i´m new on photography. i just bought a D3000. can i use this giant lens on my D3000?. thanks. nice video.

  • @alnoof77 sure can. it will be about 3 times the size and weight of your camera though

  • I used to think this lens was huge! Then i got the 500mm f4 vr:O) Im in edin so if you want to do a vid on it gimi a pm !

  • @quickshooter100 cool. just been doing a review of someones 100-400 canon lens. a 500 would be pretty sweet to review as well

  • Dom I'm concerned, dont you have to hold the lens and not the camera?

  • Hi Dom I just wonder does Nikon lens have image stabiliser or is it just on Canon lens and do you prefer to work on lenses that have IS or without.

  • @ClankyRochet nikons IS is called VR, vibration reduction

  • with that money i would get a d90 and sell my d3000

  • @rubiksfan2000 Personally, I'd rather invest in glass than bodies.

  • @AkiraMusic ya im just saying how expensive the lens is lol

  • How about a review for a mid range zoom 2.8.Thanks

  • Hi Dom.. Just asking if what`s the difference between F/2.8 and F/1.4??? thanks you

  • @touchmeover 2 stops, ie the difference between a 1/100th of a second or 1/25th of a second image, or another way is to say the same photo but with iso 800 or iso 3200

  • @Dombower.. i.c .. 2nd thing to ask you is, Whats the best zoom lens to buy?? the 70-200mm or the 70-300mm.. thank you again

  • @touchmeover Hey check out this video, hes explain everything about aperture value. Its call Digital Photography 1 on 1: Episode 14: Aperture Values

  • Hi Dom... Just asking if whats the difference betweeen the F/2.8 and F/1.4??? thank you

  • love your reviews: you're not a spoiled teenager with spotty/exaggerated knowledge of the product you're reviewing and photography in general, nor a stuck-up seasoned pro. Your reviews are in depth, yet quick and effective with great examples. You should get into teaching, if you're not in it already. Keep up the good work!

  • @ragnarocking thank you so much for your kind wordS!

  • Nice vid Dom, looking for something like this myself in the near future....:)

Random question: What's the song at the intro called? I've heard it before :P

    Write back!

  • @BluDevil93

The score to "American Beauty" comes to mind, but can't be certain.

  • @ragnarocking

matter of fact, I'm pretty certain it was. Recall the dancing bag scene and again at the end of the movie.

  • im selling a nikon 70-200 vr cause im switchin to canon. message me if interested

  • WOW,

im renting mine too so stoked.

  • you my friend are so much better than that QQQQcon moron

  • @Sqeener thank you for your kind words, but why so harsh to qqqqcon?

  • hey dom nice reviw and so on blah blah :)

    but

i now you are nikon user.

but there is one question to you:

im using 500d (batteriepack) and iam going to buy me the canon 70-200 2.8 IS

aaaaaaaaaaaaah DAMN soo f****** expensive :( but it i thing its ah fuuuu***** nice lense and i wont to use it at my main lens so do thing thats a good idea (main lens) i going to shoot portrait with umbrellas and so on (like you with speedlights)

    cheers

    matthias

  • good video, but very shaky and I'm getting dizzy. The 70-200 V1 is a great lens though.

  • @nicklaw8 are you spamming my videos, you have asked this stupid question twice. unless i get a good answer then ill block you.

  • Are you blind or what

  • What a monster of a lens. These are made for the professional. I wouldn't want to carry one around when traveling.

  • canon 70-200

  • Very important to remember that this lens only manages 140mm or so at 10 feet away, not 195mm like the original version. At 4.6 feet the lens drops to 128mm with a 36% loss of reach.

  • @FotoLord42 EH? what are you on about? it is 200mm all the way. Think you must be thinking about some other lens.

  • Sorry, here are the facts:

Nikon 70-200 VR 1 is 190mm at 5 feet minimum focus.

Nikon 70-200 VR II is 128mm at 4.6 feet minimum focus.

    This info is well known.

  • @FotoLord42 clearly not. but thanks for informing us.

also your first comment is thus wrong, as this video is the old lens not the vr2, Look at the shape. the new lens is more straight and doenst bulge half way, That info is well known.

  • does it happen to all lenses?

  • does what happen?

