Hi, being that I'm in ca. can I still grow some of the northern highbush type or is it not cold enough in my area? I'd like to get some jersey & bluejay varieties this spring.
Ha, you try and grow them in pots in Australia, and the soil will be concrete like by the end of the summer unless you keep it in the shade most of the day. The other seasons would probably be like your summer though. Nice vid, think I will acquire another variety to add to my collection of 1
I would really appreciate advise on when to plant them (I live by Atlanta, Georgia), and How to plant them (I live in a shaded/semi-sun only yard). I need a species that is fairly low maintenance too.
I had a blueberry bush in My backyard when I was growing up (also fig, spearmint, plum tree's, crab-apple and other goodies) I would LOVE to have one again. I'm just terrible at gardening, I'll admit.
How does watering effect pH over time? If you are constantly applying water with a pH of 7 or higher does that eventually raise the pH out of the desirable range? Thank you!
@swimbait1 Yes, water can affect your pH. If your water is 7 or higher, take a cup of vinegar and dilute it in a gallon of water and water your plant with it. Do this about every two weeks.
I have a bluberry plant here in Malaysia (it's from hundreds of seeds that I sowed). It's 1 1/2 years old plant. I don't know the variety. As I understood that most your blueberry is southern variety of blueberry. Do they need snow to start flowering?
@MrLizbudu Seedling blueberries in a marginal climate could take many years to begin flowering and setting fruit. Also, you never know what your fruit type or quality will be until they fruit. Good luck.
Awesome video on blue beries. I just bought my first one today and I am encouraged to see that you put them in containers as I will too. What fertilizer do you suggest.
What a lovely backyard. I would have never thought to keep blueberries in a container. Just as another viewer inquired, how do you keep the birds from getting into your crop? Or do you just share? It looks like you have tons of fruit, so perhaps it's a moot point.
@LadyKaliska Bird netting really works good with blueberries. I cover mine by just draping it to the ground and lifting it as needed to get under it. They make different shapes of the bird net and you can get the long narrow sheets for a row of plants or the smaller sheets for single plantings. Google Bird-x and see if you can get any more info.
@DaveWilsonTrees At $ 300 + it's especially cost prohibitive for the average, non-commercial home gardener when elsewhere they only spend $20 - 50 max for the moderate amount of netting they need.
Great info. I am also a fellow blueberry lover and just started growing them in containers. Question- can you put more than 1 plant in a large (19" diameter) pot? Please let me know. Thanks!
Hello, informative video. I live in the northeast(NJ) and want to have some container bluberries this spring. My question is what do I do with them in the winter? Should I store the plants in my garage? Or wrap them in clear plastic? Any info would help. Thanks
@blueyes816 I don't think that Northern Highbush Blueberries need to be protected from harsh winters. Maybe just because they're grown in containers. Just try to keep the root-ball from freezing solid.
@socalcraigster Bird netting really works good with blueberries. I cover mine by just draping it to the ground and lifting it as needed to get under it. Thanks for the reply Dave...you are the leader in nursery's, imo. Great videos. I'm zone 6a actually. I will leave them IN their pots and burry them and then mulch them on top...sound good?
hey can these grow in the Caribbean. I live in Barbados and its sunny all year. The temperature on average is usually around 28 degrees Celsius. Is that good ?
my oneal grew 3 feet the first year and was six feet tall by the 2nd year. i started with a 2 year old bare root. they do well in the ground if you mound it and add 50 % spaghum peat moss and mulch with pm/compost. in n. california i had the best results with sharpblues, duke misty, georgia gems, and cape fears, sunshine blues. good luck with bluejays, and new jersery, and reka. the worst luck with jubilee, and bluecrop. and even potted them up with lousy growing results. oneal is a giant.
I took my blueberries out of the ground in which I had them planted in...they were slowly dieing. I potted them with pure Canadian Sphagnum Peat moss. Starting to get their green back.
peat moss is acidic they should come around.
Is that ok....or should i mix 2 parts peat moss with 1 part sand or topsoil?
Pure peat moss is not to soggy is it?
I was told to use straight Peat moss by a local garden centre
I viewed this video last year and thought it was a great idea to grow in pots. I'm in Massachusetts and had severe die back and thought they were dead but they are now growing new leaves after pruning dead wood. Do you think its too cold for container blueberries here in MA? Do you have any suggestions for varieties for zone 6a? I have some in raised beds that are doing better. What soil mix do you use for the containers?

How can I protect them?
Can I dig a hole in my garden and burry (leaving them in the container) them in the ground just leaving the foliage exposed and mulch the roots?
Is this a good idea or should I bring them in my cellar which is around -2 degrees celcius all winter?

Blueberry seeds may well be the new GOLD.
You will find that they are also quite exspensive. Ebay you can find them for
$2.00 for 25 seeds + shipping. If you do this yourself, 1 pint of blueberries can yeild over 1,000 seeds.
DONT THROW AWAY THOSE BERRIES THAT ARE moldy, or past their etible point - SAVE THE SEEDS!
I have uploaded a great little video that shows you a fast/effective way to collect those
precious little tiny seeds!

pretty cool vid.
i just bought five different kinds of blueberries and i'm trying to learn how to have a nice big orchard/vineyard-kind of garden.
great hobby. and of course it couldn't hurt to learn how to be a little economically independent in our current economic saturation.
