this airport should be demolished after tap-727 crash in 19 november1977.funchal airport not capabale recieving big planes.no any decent airlines fly to this rotten place.
Went to Madeira in 2003, didn't know about the peculiar approach to the airport.
sat on the left, window seat, I'll call it "interesting" to see so much green fill the cabin window, and su much buffeting so close to the ground.. Never seen so many people sigh of relief and give standing ovation for successfull landing , It's a real roller coaster ride in at time.
My wife and I went on honeymoon in Madeira 25 years ago. Only the second time I'd ever flown and our plane landed at Funchal using the same approach :-)
The runway was a *lot* shorter back then and we were warned not to be alarmed by the noise of the engines going into reverse thrust on landing. It was an interesting experience for me - but I've never been nervous of flying since! We'll be celebrating our wedding anniversary in Madeira later this year - I look forward to the landing again!
When the wind is crossed, blowing strong from the sea. It's time to separate men from children. It's time to show that you are a true racer and not someone who just flies right by using the AP.
not really! It`s good and safe! If you follow all the safety golden rules! The scenery is great, much better than seen here. Mountains to the west go up to 6000 ft, the scenery is even greater if you`re coming from the west or northwest.
@jardimnuno always remember : a rule can never take in consideration the infiniteness of unpredictable problems that can happen, therefore there will be dead people in this airport at a certain moment
@nextofkin99 I'm a pilot, and just like the author of this video said, closing down this airport will do far more damage than it does good to the island. Not to mention, precision approaches and the training of pilots minimizes incidents and accidents, so you have no need to fear my friend. We will get you to your destination safe and sound!
You should take a look at Tegucigalpa if you're looking for reasons to shut down an airport..
I'd really like to land here someday... but not with my 747!
@jonstewartforprez I'm not sure if you know, but when the runway was augmented, to prove it was capable for heavy aircrafts, a 747 landed here, using the runway 05. The first and, probably, only 747 to land here, and I saw it. It was beautiful, the only time I saw a 747 and she was landing in Madeira! After the 747, a 777 also landed here and they made a big deal about it, but if the 747 lands here, so does the 777, right? Anyway, just to say you don't need to be scared of landing a 747 here.
@mesamarshall I forgot to answer your question about 777 and 747. Typically, it would follow that a 777 can land if a 747 could, but that's not always the case. There are many other factors that can go into play: weight, wind (and thus ground speed), runway weather conditions, etc. So it's not a definite "given" that a 777 can land if the 747 could, though it is a great chance that it will. Hope that clears it up!
@jonstewartforprez I had to split the comment in two, sorry. i needed to conclude by saying: You don't need to be afraid of landing a 747 here, I just hope you don't have a stage fright! The whole island will come to see!
@mesamarshall Really, now that's interesting! Landing a 747/777 on a shorter than usual runway can actually be considered a bit easier because the low fuel weight allows for better braking. Taking off I would imagine would be more nerve wracking due to the added fuel weight. But to be honest, I've always flown "heavy" aircrafts, and have never landed one at a shorter than usual runway length. With Kai Tak an (outdated) exception, they usually don't give heavy aircrafts these colossal approaches!
It's very intresting to see landing from this perspective..! Good Job!! Bravo..!

You do not know the Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, especially the approach for runway 02R.

I was told that pilots need a special certification for Madeira, can anybody confirm or deny?
svandamme76 6 months ago
@svandamme76 That's correct. This is a captains only landing and they need a special certification.

'Retard' means that they have to put the engine throttles on idle and pull the nose up a bit for touchdown...

(i forgot this) the turbbolence you experienced is normal for because of the mountains at one side an the other the ocean
even in a clear day with no wind you will always experience a little of turbolence
