USA Weightlifting is the worst in the world - the absolute bottom of the barrel. It is not uncommon to find top lifters from other countries who total more than USA lifters who are TWO weight classes heavier! The USA is as good in Olympic Weightlifting as Ethiopians are in ice hockey.
@brineal2 I was just being facetious with my Ethiopian comment. But seriously - the U.S. was very competitive in weightlifting in the 60's and prior to that. Since the 70's, we've been on a steady decline. U.S. lifters in the 60's probably had less support than lifters today. I heard Tommy Kono say that he often could not train all summer long because he had to work in the farm. Yet he still managed to break world records and win multiple Olympic medals. Why is this so?
@mrkitanai1 to say they are the bottom of the barrel is crass, there are literally hundreds of countries with lesser weightlifting teams...unfortunately weightlifting has never been a popular sport in the us which would explains much of the problem, how many children do you see weightlifting and training from a young age in the us? not many, whereas training begins at a very young age in other countries, also they search out individuals with anthropomorphic characteristics conducive to lifting
@haczabim Lots of reasons, not really much to do with the spine though. Mainly to practice specific segments of the lifts. For example, have the blocks high and train heavy jerks saves having to clean it off the ground for every jerk and lets you do more reps of heavy weight - it can be potentially dangerous lowering back to your shoulders. Coaches may want their athletes to train different sections that need work, target muscles in different pulls, almost endless possibilities.
Loved watching the women in this video! Inspiring.

could anybody tell me why many exercises begin off the blocks instead of from the floor? is that not to overstress the spine?
thanks.
