Lovely! I´m from the other side of the world (Argentina). Many years ago a downloaded (making a mistake) Blue Rodeo`s song "runaway train", but I was looking for another "runaway train" song, but after listening that song and then alI the discography I became Blue Rodeo and jim`s fan. Next november I`ll will flight to Canada for my honeymoon and I hope I can find a show available!
There WAS a version of this from the Juno's in the early 90's where the Skydiggers and Blue Rodeo blew the roof off with this song....Bob Wiseman was still in the band....This is good, but that was the best version I've ever heard of this song. I believe it was the night Ian and Sylvia were inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame. CBC probably has it.
That's how pros do it. Flub the chords a bit as Jim did, and you keep right on going. NEVER STOP. Get through it and then do it again if you want to, but keep it going, as he did. Real pro.
I wanna see the posting of the version from the Juno's that featured The Skydiggers that was an allstar cast that rocked the tune. Now put that version out and see how many new people discover it.
Actually, Jim & Suzie weren't on the Junos with this song. Perhaps you are thinking of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Induction where they sang it to induct Sylvia Tyson in the Hall of Fame.
Unfortunately we don't own that footage and aren't permitted to reair it. However, it was so wonderful, we asked them to recreate it in our studio lounge for your listening enjoyment.
It's great how we continue to learn!!! I loved the We Five version because it was the only one I knew of. I had no idea Sylvia Tyson wrote it. The Chatham-Kent region should be proud. Not to mention Robertson Davies.
The original was written by Sylvia Tyson and sung by her duo Ian and Sylvia. The band We Five remade the song the next year (1965) and had the biggest hit with it, while also slightly modifying the lyrics. Since then, several bands have covered it, including The Bangles.
So cool. Two great artists, Cuddy and Oh Susanna, doing a huge Canadian classic: You Were on my Mind by Sylvia (Fricker) Tyson, half of one of Canada's greatest folk act, Ian and Sylvia. A big hit for the Wee Five. I was into the Beatles, Who, Stones at the time but I absolutely loved this song, both versions. Cuddy and Sue really do it justice. Both are such great singers and performers. 5 stars even if Cuddy grabbed the wrong chord a time or two. True professional...keep going. Excellent.
OK....Jim Cuddy is one of the two frontmen from "Blue Rodeo" An awsome Canadian band. Suzi Ungerlighter (not sure if I spelled that right) Goes by the stage name "Oh Susanna " Wonderful singer / songwriter. Check out her album "Johnstown" it's a few years old now but still send shivers up my spine.
Well, but it's not the way Sylvia wrote it, but the way that the We Five performed it, at least as far as the melody and arrangement goes. Check out the recently posted video of Sylvia & Ian from their reunion, where Sylvia finally sings the lead melody & Ian sings harmony (her original harmony line forms the basis for the We Five lead).
A friend of mine was touring the CBC in Vancouver and when he went to the washroom Jim Cuddy was in there cleaning his cowboy boots. He is the real deal. Oh Susanna rocks!
I added to my FB as I loved the cover..Thanx for posting !

The original is good. This spirited cover, with a more spartan but superb blend of the two voices and guitar is even better, in my view.

They've given their version a very 2000s feel. No folkiness to it. How did they do that?

talent and awesomeness?
virgilcain 3 years ago
Yes. And not that folkiness is bad. I think the a cappella ending does it. And they don't let up on the tempo ever.