  • this is the old version the new one does that

  • I like how u refer to the 70-200 as "the expensive lens" and "the giant lens" :)) love ur vids :D

  • Regardless though... I don't think you could find anyone in photography who doesn't want the 70-200.

Also in my opinion I think it is the sexiest lens ever made lol. The vr version that is... not the newer vrII.

  • @martinaee have to agree with you on the sexiest. the new one looks crap compared to this one

  • Straight off the bat I don't think the comparison between those two lenses is anywhere near equal.

  • big lens and .........expensive lol i love how you paused!!

  • about the weight of the lens putting strain on the lens-camera connection....

Is the lens so heavy that carrying a camera equipped with the lens slung over the neck or shoulder damaging to the camera?

  • prob not. as long as it is on a good camera, not on something small like a d90 or below

  • Dude, that's why there's a thing called ISO button, you are comparing two different lenses

  • thats the point of comparing!

  • what are your thoughts on the sigma 70-200mm?

  • check out my video and you will see

  • I am not sure whether comparing focusing speed of one lens at 18mm and the other at 200mm is very fair.

  • At 1:18 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA you just waited for the hood to shut up :P awesome dom :P

  • i can get my hands on 1 used in great condition for £800

    is that a good deal?

  • i have this lens i just bought it last thursday even expensive i think its worth it!!yahoo!!!

  • there is a lot of envy in the other comments... haha Great video and hope you enjoyed the tele!! :)

  • hahaha your such a fucking loser. bet you dont even own a camera

  • the difference in exposure was the point of the image, using the widest possible aperture on each lens to show the difference in brightness (Duuuuggghh!) tripod.. who uses those!

your a total cock that clearly knows nothing about photography, and i suspect you are gay but still pretend to be straight.

  • I look forward for you to review the new 18-200 VR II and 70-200mm VR II. "-)

  • how about nikon 80-200 2.8 AFS? many pepole said that this lens more sharp than 70-200 2.8 VR, have u ever tried?

  • that one got discontinued very quickly, i would have wanted to go for that but once the 70-200vr came they stopped making it and it is a bit rare. the older version 80-200mm D is very slow. and neither have vr

  • af speed sigma 70-200mm Hsm macro II

This is the name of the video.

    Keep up the good videos.

  • Can u please do a review on sigma 70-200mm f2.8 . Some people say it's faster and better that the nikon one.

  • its pronounced B-o-k-u-h

  • not like bouquet of flowers?

  • Actually it's pronounced 'bo' (as in the beginning of bottle) 'ke' (as in the beginning of kettle), so I'm afraid you're both wrong. That's how the Japanese pronounce it, and since it's their word, the 'correct' way is their way. Like any word however (e.g. 'Paris'), foreigners inevitably coin easier (and less embarrassing) ways to say them. In this way, none of the foreign ways of pronouncing bokeh can be said to be better than any other.

  • both work. u can pronounce it boke-eh as well as bok-uh.

Personally i do it bokeh, never heard bokuh.

    tomato, tomato..

  • when would a monopod be helpful, in what situation? and how does it help anyway? so your 18-200 have a little bit of dust after 2 years...once we get it cleaned, how long will the dust get back? how much does the service costs you know? all lenses will get dust inside eventually?...just got the 70-200mm f/2.8 :D

  • The dirt, hair, dust can get around the zoom range and the focus ring...what do we use to get rid of it? you notice this on your other lens?

What do you use to clean the front lens element? just your breadth and a micro cloth?

  • yes but so far i have had the 18-200 for 2 years and there is a bit of dust inside but it never shows up on any images. to get rid of that sort of stuff you have to send the lens away to professionals

also try to never use my breath to clean.

  • great video, i have several questions for you...people use a monopod for this lens with the camera D90...is a monopod good for taking night photography with long exposure? the monopod is only for morning shooting only or what? from the look at the monopod...i don't know why people would use it cuz it seems it doesn't have like legs to hold the camera still right?

  • mono pod for long exposures??? NOOOOOOO!

mono = 1 one leg is not stable. get a tripod

  • Did you say 15 pounds or 50 pounds?

  • 50 pounds

  • Whats the name of the song in the beginning?

  • Cool. One misleading bit though, people might think you mean that when a battery pack is added, the stress on the mount is reduced.

