  • @kiiminki Toto clip... not Toto clips

  • Jesus he looks so young here! Typical awesomeness from the Sy Fill. No wonder he was the only good replacement for Keith Moon....

  • ma va questo è stefano dorazio che strazio.. ah ah aha ah

  • I am the proud owner of this drumset. I'm glad to have finally found a vid of him playing them. This solo is amazing!!!

  • Totally got it

  • He´s one of the best since he was 18 in 801 along Phil Mazanera and Brian Eno!!!!!!!, just listen East of Asteroid

  • TSSSS

EN SUS TIEMPOS DE ORO ERA UNA BESTIA TOCANDO

    HAHAHA

  • ah, so he was a knob back then aswell

  • Anyone got any idea what size cowbell that is on the kick drum? I assume it's a Zildjian.

  • DRUMS DRUMS DRUMMERS DRUMMING DRUMIST DRUM BEAT DRUMMERFEST DRUM SOLO DRUM CIRCLE DRUM KIT DRUM SET DRUMTINI DRUMMERISTIC DRUMMAHDRUMATIC DRUMCICLE DRUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMS CRAASSSHHH!!!. SIMON, CARTER, BUDDY, BONZO, NEIL, DENNIS,MANU,RAYFORD,JEFF,DAVE, PHIL,CHESTER,ANIMAL,LENNY,SHEILA,TERRY,DOM,ROD,IAN,GINGER,CHAD,STEVE,ALEX,ME, YOU ,AND EVERYONE WHOS PLAYS DRUMS,,,,,DRUM MACHINES HAVE NO SOUL....and one last thing, DRUMMERS CAN PLAY ANYWHERE AT ANYTIME ON ANYTHING ..the key of what?? who cares! lol

  • This shit is just like mindless wanking on a guitar.

  • This guy can't be human :O

  • pimplad paustilkshfshfshytyudoguotmami9jrweijyrio eso es lo que se escucha arre xdd

  • Wow, Simon is on fire here!

  • after the first 40 seconds jazz guys would say "he has nothing left to say", meaning he keeps playing the same thing...

  • @PattyWhomperOFFICIAL well... but that's a fact.. it might sound a bit awkward in a way.. but i don't want to say that this is a bad solo or something like that..

  • @PattyWhomperOFFICIAL What, like the jazz guys in the Buddy Rich band who had nothing but praise for Phillips on 'Dancing Men'? This a solo performed at a clinic, mostly for the benefit of other drummers, playng some of his familiar cues like 'Space Boogie". But the best way to judge a drummer is in the way he/she plays a song, and Phillips has always brought the songs he plays to life like no other.

  • I like how he rotates/tilts his head, when he hits the cymbals. It looks like as if he's doing it with his head :)

    Awesome solo btw!

  • simon philips is the chuck norris of drums....amazing

  • @drummerboy11695 so would that mean neal peart is the bruce lee of drums,,,???? lol! lol!,, j/k!! yea,,simon is a freaking monster!! any drummer worth his salt should know simon phillips is one of the 5 greats!!

  • sounds like this guy and eric singer came from the same mold.

  • sounds a little like billy cobham

  • awesome = simon

  • In 1985 I know my drumming skills were less than good.

Simon's kit configuration is virtually the same today with the addition of octobans and a gong drum.

Saw him in '81 or '82 with Jon Anderson, and he was awesome back then.

He has a unique style all his own.

  • Listen to "Tears For Fears" Sowing the Seeds of Love album that is Simon!

  • Dudes ever hear of this drummer?

    Just type and search:

Paul Wandtke Vic Firth full live drum solo Mandeville, Louisiana I stumbled across this drum solo video via Vic Firth's website.

  • Last time I saw him he played for John Entwistle, not a bad gig. It's been awhile, but I'm sure he still plays with the best musicians in the world. Pay attention bc!

  • ...goodness.

  • At the :17 second mark some dude is trying to touch Simon with his peepee and film it...probably to put it on youtube. Not cool.

  • simon is a sick, sick, sick monster drummer, always has been and i suspect he always will be.

this is a great old video of him, thanks for posting it!

check out 801 Live with Simon and his friend Brian Eno, that's the record that brought him to my attention a long time ago.

    much respect!

    ~lox

  • Damn, his hair is so dristracting, I can't concentrate on the stuff he plays. :(

Anyway his dynamics are incredible. He sure can beat the hell out of those drums. Some so called metal drums can hide themselves.

  • Great drummer, like Cozy played in so many bands - Toto ,the Who ,M.s.g. ,Russ ballard etc. i also saw him play with Toyah around 1982

  • MASSA

  • Ele tava novinho nessa fita... legal muito bom mesmo!

