Ironically, you may need to study old French books for things written by the missionaries. they recorded all daily events.
Our people were (and are) very good at fishing. They build amazing sea-worthy canoes and figured out pretty fast that a sail will take them further, faster. Chances are they met whalers from Europe long before anyone "Discovered" the Foggy Place.
