I remember the Luling Destrehan Ferry disaster. I was 19 and living in Luling. I remember the sound of the helicopters flying low over my house and the people standing on the levee for days and days. the sight of the ferry upside down in the river. I had crossed the river onthe ferry many many times, but this was unbelievable. All those people, and the cars and trucks sliding off the ferry. It was and still is so very sad. It is too bad that more people aren't aware of what happened that morning
Nice touch, the LSU TIGERS National Champions t-shirt. I understand the rest of the story goes that when he came up to the surface, he had to dive down again below the water, because the spinning propellers of the tanker were right upon him. So he took a deep breath and swam underneath the propellers. He surfaced again and made his way to the bottom side of the capsized ferry. I could not imagine what life would have been like if he hadn't been the greatest survivor of the 20th Century! Love You
I lost my father and uncle in this accident. I was only 13 months old when this happened. I have no memory of my father but it still brings tears to my eyes.

That's so scary. My grandpa used to work at one of the plants. Im not sure which one. He lives (and lived at the time) on Kinler St (next to Gassen St). I never knew this happened until i came to you-tube and typed in "luling"
Honestly I lived in Montz, a lot of my life and never new anything about it! No body ever talks about and I guess if you weren't around when it happened then you never get told about it...
I remember the Luling ferry disaster. We lived on Gassen street, not far from the ramp. My father was working at Monsanto then, and had just gotten off the graveyard shift. I was 14 years old, but even then I was very sheilded from the accident site, and from talk about it. Later, I remember hearing stories of how the pilot of the ferry was drunk at the time of the wreck.
I remember that day very well.

The pilot of the ferry was CLEARLY at fault. He was totally wasted on vodka. So was his crew. I hope the pilot's family doesn't sleep at night.

Finally after 33 years we have a memorial site in Destrehan to remember these wonderful men & women who lost their lives in this horrible accident.
It was too long overdue.