  • Did some good work on Mike Rutherford's (of Genesis) solo album, Smallcreep's Day, in 1980...

  • played on Schenker's first album also, awesome.

  • Played some great stuff on Gary Moore's Back on the Streets solo album, too.

  • Say......I've got Simon on an L. Shankar album (Indian violinist) produced by Zappa called "Touch Me There"....anyone else heard it? That has some INSANE double kick playing there.....and it's pre Tama era Simon too!!

  • you're just afraid of his hair. \nlm

  • listen to Jeff Beck's "There and Back" album and/or Stanley Clarke's "Rocks, pebbles and Sand". Simon is drumming on both of these.

    Some old skool for ya!

  • @photorams65

    Great album....space boogie is amazing.

Funny thing about star cycle is that many people credit Simon when it is actually Jan Hammer on the drums for that track.

Check out "801 live" track called "east of asteroid" to see how good he was at 18.

  • Very, very tight drumming!

  • Institution!

  • wow nice solo

  • Nothing nice about that solo, just plain WICKED!!!!!

    ThanksDruman

  • Simon Phillips is another one of those percussionists that nobody has heard of. It's these 'nobodies' that hail every metal drummer since Led Zeppelin to be the BESTEST!!.

    Makes me chuckle.

  • What's funnier is that you never realize just how many albums they've played on and you didn't even realize it unless you actively followed their careers.

Simon Phillips is a great example of that. He's been around quite a while.

  • When you say "nobody", do you just mean you? At all the music jams I wonder down to, his name is brought up all the time. And my old teacher idolizes him.

  • I was being sarcastic with reference the the Metal crowd or, more to the point, the nu-metal crowd who just listen to thrash bollocks and think that's drumming and know only the handful of drummers in those circles. They are the 'nobodies' I'm referring to. Is that clear enough?

  • Sarcasm is hard to detect on the internet... I don't spend that much time with internet grammer. But yes that is clearer, however, its up to the peoples choice who they think is best. Right?

  • i have one question...whats up with the 80's and amazing drum solo's and shitty shitty shitty music.....not all of it's shitty...but for the most part the 80's embarasses me as a musician.

  • Heheh it seems odd don't it?

I think the thing is, the players go where the gigs are, whatever the music style is. In the 80s that was just the sound.

  • one word - monster!

  • wow...

  • Wow, he is the daddy!!!

  • 2m-2m45s is awesome

  • cool, wish I was this good.

  • Wow

    !!!

  • I wonder what a a brand new tribe discovery would make of this if Simon set up his rig? Would they see him as a god or a devil? Especially nowadays when Simon does "talking drums"...just a thought

  • shit......

  • radiosant shut up. you and I both know he's done some better stuff but you don't have to be a total flamer about it!

  • not being a flamer, just offering an opinion. I think Simon's an instance of a drummer whose best work is contained within songs, not in solos. If anything, I'd rather hear a drummer play more interesting fills within the confines of music than play drum solos.

  • I agree and disagree with both of you. I think that the artistry and cohesion in this solo exists in its overwhelming physicality. No, it does not have a discernable beginning, middle, and end that logically connect, but he was drumming past that. It's more like a sustained explosion of heavy hitting. I think it was genius, in a way that takes more than one listen to apprehend.

  • Musi być okropnym istnieniem wy prowadzicie .

  • Hehe. Online translator?

  • LOVE that groove around 1:40, it's just grooves like hell. SP rule!

  • Simon and his Artstar IIs! And those Clear Ambassadors. I always loved his sound.

  • I liked it.

  • 1:40 to 2:15 is a Groove if you couldn't understand that then your ears are not for DRUM.

  • HE IS WAY FAST

  • simon phillips is the man!

  • I really thought this was kick ass for 1985. I see Phillips doing some things I see Donati and Mangini doing now. His drumming would kill in the right power trio.

  • Best Simon Phillips solo I saw was the Zildjian clinic at The Venue, London Oct 25th 1983. It had everything - great funky groove throughtout culminating in a blistering double bass finale.

  • Well yea steve smith and Dennis chambers are two of the greatest talents in drumming and two of my favorite players.Simon is also one of my favorite players.Simon phillips,Steve smith and Dennis are all three incredible but they are also all very different musicians.

  • i have steves dvd drumset technique / history of the u.s. beat , and dennis' dvd in the pocket, both great, i learned alot from them, peace

  • yes that Dennis Chambers video is incredible.I have seen clips of Steves instructional video and thats definitely on my watch list along with a few others.

  • youtube*com/watch?v=keOylXMoZ2k

Simon's latest drum solo with Toto

  • Carter Beauford really is the best. You may think fast is good but really keeping a beat is alot easy within faster time signatures. Also the other thing wrong is that this constant speed ruins any egzistance of a rhythm let alone syncapation or a groove. If anything Carter Beauford does all that with none of this fast beat crap. I'd even rate Chad Smith over this if anything else.

  • Then you are as ignorent as can be.Every great musician knows Simon is one of the greatest session drummers in the world.Yes Carter beaford is great but he is no where near as good of a player.Oh and comparing Chad Smith to Simon is like comparing Ringo Starr to Dennis chambers. Simon has way more control over time signatures and plays some incredible poly rhythm grooves in his solos.Show us Carter soloing over a 33/8 time signature then will talk.

  • Is it ignorant to have your own opinion? Most of his solos/fills are basically the same the only thing i've heard which is distinctively different was "rosanna" yes it does a have groove, but in comparison to the rest of simons stuff it just gets boring for me. Yes he is good at what he does, just its all the same for me. Carter Beauford is just more interesting to watch imo.

  • Well if you like carter beaford better as a musician thats fine however his is not a better player then Simon. He is one of the most incredible drummers of all time.He is so great of a player you could never know every thing he can do since there is so much under the hood.

  • Knowledgable is are key word here.

  • Oh and sorry but Neil Pert in 1985 was not playing like this. This solo is amazing especailly for 1985 and Simon is a legendary drummer.Neil is among the best rock drummers but simon is among the overall greatest and every knowlegebale musician knows that well.

  • you're all wrong. to this day keith moon is still the best....and to be honest simon phillips is a very close second. who the fuck is NP??

  • Keith moon is not even close to a master drummer. He was very sloppy live and had the intellegence of a block of wood.Simon on the other hand is one of the greatest all time drummers and he is one of those drummers that people will look back on in 100 years and still be amazed.

  • sorry simon blows away NP.

  • Simon IS good! That`s why NP chose him to appear in the BR tribute video! But in my opinion,Peart IS the Drum God! No one is near as FAST or as Precise as NP! He may not be the most talented drummer ever,BUT he IS the most DEDICATED!!

  • fuck he is insane lol. Awesome solo

  • I agree, buddy rich was the man...he did just as good if not better with less of a drum set. Lets face it the man played a double roll with one hand endlessly

  • Hasn't got a lot of cymbals though.....

  • Why's he got so many drums????

  • he has so many drums because the bigger the better. and it sounds better

  • Guys, every great drummers such as M. Portnoy, S. Phillips, T. Bozzio, N. Peart and Buddy Rich has their own style!!! Cannot compare all between!!

    They're fabulous!

  • don't forget keith moon now.

  • You cant compare ANY drummers, they are as individual as finger prints.

  • You can't match anyone with Buddy Rich he was in a class of his own

  • What the fuck are you saying?Simon matches Neal easily and so does many other drummers

  • ***it's Neil, and i think that a drum off between those 2 would be wicked.

  • good drummer indeed, but no, he can't match Buddy Rich or Neil Peart (those 2 are the greatest).

    Rest in peace Buddy!

  • Simon Phillips is amazing no doubt there.. but He can't match up to the greatest of all drummers ever to walk the earth... Buddy Rich (may you rest in peace Buddy, rest in peace).

  • hey man buddy is an amazing drummer and my number 2 fav drummer.

me fav is mike portnoy theres no way simon can match him. even tho simonj is an amazing role model and player.

  • Agreed

  • This guy was originally a session guy but played with loads of bands, Judas Priest and Hawkwind I think....

  • lmafo, your so off your rocker.. sound quality is generated, its from an old 85 vhs tape. but to say a guy, who's a great player, went on to do tours with 'the who' aside from many other numerous musical accomplishments, sucks.. is beyond entertaining. if you weren't such a racist cock lover with such a huge semen investment in your brain, (now coming out your mouth) id have to fuck you while you sleep and leave a note...

  • LOL - So Simon must have sucked when he was in AC/DC, Dio and so many others, too. Some people should just understand before they speak. If I'm not mistaken, Simon does go back to the 70s with Judas Priest, and probably even further than that! He has such a killer funky style. I love it.

  • He must have sucked when he was 16 playing drums in Jesus Christ Super Star, which by the way is one of the most demanding musicalls anybody could possibly do on a musical level

  • Yeah indeed..(Y) he's one of the best drummer in the world. Triton why don't you try it by yourself and discover how difficult it is to drum like that. ass

  • LOL!!!! you are soooo right man it's not even funny.

