Beautiful! I so wish we could have this kind of entertainment nowadays. Pop music is so annoying and is destroying people's ears and sensitivity to what singing is all about.
@Surfacesofie The songs are on Youtube, sung by Mitch Miller and by The Four lads". You tube won't accept its own links. so you will need to do a Google search to get the links and type "Youtube "Tonight, tonight, put a light in your window" Note the correct spelling for "Tonight" and "light"
Above is an excerpt from Mitch Miller's show where his all male chorus sang, "Heart Of My Heart". Because of Mitch's strict religious orthodox upbringing, he did not allow any women in the group. At the time of this recording, all of the men's wives were preparing for Shabat.
Just heard where Mitch passed on last Saturday, having just turned 99 on July 4. RIP, Mitch. You may not have been the most perspicacious of record company execs (dissing Sinatra, passing on Elvis), but you did foster some solid artists (Bennett, Clooney, Mathis, Laine, Ray, Conniff), and you got even those with Van Gogh's ear for music (like my late father) to sing along with Mitch in droves.
Yes, what an era ... what music ... what happiness. Not many songs bring such sheer joy and love to ones soul as when Mitch Miller and Gang sing 'Heart of my Heart'.
When I was a junior and a member of the choir at Southwest High School in Minneapolis, MN. Mitch came in the spring and directed our choir. It was a real special time. Earlier that year we had put out a record that went national featuring "God's Christmas Tree" and the "Great Somebody." Both songs actually made it to the top 15 on the hit parade. Sid Lipmann had written the music for us. Very special choir and special times.
I loved that show as a very young boy. Mitch was a musical genius and the guiding hand at Columbia Records, where he directed the careers of such as Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Teresa Brewer, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Guy Mitchell, the Four Lads and many others.
@EMrono21 Good to know there are some people of your age that appreciate good music whatever your taste in music is. I cant even get my son ( 24) to listen to anything good. He listens to all the garbage and isnow complaining that he cant hear properly . I wonder why !!!!!!!!!!!
Our family always watched both Mitch Miller's show, and Lawrence Welk's show.
Lawrence Welk was pretty good, I guess, but I enjoyed Mitch Miller much more! Mitch and his gang had a really unique and pleasant sound. Thank you for posting this, and bringing back wonderful memories of a simpler and saner time.
I met Mitch Briefly in the mid-ninties..We were both dating members of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and we would both be waiting at the back stage door for the peformance to let so we could meet our dates..And I was born in 1961!
45 years ago I dated his daughter. They were a fabulous family from my point of view. He was always gracious. He must be in his 90s now. Thank you YouTube for this super momory!!
I hate to sound like an old man....but....the shows and even the commercials were so much more fun back then. Back then I remember 3 channels on TV (3 networks). All 3 seemed to have good shows. I now have about 200 cable channels.....and still only about 3 are worth watching.
What? 3 channels! How did you get 3? We only had 2 (2 and 7) !! Like Mark Knopfler sings in the Dire Straits song " 57 channels and nothn' on ( only now its 250 with Dish network and nothn' worth watchn'.
@HoboGus yeah, in the Boston suburbs back in the 50s early 60s we had 3 channels. Channel 4,5 & 7.....channel 2 was public television and was only on a few hours a day. Late at night I could actually get channel 10 and 12 from out of state but they came in pretty fuzzy and on ocasion came in ok. People that had those huge antennas on their roof did even better.....HEY.....thats something you don't see anymore TV antennas on the roofs of houses
@inkey2 And Mitch demanded audience participation with that bouncing ball. If you did not sing along, Miss Connie, Romper Room CEO, would not find you the next morning in her Magic Mirror.
Thanks. I really loved this show as a kid. For those who may not know Mitch was the guiding genius at Columbia Records in the 1950s, directing the success of among others Teresa Brewer, Patti Page, Tony Bennett, Guy Mitchell, Frankie Laine, the Four Lads and Rosemary Clooney.
oh my...this reminds me of my late father so much. I am 54 years old. When I was young dad and I would sit on the couch and watch Mitch MIller while he sipped his favorite beer and sang or hummed along to all the old songs. This was so long ago it seems like it was another life ago
I remember that shit-eating grin too. i`m 50 also and remember the bouncing ball? Always liked his Christmas songs. I think mitch is still alive and in his mid-90s now.
And there he is, just as I remember him, conducting with a shit-eating grin. I'm fifty years old, and "Sing Along With Mitch" may be one of my earliest memories of TV. I'd love to find a clip of the theme song.
oh my god O:
