I highly doubt this type of thing was common practice, the most misuse was by bulimics and fucked up women who like to poison themselves, or others, for attention.

I honestly can't think of a single "condition" that would require you to induce vomiting, so I have no idea what you're talking about.

actually it used to be used by EMT's in a poison control emergency or attempted suicide by overdosing on pills....but it's not used anymore, was replaced with drinking charcoal which actually soaks up the poison/pills rather tahn inducing vomiting. Ipecac is lame...lol