  • I bought his signature drums series "Tama swingstar" set back in 85. what ever happened to him?

  • The tour was wittily named 'The Wizard in Oz' & he was promoting the new TAMA series. While chatting afterwards I told him I still liked the sound of my Pearl Kit; his even more witty response was to sign my memento "To my Pearla Mate, TAMA Rules OK! Simon Phillips." It's still my most treasured autograph! Thanks for posting this vid, Rock On!

  • I saw Simon on a Clinic tour Down Under, his playing absolutely blew everyone out! Admirable, awesome and inspirational man and his drums were tuned to perfection and sounded brilliant! What impressed me most was his helpful & down-to-earth personality; something most famous people often lose very quickly.

  • awesome....

  • lol..I was at this clinic, it was Zildjian Day 1985 in Dallas. Those were birch Tama Artstar drums, thats why they sound so punchy, not like the muddy sounding maple drums everyone is playing nowdays.

  • He Is Fast On The Toms

  • Miss the big drum kits of the 80's. Can anyone tell me why the guy from Cinderella also used this same set up?

  • Saw him with Pete Townsend's Deep End Band, great drummer

  • The tuning on his snare sounds fckin awesome!

  • I like the tuning of his kit. That snare is nice with quite a deep shell. I heard something resembling Alex's Hot for Teacher drum intro around 5:15.

  • Yes... Simon Phillips is pure pleasure to hear.

    What a really great musician.

  • Was this from a clinic or was he playing with someone at the time?

  • Damn!

  • O-o eat your vegetables kids and practice your rudiments. its all about stick control!

  • That chick is good.

  • One of the most under-rated GREAT drummers out there. EVERY drummer should know his name. Along with Jeff Beck, his work on Jon Anderson's "Animation" is also phenomenal. Yet most new young drummers have never even heard of him!

  • m favorite drummer veer

  • good skills and technique its just the first min and a half gets boring

  • brian bennett one the uk.s best known drummers

  • that's playing with taste.

  • Hey I saw some Moonie in there!

  • I feel the drums sound good. I think the quality of the drum sound is there, but the old video sound and it's lack of quality is not bringing it true.

  • Check Simon out of Jeff Beck "There and Back" CD.

    He was very young then.

  • herhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • check out simon on the whos live double album, powerful stuff..big countrys buffalo skinners is one of his best studio recordings..me thinks!

  • You can hear were Tony Royster Jr. has his inspiration from.

  • Damn, i enjoyed this solo so much more than any Portnoy's latest

  • Wasn't really floored by this....kind of boring.

  • Yeah hes a good drummer but his drums sound like crap. :/

  • its more the old video and its generated quality that sounds bad by the standards your probably used to now.

i dont think his drums sound that bad, the video's sound quality is self has a lot to do with it.

  • i wouldn't say the drumkit sounds like crap, just the sound quality

  • wow! that´s a solo! power, rithym, presence, style, quickness. one of the best, Mr. Phillips.

  • he is an amazing drummer, had played with many bands...now plays with on of my fav bands TOTO ;)...he is amasing live

  • HES' AWESOME , NO DOUBT THERE AT ALL. MORE TOMS' FOR DIFFERNT' HIGH & LOW PITCHES'!sOME PPL JUST CRACK ME UP HAVE TO BE A TOTAL CRITIC. hE ROCKS', WHAT WRONG. JEALOUS YOU CANT' PLAY THAT KILLER!! APPECCIATTE THE FREAKIN TALENT! TY VM DRUMAN 44!PEACE & ROCK & ROLL!

  • Is it me or do these drums sound awful? Snare sound is dreadful. Maybe he lost his hearing (sorry).

  • yo this guy is the king of triplets

  • listen even if he is an ugly dude...he is really fucking good at drums and umm....that means that his looks dont matter lmao but ummm who says there are too many toms...thats dumb...that is just his style of playing......im sure he doesnt care what you think about his drumset

  • too many toms

  • Mediocrity those who lack soul!

  • master !!

  • he´s one ugly dude..

  • I love how you've noticed the looks of him .. fag

  • yeesssssssssssssssss a fuckin good drummerrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • he played on judas priest sin after sin and the saturday night fever soundtrack, and also msg.

  • he's a God!

  • He's so great and sometimes overlooked.

  • WOW !!

  • Didn't this kat play with The Who on one of thier many farewell tours? He's awesome anywhooo.

  • Yeah, he did.

  • His in TOTO right now. (since 91). He´s still awsome when he plays solo at theire concerts