  • Totally correct! The stress is _not_ reduced on the lens flange by adding a battery pack. It might help balance in handheld ..but does nothing re: the strain..as mentioned. The real secret..wait for it..A TRIPOD! That's why Nikon so thougtfully included a tripod mounting collar! Cheers!

  • all i said was that with the extra battery pack it feels more evenly weighted.

  • Sorry mate! Must have missed it in the VID. BTW..thanks for the great VIDs and your Website is Very PRo! Cheers!

  • thanks

  • I don't get the comments about weight, with preparation its a non issue. A couple of sets of weights three times a week will stand you in good stead.

In fact if you have an exercise regime anyway lighter lenses can be too light to control properly.

  • think about carying it around from 10 am untill 10pm for a wedding! or running along with a sports event like a marathon (i did this last week for the edinburgh marathon and it would have been a nightmare with this lens not only for its weight but also trying to cycle with this monster hanging from my neck would not have been nice.

  • To tell you the truth,i didn't try it in fast action things yet! Generally speaking,in portraits and stationary objects...it's really awesome..colours,sharpness and the bokeh effect looks very natural!! It's heavy and build quality is awesome, sharpness wide open is awesome and when stopepd to f4 it's incredibly sharp!I'll keep u posted when i start shooting fast actions!Regarding the AF speed ...it's really adequate for me...so far :)

  • since i couldn't afford that lens,i went witht he other choice...80-200 f2.8D AF...beleive me.nothing less than stunning!!

    FI u r thinking of a f2.8,consider this one!!

    NIce review by the way

    Keep shooting!

  • I have got a friend who had that lens and it made great photos especially for wild life, but he got really frustrated with it when trying to follow any action even at a slow jog pace the lens couldnt keep up with the people. how have you found it or are you using it mostly for portrait and wildlife?

  • dom can you tell me where abouts in edinburgh you got the lens from?

  • I tried to leave a message. but youtube wont let me leave dotcoms on the text responses so i have put the details in the descriptions

  • Great! Thanks Dom, do i get a discount if i mention your name? lol

  • 18-200 vr vs. 70-200vr ? do you really think is fair ? very good video

  • i know the 18-200 is so much better! i mean imagin restricting yourself to just 2.9x zoom and only having the closes focusing point 1.5m away insted of just 50cm. Oh and dont get me started on the price! no comparison really

oh but the f.stop is a bit better....

  • you funny... let you just compare between a speed train and a speed car, they both got engine and they both can go to a speed of 200 kmh, but they are not in the same category.

In this case one lens is a pro lens , F stop of 2.8 all the way, and the other one is a super zoom lens

  • I think your analogy is a bit off, i would say it is more like comparing a Ford people carrier that can do 200mph against say a Ferrari that can also do 200mph.

    not cars and trains.

  • you cann't compare between the lenses they are not in the same category,

  • yes you can.... and I did. they are both in the <200mm vr AF-S category

  • Really enjoyed this video Dom. I can't believe the size of that thing! I was very impressed at the image brightness the 70-200 took over the 18-200. What was the f number of the 70-200 when you took those? The lens is way out of my current price range but it's on my wish list .... along with a tele-converter for it

  • they were both at their widest to for the 70-200 it was at f2.8 while the 18-200 at 70 was at f5 and at 200mm was at f5.6

  • i pretty sure that the "normal" option is what deals with the left right motion when it detects panning. the "active" is for really shacky situations like if you're in a car or if you are moving in all directions up, down left right etc.....

hope you get to buy a lens for your self,

    nice vid

  • Hey Dom can i ask you where u rented the lens?

Im an edinburgh resisdent too...and its just good to know for future if someone asks me for a beast of a lens i know where to go lol :)

Another great video, ohh and good luck with your movie job

  • ohh and isnt the 70-200 lens an fx lens so its a bit closer shot right??

  • and one more thing.. did you use a different camera for each of the lenses or did you use the d300 for both??

  • 18-200 is on the fuji s5 pro, the 70-200 on the d300,

both have the same size sensor

  • it is but all lenses be they fx or dx still display their focal range in 35mm terms. so they efectivly should be the same. However the 70-200 seems a bit closer but i think that is to do more with its closeness of focus compared to the 18-200

  • is part two up?? i tried searching for it..... couldnt find it.

  • was working on it last night but still need to finish it. will be up by friday

  • Nice one Dom! That's a sick lens.:X
